The IDRS provides detection, classification and bearing/range estimation by performing wavefront curvature analysis on an intercepted active transmission from target. Especially, a estimate of the target bearing/range that significantly affects the optimal operation of own submarine is required. Target bearing/range can be estimated by wavefront curvature ranging which use the difference of time arrival at sensors. But estimation ambiguity occur in bearing/range estimation due to a number of peaks caused by high center frequency and limited bandwidth of the intercepted active transmission and distortion caused by noise. As a result the bearing/range estimation performance is degraded. To estimate target bearing/range correctly, bearing/range estimation method that eliminate estimation ambiguity is required. In this paper, therefore, for wavefront curvature ranging, NLS cost function with curve fitting method is proposed, which provide robust bearing/range estimation performance by eliminating estimation ambiguity. Through simulation the performance of the proposed bearing/range estimation methods are verified.

In this paper, we study the estimation of angle, range and polarization parameters of a bistatic polarization sensitive frequency diverse array multiple-input multiple-output (PSFDA-MIMO) radar system. The application of polarization sensitive array in receiver is explored. A signal model of bistatic PSFDA-MIMO radar system is established. In order to utilize the multi-dimensional structure of array signals, the matched filtering radar data can be represented by a third-order tensor model. A joint estimation of the direction-of-departure (DOD), direction-of-arrival (DOA), range and polarization parameters based on parallel factor (PARAFAC) algorithm is proposed. The proposed algorithm does not need to search spectral peaks and singular value decomposition, and can obtain automatic pairing estimation. The method was compared with the existing methods, and the results show that the performance of the method is better. Therefore, the accuracy of the parameter estimation is further improved.

The correct estimation of the ionospheric delays is very important for the precise kinematic positioning especially in case of the long baseline. In case of triple frequency system, the ionospheric delays can be estimated from the measurements, but, in case of dual frequency system, the situation is not so simple. The precision of those supplied by the external information source such as IONEX is not sufficient. The high frequency component is neglected, and the precision of the low frequency component is not sufficient for the long baseline positioning. On the other hand, the high frequency component can be estimated from the phase range measurements. If the low frequency components are estimated by using the external information source or pseudo range measurements, a more reasonable estimation of the ionospheric delays may be possible. It has already been discussed by the author that the estimation of the low frequency components by using the external information source is not sufficient but fairly effective. The estimation using the pseudo range measurements is discussed in the present paper. The accuracy is not sufficient at present because of the errors in the pseudo range measurements. It is clarified that the bias errors in the pseudo range measurements are responsible for the poor accuracy of the ionospheric delays. However, if the accuracy of the pseudo range measurements is improved in future, the method would become very promising.

In this paper, we propose a near-field range estimation method for a uniform linear array that can calibrate bearing estimation error which give a bad influence on a range estimation process. When a range is fixed, the bearing error is calibrated to maximize the beamformer output by the proposed algorithm based on the gradient method. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can compensate the bearing error which is less than the mainlobe beamwidth so that reduce the range estimation error as similar as the case of no bearing error.

Frequency-modulated continuous wave(FMCW) radars with array antennas are widely used because of their light weight and relatively high resolution. A usual approach for the joint range and angle estimation of a target using an array FMCW radar is to create a range-angle matrix with the deramped received signal, and subsequently apply two-dimensional(2D) frequency estimation methods such as 2D fast Fourier transform on the range-angle matrix. However, such frequency estimation approaches cause bias errors since the frequencies in the range-angle matrix are not independent. Therefore, we propose a new maximum likelihood-based algorithm for joint range and angle estimation of targets using array FMCW radar, and demonstrate that the proposed algorithm achieves the Cram?r-Rao bounds, both for range as well as angle estimation.

A position estimation technique is presented for a missile using high-resolution range profiles obtained by three wideband radars. Radar measures a target range using a reflected signal from the surface of a missile. However, it is difficult to obtain the range between the radar and the origin of the missile. For this reason, the interior angle between the moving missile and tracking radar is calculated, and a compensated range between surface of the missile and its origin is added to the tracking range of the radar. Therefore, position estimation of a missile can be achieved by using three total ranges from each radar to the origin of the missile. To verify the position estimation of the missile, electromagnetic numerical analysis software was used to prove the compensated range according to the flight position. Moreover, a wideband radar operating at 500-MHz bandwidth was applied, and its range profile was used for the position estimation of a missile.
In shallow water, the array invariant, known as the effective range estimation method, is developed based on the broadband dispersion characteristics in an ideal waveguide, which can be summarized by the waveguide invariant. It is robust enough to estimate both the array tilt and range simultaneously, even in situations where array tilt exists. Recently, it has been extended to fully consider the angle dependence of the waveguide invariant. However, applying the array invariant in range-dependent environments instead of range-independent environments can lead to range estimation errors due to bathymetry mismatch. In this paper, we interpret such range estimation errors by introducing the concept of effective range. Through numerical simulations and experimental data in a weakly range-dependent environment, we demonstrate the relationship between range estimation errors and effective range.
The prompt gamma imaging (PGI) technique is considered as one of the most promising approaches to estimate the range of proton beam in the patient and unlock the full potential of proton therapy. In the PGI technique, a dedicated algorithm is required to estimate the range of the proton beam from the prompt gamma (PG) distribution acquired by a PGI system. In the present study, a new range estimation algorithm was developed for a multi-slit prompt-gamma camera, one of PGI systems, to estimate the range of proton beam with high accuracy. The performance of the developed algorithm was evaluated by Monte Carlo simulations for various beam/phantom combinations. Our results generally show that the developed algorithm is very robust, showing very high accuracy and precision for all the cases considered in the present study. The range estimation accuracy of the developed algorithm was 0.5-1.7 mm, which is approximately 1% of beam range, for 1×109 protons. Even for the typical number of protons for a spot (1×108), the range estimation accuracy of the developed algorithm was 2.1-4.6 mm and smaller than the range uncertainties and typical safety margin, while that of the existing algorithm was 2.5-9.6 mm.

In this paper, we propose target range estimation method using ghost target in the submarine linear array sonar. Usually, when submarine detect target, they use passive sonar detection to avoid self-disclosure by active sonar transmission. But, originally, passive linear array sonar have limitation for target range estimation and additional processing is required to get target range information. For the case of near-field target, typical range estimation method is using multiple information by multipath effect in underwater environment. Acoustic signal generated from target are propagated along with numerous multipath in underwater environment. Since multipath target signals received in the linear array sonar have different conic angles each other, ghost target is appeared at the bearing different with real target bearing and sonar operator can find these information on the operation console. Under several assumption, this geometric properties can be analysed mathematically and we get the target range by derivation of this geometric equations using measured conic angles of real target and ghost target.

This paper proposes the range and velocity of the object estimation method using a moving camera. Structure and motion (SaM) estimation is to estimate the Euclidean geometry of the object as well as the relative motion between the camera and object. Unlike the previous works, the proposed estimation method can relax the camera and object motion constraints. To this end, we arrange the dynamics of moving camera-moving object relative motion model in an appropriate form such that the nonlinear observer can be employed for the SaM estimation. Through both simulations and experiments we have confirmed the validity of the proposed estimation algorithm.
