  • The design procedure as well as some test results of a low-cost commercial radome for mobile DBS(Direct Broadcasting Satellite) receiving antenna system are presented in this paper. At first the complex permittivity of dielectric material should be measured in order to select a material for radome design. The complex permittivities of low-cost plastics supplied by domestic vendors are measured and presented. And then the transmission losses of the sheets are calculated. The calculated results are verified by the measurements of wave transmission test of that sheets. Two kinds of radomes, ABS single-layer and A-Sandwich((PET-Foam-ABS), are fabricated and measured practically. The transmission losses of single-layer and A-sandwich radome are 1.5dB and 0.6dB respectively at the maximum wave incident angle of 57 degree. Also the calculated crosspolarization caused by A-sandwich radome is under 20dB.

  • In this study, the insertion loss and phase delay according to the multi-layer structure radome parameters were analyzed using the boundary value solution approach, and the multi-layer structure and hexa mesh structures with low-loss electrical characteristics for the Ku-band transmission/reception frequency of 10.7 ~ 14.5 GHz were designed and manufactured. A hexa mesh was applied to minimize radio wave transmission and scattering, which lowered the transmittance refractive index according to the radio incident angle and minimized dielectric loss through high-density foam. Similar to the simulation result, the transmission loss obtained the gain in a specific receiving frequency band, and in the transmission frequency band, an excellent low loss characteristic was obtained with an insertion loss of 0.8dB or less. The results of this study can be used in radio transmission radomes of low-weight, low-cost end-system protection devices.

  • In this paper, we developed a broadband multi-layered radome applicable for high-power applications. In this regard, we presented the wave propagation characteristics of the broadband multi-layered radome with the ABCD matrix and obtained the optimal thickness and the material constant for each layer by an optimization algorithm called "particle swarm optimization," implemented by a commercial numerical modeling tool. Further, we redesigned it in view of mechanical properties to reflect environmental conditions such as wind, snow, and ice. The power transmission property was reanalyzed based on the recalculated data of each layer's thickness to consider the limitations of the fabrication of a large structure. Under the condition of a peak electric field strength that is 10 dB above the critical electric field strength in air breakdown, we analyzed the air breakdown by radio frequency(RF) in the designed radome using the commercial full-wave electromagnetic tool. The radome was manufactured and tested by continuous wave(CW) RF small signal and large signal in an anechoic chamber. The test results showed good agreement with those attained by simulation.

  • To evaluate the structural integrity of the helicopter radome, we performed bird strike analysis using SPH (Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics) technique. Since the SPH method is a meshfree method, there is no phenomenon such as mesh tangling and it is suitable to predict the dispersion behavior of debris and debris cloud generated by high-speed impact. In order to observe the scattering direction of fractured bolts, the analysis were performed under the condition that the fracture occurs at the proof load. As a result of bird strike analysis, there is no secondary damage as well as the damage due to, the dispersion behavior of the bird model, and the scattering of the fractured bolts and radome. From the additional analysis that were performed to determine the actual bolt fracture, only plastic deformation is predicted since the maximum stress of the bolt does not exceed the ultimate stress.

  • A satellite communication (Satcom) antenna mounted on a moving platform provides a controlled heading that enables a geosynchronous satellite to communicate with the ground. A monopulse tracking method is effective for antenna control on a vehicle when it vibrates severely. However, this method has unexpected obstacles and its control performance is insufficient. To improve its control performance, the control command and monopulse error, the signal delay, and the radome effect are evaluated through tests. The authors then propose a method to transform the antenna error from 3D coordinates to 2D antenna coordinates. As a result, the antenna control performance is improved. As indicated in this study, examining antenna systems using the monopulse method on moving platforms is possible by understanding the antenna test process.

  • In this paper, we present the AFP(antenna front plate)s which were designed to reduce the reflection for the sake of the improvement of DF(direction finding) accuracy. The AFP consists of front plate, absorber and radome. The AFPs were optimized respectively by real test and we performed the DF test using our AFPs in laboratory. The DF test shows that the DF accuracy is about 2 times better than the requirement capability. Then, the DF field test was executed using the AFPs, which were installed in helicopter in consideration of the reflection by platform. The result of the DF field test is superior to the requirement capability also, which shows the validity of our design method.

  • In the case of the microstrip antenna with the coaxial probe-feeding, there is rapidly-varying patch current near the point where the probe feed is connected to the patch. We represent this current distribution using the attachment mode that insures continuity of currents from the feed to the patch. In this paper, we can accurately analyze the effect of a cover layer or radome for an antenna with the attachment which model rigorous probe feed.

  • In this paper, a semi-infinite array analysis method is proposed to analyze the defects that may occur during the fabrication of the frequency selective radome. In the analysis of N×N finite array structure using 3D analysis software, much analysis time and memory are required, whereas the semi-infinite array structure analysis proposed in this paper can predict relatively accurate electromagnetic performance while reducing the analysis time. In comparison with the results of the periodic simulation, the simulation of the semi-infinite array structure confirmed the error within ±3%. To verify the results of the simulation, the results were compared with the measured results, and the same tendency at the point of performance change and similar performance degradation at the band of interest were investigated. Using the proposed semi infinite array structure analysis, it is confirmed that the analysis of defects in the electromagnetic periodic structure is possible.

  • This research investigated the hygrothermal effect on the strength of bolt jointed section and moisture contents of composites exposed to hygrothermal environment for composite aircraft radome. The decrease in strength in the test environment is mainly attributed to the change in the material properties of the matrix due to temperature and moisture. The composite specimens were tested in three different environmental conditions: RTD(room temperature and dry), CTD(cold temperature and dry) and ETW(elevated temperature and wet). The failure mode of the bolt jointed composite specimens were studied using tests and finite element analysis. Finite element analysis reasonably predicted the failure load and mode of the joints. A reliability-based design was carried out for the bolt jointed composites of radome.
