Rapid construction delivery of COVID-19 special hospital: Case study on Wuhan Huoshenshan hospital

  • Infectious disease emergency hospitals are usually temporarily built during the pneumonia epidemic with higher requirements regarding diagnosis and treatment efficiency, hygiene and safety, and infection control.This study aims to identify how the Building Information Modeling (BIM) + Industrialized Building System (IBS) approach could rapidly deliver an infectious disease hospital and develop site epidemic spreading algorithms. Coronavirus-19 pneumonia construction site spreading algorithm model mind map and block diagram of the construction site epidemic spreading algorithm model were developed. BIM+IBS approach could maximize the repetition of reinforced components and reduce the number of particular components. Huoshenshan Hospital adopted IBS and BIM in the construction, which reduced the workload of on-site operations and avoided later rectification. BIM+IBS integrated information on building materials, building planning, building participants, and construction machinery, and realized construction visualization control and parametric design. The delivery of Huoshenshan Hospital was during the most critical period of the Coronavirus-19 pneumonia epidemic. The development of a construction site epidemic spreading algorithm provided theoretical and numerical support for prevention. The agent-based analysis on hospital evacuation observed "arched" congestion formed at the evacuation exit, indicating behavioral blindness caused by fear in emergencies.

  • Recently, the development of offshore wind farms based on past technical experiences from onshore wind turbine installations has become a worldwide issue. This study investigated the technical issues related to offshore wind farms and large-diameter monopiles from an economic perspective. In particular, the monopile foundation system (MFS), which is the most important part of the proposed fast construction system, is applied for the first time in Korea, and structural verification is essential because it supports large-diameter monopiles and is in charge of excavation. Therefore, in this study, a rapid construction system for large offshore wind power generators was introduced, and stability verification was performed through the structural analysis of the MFS.

  • Recently, development of substitution aggregate is urgently needed because aggregate shortage is continuing due to the exhaustion of natural aggregate and strict restrictions of environment in construction industry. Therefore, In this study, new processing method to solve the problems of processing method of existing converter slag, namely, rapid cooling slag produced by the rapid cooling and crushing process of the high temperature melten slag into the rotary drum and then using the cooling water, compressed air and steel ball was examined fundamental properties for utilize as fine aggregate for concrete. In addition, through this study, we propose the utilization method of rapid cooling slag as fine aggregate for concrete.

  • Recently, the frequency of damage to slopes for highways, railways, and complexes has been increasing according to abnormal climates such as heavy rainfall or snowfall. Rapid Hardening Composite Mat (RHCM) could be a satisfactory alternative because it has the advantages that large-scale earthwork is not essential and the period for restoration is minimized. Also, this method does not require heavy machines and a phase of maintenance for slopes against the shotcrete method or planted slope protection, which are representative slope protection methods. Furthermore, the curing time is shorter than Geosynthetic Concrete Composite Mat (GCCM). Therefore, RHCM could be useful for emergency restoration work. Thus, in this study, the strength and duration of RHCM are estimated, compared, and analyzed with GCCM. As a result of the laboratory test, the strength of RHCM is greater 51%, and the duration is larger 69% than GCCM.

Durability Performance of Concrete using Rice Husk Ash

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the durability performance of concrete that includes rice husk ash. Chloride diffusion coefficient obtained through a rapid chloride penetration test and depth of $CO_2$ penetration obtained through a rapid carbonation test were used to evaluate latent durability. Durability characteristics for rice husk ash replacement and age were determined. Through the experiment, it was found that when the replacement ratio of rice husk ash was increased from 0% to 10%, the compressive strength of concrete containing rice husk ash was similar to that of concrete containing silica fume. This shows that the durability performance of concrete containing rice husk is excellent compared to other concretes containing admixtures.

  • The aim of the research is evaluating a fundamental properties of mortar with atomized molten slag to develop a hardener for dry soil paving concrete. According to the analyzing results, comparing OPC, more favorable strength characteristics were obtained, while it showed rapid setting when the mixture contained more than 10 %. Therefore, when the atomized molten slag is used as a hardener, appropriate retarding process is needed.

  • In this study, various materials such as epoxy material, urethane material, cement material, and acrylic material are used to solve the water leakage occurring in underground structures. However, in the reality that the durability is insufficient and the effect is insufficient, it is aimed to improve the repairing effect by using cement and acrylics n combination. As a first study, we tried to verify the performance of rapid micro cement and cement paste and to improve the performance by checking the product properties. Three types of micro cement are evaluated. Three types of micro cement are used: fiber inclusion, fiber unfolding, and cement paste. When the material is selected for micro cement, it is applied to the field to understand the maintenance effect and durability.

Spalling Properties of Ring-Type Restrained Concrete by Heating Conditions (가열조건에 따른 링형 구속 콘크리트의 폭렬특성)

  • In this study, surface spalling and explosive spalling of ring-type ultra-high strength concrete under rapid heating and slow heating were investigated. In rapid heating, the internal temperature difference of the concrete is large, so that continuous surface spalling occurs. However, in slow heating, the difference in the internal temperature of the concrete is small, resulting in explosive spalling at a time. Since the heating condition has a great influence on the internal temperature of the concrete, it is necessary to consider the spalling of the concrete under various heating conditions.

Effect of rapid screening parameters on seismic performance of RC buildings

  • This study investigates the effects of soft story, short columns, heavy overhangs, pounding, and construction and workmanship quality parameters on seismic response of reinforced concrete buildings through nonlinear static and dynamic procedures. The accounted parameters are selected for their common use in rapid screening of RC buildings. The 4- and 7-story buildings designed according to pre-modern codes are used to reflect majority of the existing building stock. The relative penalty scores are employed in this study to evaluate relative importance of certain irregularities in the existing rapid seismic assessment procedures. Comparison of relative scores for the irregularities considered in this study show that the overall trend is similar. The relatively small differences may be accounted for regional construction practices. It is concluded that initial-phase seismic assessment procedures based on architectural features yield in somewhat similar results independent of their bases. However, the differences in the scores emphasize the proper selection of the method based on the regional structure characteristics.
