Evaluating the Performance of Freight Railway Stations Using Data Envelopment Analysis (자료포락분석을 활용한 철도화물취급역의 성과평가)

  • In this paper we presents an approach to evaluating the performance of freight railway stations based on several performance indicators as an alternative to the evaluation based on single indicator. Such evaluation needs a way to weight the importance of the individual performance indicator. Data envelopment analysis (DEA) suggested by Charnes, Cooper, and Rhodes (1978) can be used to determine the weights. Using DEA we evaluate 353 freight railway stations based on four performance indicators: loading volume, unloading volume, loading revenue, unloading revenue. The evaluation results facilitates the organization's decision making by providing valuable information.

  • This study aims to quantify the railway freight performance using various indicators, to compare it over many countries, and to evaluate efficiency of railway freight in Korea. The indicators developed in this study was classified into two categories; country-specific and company-specific indicator. The former includes freight train density, average gross train load and average haul while the latter contains revenue/ton-km, ratio of operating costs to revenue, revenue per employee, ton-km per employee, costs per ton-km and ratio of labor costs to total operating costs. The results of this study shows that Korail performance is in low efficiency due to multi-frequency small amounts transport. The productivity of railway freight in Korea represented as ton-km per employee appears to be lower than that of other oversea companies considered in this study.

  • In this paper we presents an approach to assessing the efficiency of freight railroad stations reflecting freight item importance weights with multiple performance indicators and multiple operational condition indicators. We evaluate 187 freight railroad stations using data envelopment analysis with assurance region. Each freight item's loading/unloading volume is used as a performance indicator. Freight labor and yard capacity are used as operational condition indicators. Freight item importance weights are reflected to the data envelopment analysis as assurance region. The evaluation results facilitates the organization's decision making by providing valuable information.

  • Currently, logistics are in small quantities and in diverse forms, and the amounts are continuously increasing. Railway logistics however are losing their market share every year mainly due to low operation speed and loading time, which means the trucks are covering the most of the freights. In order to solve these situations, this paper proposed the high speed freight train as working multi-modality with other modes to make effective transshipment. The high speed freight train has maximum operation speed of 300km/h and electric power to run centralized power supply. There are large dual door system, bogie system covering fluctuating load of 15[ton], automatic loading device, ULD(unit load device) bed and ULD locking system in this freight rolling stock. We calculated the performance of powering and braking capacity for this train and proposed how many vehicles are composed of train set. The results in this paper can help to make a decision to define the technical specification of High-speed freight train for the efficiency of rail freight service.

  • In order to transport cargo rapidly and safely from the trans-Korean railway to the trans-Siberian railway having a different gauge, a gauge-changeable freight wagon can be used. Because the wagon is expected to run in South Korea, North Korea and Russia, it should have good dynamic performance in these railways. In this paper, the dynamic characteristics of a gauge-changeable freight wagon was analyzed numerically using ADAMS/Rail in each condition of the railways having different gauges and rail profiles. The wagon makes use of load sensitive friction damping and has highly nonlinear behaviour, which is modeled in detail as the full nonlinear dynamic model. It is shown that the running behaviour of the wagon is sensitive to changes in the rail gauge and profiles, however the assessment quantities from the point of view of safety, track fatigue and running behaviour are less than the limit valves.

  • Rail car axles are very important parts for safety of passengers and structural integrity of vehicles. The axles are supported by bearings. To seal grease lubricating the bearings of freight cars, an oil seal has been developed. The developed oil seal is composed of an inner plate, an outer plate and a seal rubber. The friction between axle and housing with the developed oil seal is very low. The seals are designed for a minimum life expectancy of 800,000 kilometers service. In this study, an accelerated durability tests according to AAR Specification M-934-82 were carried out. In addition, various performance tests according to KS B 2804 were conducted.

  • The DMT freight is judged that economic performance is good because can increase cargoes than existing freight. However, the existing freight cars, each with a different balance to the body structure is bogie because the vibrations may occur. Thus, by minimizing vibration over the existing freight securing the safety of the driving if you will not have major problems in cargoes. In this study, multi-body dynamic analysis tool, VI-Rail using the actually Gyeongbu Railroad line and an empty, full freight condition include curve radius, track irregularity, The DMT freight of the derailed wagons were assessed for safety analysis. Full and empty freight conditions for parity in the Gyeongbu Railroad line(Dongdaegoo${\leftrightarrow}$Kyungsan) derailment safety analysis, such as derailment coefficient and the wheel unloaded, echoing the curve and the orbit is affected by the irregularity was found. Full freight condition than the empty conditions showed a significant derailment safety. Overall, the limits of derailment coefficient(Q/P = 0.8) and wheel unload decrement limits(${\triangle}P/P$ = 0.6) is less safe with me confirmed that the derailment safety.

  • In this paper the dynamic characteristics of a Swing Motion Bogie, such as a critical speed and a carbody vibration, are investigated in reply to the request of the Meridian Rail Corporation in the United States. Also described are experimental results of the maximum speed, the derailment coefficient, the lateral force, the vertical force, the vibration acceleration and steady state lateral acceleration measured from main line tests.
