  • A genetic variation within 29 strains of F. velutipes was analyzed by internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequence analysis and random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD). Seven hundred and twenty base pairs were sequenced during the analysis of the ITS region, but no significant variation was observed among the 29 strains of F. velutipes. Sixteen out of 40 random primers amplified polymorphic RAPD fragment patterns. The polymorphic levels of RAPD bands by some primers (OPA-2,4,3,9,10,20) were very high in all 29 strains, with 3,030 fragments ranging between 200 and 2,000 bp. Intraspecific genetic dissimilarity of the 29 strains was calculated to range from 3.3% to 45% by Nei-Li's method using these 3,030 RAPD bands. The genetic variation among Korean strains was relatively high, with dissimilarities ranging between 17% and 38.6%. In the Neighbor-Joining analysis using the genetic dissimilarities based on RAPD, all 29 strains were classified into 5 clusters. Strains in each cluster showed specific characteristics according to their origin and strains. These results suggested that OPA and OPB primers could be used for developing molecular genetic markers and screening of unidentified (F. velutipes) strains.

  • Since the different characteristics from the PRNG (Pseudo Random Number Generator) or various deterministic devices such as arithmetic processing units, new concepts and test methods should be suggested in order to test TRNG (Ture Random Number Generator). Deterministic devices can be covered by ATPG (Automatic Test Pattern Generation), which uses patterns generated by cyclic shift registers due to its hardware oriented characteristics, pure random numbers are not possibly tested by automatic test pattern generation due to its analog-oriented characteristics. In this paper, we studied and analyzed a hardware/software combined test method named Diehard test, in which we apply continuous pattern variation to check the statistics. We also point out the considerations when making random number tests.

  • It is challenging to detect foreground objects when background includes an illumination variation, shadow or structural variation due to its motion. Basically pixel-based background models including codebook-based modeling suffer from statistical randomness of each pixel. This paper proposes an algorithm that incorporates Markov random field model into pixel-based background modeling to achieve more accurate foreground detection. Under the assumptions the distance between the pixel on the input imaging and the corresponding background model and the difference between the scene estimates of the spatio-temporally neighboring pixels are exponentially distributed, a recursive approach for estimating the MRF regularizing parameters is proposed. The proposed method alternates between estimating the parameters with the intermediate foreground detection and estimating the foreground detection with the estimated parameters, after computing it with random initial parameters. Extensive experiment is conducted with several videos recorded both indoors and outdoors to compare the proposed method with the standard codebook-based algorithm.

  • A linkage map of Capsicum annuum L. was constructed by random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers followed in a backcross population of an intraspecific cross between cultivars HDA210 and Yatsufusa. A total of 420 random primers were tested and 311 polymorphic bands were generated by 158 random primers. Among them, 86 Yatsufusa specific bands generated by 52 primers were examined for mapping. Most bands except three segregated in Mendelian fashion fitting the expected 1:1 ratio. The total length of the map was 533 cM distributed in 15 linkage groups. The map distance between adjacent markers ranged 0 to 32.8 cM, with an average distance of 9.1 cM (63 markers). Some markers were clustered and this may be due to the amplification of a repetitive sequence by the RAPDs. Primer pairs for a sequence characterized amplified region (SCAR) were developed and the segregation scores by the SCAR primers were in accordance with the RAPD data. Two QTL markers for number of axillary shoots and for early flowering were developed. One QTL for early flowering located in the linkage group 3 and explained 61 "io of the phenotypic variation. The other QTL for the number of axillary shoots located in the linkage group 4 explained 55 % of the phenotypic variation.tion.

  • The genetic variation of random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) patterns of genomic DNAs was investigated in dioecious plant Rumex acetosa L., which carries different sex chromosome complements in female (2n=12A+XX) and male (2n=12A+XY$_1$Y$_2$). One hundred and twenty random primers consisted of 10-mer were used for PCR amplification. Polymorphic bands were found in 24 primers. Specific bands for female and male were 16 and 18, respectively. Especially, a band of 1,440 bp from the OPC-10 primer was male specific. These sex specific RAPD markers are used to understanding the sex determination mechanism in plants.

  • Some engineering materials are often known to have considerable spatial variation in their resisting strength and other properties. The objective of this study is to investigate the averaging effect and the applicability of extremal statistic for the statistical size effect. In the present study, it is assumed that the material property is a stationary random process in space. The theoretical autocorrelation function of the material strength are discussed for several correlation lengths. And, in order to investigate the statistical size effect, the material properties was simulated by using the non-Gaussian random process method. The material properties were plotted on the Weibull probability papers. The main results are summarized as follows: The autocorrelation function of the material properties are almost independent of the averaging length. The variance decreases with increasing the averaging length. As correlation length is smaller, the slope is larger. And also, it was found that Weibull statistics based on the weakest-link model could not explain the spatial variation of material properties with respect to the size effect satisfactory.

  • In our previous articles, an approach has been proposed for the evaluation of the uncertainty of overall result from multiple measurements. In the approach, uncertainty sources were classified into two groups: the first including those giving same 'systematic' effect on each individual measurement and the second including the others giving 'random' effect on each individual measurement and causing a variation among individual measurement results. The arithmetic mean of the replicated measurements is usually assigned as the value for the overall result. Uncertainty of the overall result is determined by separately evaluating and combining an overall uncertainty from sources of the 'systematic' effect and another overall uncertainty from sources of the 'random' effect. This conceptual approach has been widely adopted in chemical metrology society. In this study, further logical proof with more detailed mathematical expressions is provided on the approach.

  • In this paper a method is suggested for the probabilistic analysis of impact buckling failure time of cylinder with random axisymmetric geometric imperfection under axial impact. Failure is assumed as axisymmetric radial deformation exceeds the given criteria for the first time. For the generation of random geometric initial imperfection, random field theory by mean function and autocorrelation function of geometric imperfection is used. Suggested method is useful for the treatment of the randomness of realistic geometric imperfection and can be used for the structural safety analysis of cylinder considering its effect.

  • This study proposes an improved 3-D model that includes a new non-reflected wave generation system for oblique incident and multi-directional random waves, which enables us to estimate the effect of the various wave-types on 3-D wave fields in a coastal area with permeable submerged breakwaters. Then, using the numerical results, the three-dimensional wave field characteristics around permeable submerged breakwaters are examined in cases of oblique incident and multi-directional random waves. Especially, the wave height, mean surface elevation and mean flow around the submerged breakwaters are discussed in relation to the variation of incident wave condition.

  • To analyze longitudinal count data, Poisson linear mixed models are commonly used. In the models the random effects covariance matrix explains both within-subject variation and serial correlation of repeated count outcomes. When the random effects covariance matrix is assumed to be misspecified, the estimates of covariates effects can be biased. Therefore, we propose reasonable and flexible structures of the covariance matrix using autoregressive and moving average Cholesky decomposition (ARMACD). The ARMACD factors the covariance matrix into generalized autoregressive parameters (GARPs), generalized moving average parameters (GMAPs) and innovation variances (IVs). Positive IVs guarantee the positive-definiteness of the covariance matrix. In this paper, we use the ARMACD to model the random effects covariance matrix in Poisson loglinear mixed models. We analyze epileptic seizure data using our proposed model.
