  • The safety evaluations of railway wheel sets make use of the static fracture toughness obtained in ingot materials. The static fracture toughness of wheelset materials has been extensively studied by experiments, but the dynamic fracture toughness with respect to wheel set materials has not been studied enough yet. It is necessary to evaluate the characteristics of the fracture mechanics depending on each location for a full-scale wheel set for high-speed trains, because the load state for each location of the wheel set while running is different the contact load between the wheel and rail, cyclic stress in the wheel plate, etc. This paper deals with the fracture toughness depend on load rates. The fracture toughness depending on load rate data shows that once the downward curve from quasi-static values was reached, subsequent values showed a slow increase with respect to the impact velocity. This means that dynamic fracture toughness should be considered in the design code of the wheelset material.

  • The railway vehicle is composed of many suspension components, such as 1st springs, 2nd dampers, that have an influence on the dynamic characteristics of high speed train. Also, the wheel/rail shapes and its contact mechanism affect the dynamic behavior of high speed train. but these geometric contact characteristics are nonlinear functions of the wheelset lateral displacement and it do not exact dynamic analysis for high speed train. there is a need to develop a new wheel/rail contact module for dynamic behavior and wheelset model is divided motor box, wheel box and wheel body. This wheel is moved by motor box and constrained by joint. It is almost same a train and its result is more exactly.

  • The important factor to evaluate the running safety of a railway vehicle would be the interaction force between wheel and rail(derailment coefficient), for which is one of important factors to check the running safety of a railway vehicle that may cause a tragic accident. In this paper, when interaction force between wheel and rail happens to wheel-set of tilting vehicles, it analyzes stress distribution and verified safety.

  • The geometric parameters between wheel and rail change wheel/rail contact geometry characteristics, and this influence dynamic behavior of rolling stock. So, the selections of optimum geometric parameters between wheel and rail is important for planning of railway system. In this study, we have analyzed the influence of geometric parameters like wheel flange-back distance, gage, and rail inclination to the equivalent conicity relating dynamic behavior. The analyses show the following results. The widening of wheel flange-back distance increase the equivalent conicity, the widening of gage, rail inclination 1/20 compared with rail inclination 1/40 decrease the equivalent conicity.

  • Fatigue damage on the train wheel surface was estimated by considering the effect of friction coefficient of rolling on the contact surface between the wheel and rail during operation. From FEM analys, the maximum Tresca stress was 550.7 MPa at a depth of 2.07 mm under the maximum contact pressure ($P_{max}$ = 894.3 MPa) between wheel and rail. The maximum stress continued to increase along with the increase in the frictional coefficient. The fatigue initiation lifetime of the wheel by the rolling contact was predicted using the Smith-Watson-Topper (SWT) equation and the maximum principal strain equation (${\varepsilon}$-N).

  • An accurate measurement of the train-track interaction forces is important for track performance evaluation. In the field calibration test as a wheel load measurement process, the calibration system creates a different boundary condition in comparison with that in the train wheel passage. This study aims to evaluate a reliability of the field calibration test in the process of wheel load measurement. Finite element models were developed to compare the deformed shapes, bending moment and shear force profiles on the rail section. The analysis results revealed that the deformed shapes and their associated bending moment profiles on the rail are significantly different in two numerical simulations of the calibration test and the train wheel load passage. However, the shear stress profile on the rail section of the strain gauge installation in the field was almost identical, which may imply that the current calibration test is sufficiently reliable.

  • Various programs for dynamic simulation of the railway vehicle have advantages and disadvantages. These programs have limitation that cannot express a large deformable body for an wire of the railway vehicle. In this study, a program for dynamic simulation of the railway vehicle is developed. And the rigid, flexible and large deformable body can be simulated using this program. Its reliability is verified by comparison with a commercial program. Also, a wire is considered as the large deformable body and a sliding joint which connects the rigid body to the large deformable body is included. Moreover, as the wheel-rail contact module is added, the dynamic simulation of the railway vehicle can be analyzed using the developed program.

  • Wheel reprofiling is frequently conducted to remove faults such as flange wear, flat areas, and cracks that occur in railway vehicle operation. We analyzed the dynamic performances of a vehicle before and after wheel reprofiling to grasp the influence of reprofiling on the dynamic behavior of the vehicle. We measured the wheel profile of the test vehicle and conducted a running test to analyze the vibration and comfort characteristics of the test vehicle. The result of the test indicated that vibration of the test vehicle after wheel reprofiling was reduced compared to that before wheel reprofiling. And, comfort level of the test vehicle after wheel reprofiling was improved by about 3dB laterally and vertically. Consequently, the positive effect of wheel reprofiling on the dynamic performance of vehicle was verified.

  • The wear problem of wheel flange occurs at sharp curves of rail. This paper proposes a procedure for optimum design of a wheel profile wherein flange wear is reduced by improving an interaction between wheel and rail. Application of optimization method to design problem mainly depends on characteristics of design space. This paper compared local optimization method with global optimization according to sensitivity value of objective function for design variables to find out which optimization method is appropriable to minimize wear of wheel flange. Wheel profile is created by a piecewise cubic Hermite interpolating polynomial and dynamic performances are analyzed by a railway dynamic analysis program, VAMPIRE. From the optimization results, it is verified that the global optimization method such as genetic algorithm is more suitable to wheel profile optimization than the local optimization of SQP (Sequential Quadratic Programming) in case of considering the lack of empirical knowledge for initial design value.
