  • The GFSK Transceiver of 400 MHz ISM band for data communication is designed and fabricated. To reduce the occupied bandwidth of transmitted signal, the GFSK modulation is selected. The measured results of fabricated transceiver show the data rate of 2,400 bps at 8.5 kHz bandwidth, frequency deviation of less than ${\pm}3\;kHz$, sensitivity of -107 dBm at SINAD of 20 dB, BER of less than $1.8{\times}10^{-3}$ at -110 dBm input power. The fabricated transceiver is satisfied with the regulation of radio wave and has the good performance.

  • Radio frequency (RF) microwave can be used to predict glucose concentration in a sample. This paper presents preliminary results in determining the concentration by measuring relative permittivity in the solutions of distilled water, saline, human serum, and human blood containing glucose. It was shown that the microwave method has larger penetration depth of about 100times of NIR, than NIR technique in measuring glucose concentration for the tissue like a human muscle. The larger penetration depth of the method has advantages because it is more useful to detect glucose in a human body non-invasively. In the experiments, sensitivity for detecting glucose concentration in blood solutions was almost 57mg/dl at the frequency of approximately 5.8GHz.

  • This study examined the possibility of using striped field mice as a biological dosimeter or indicator for the environmental radio-surveillance. For this study, the external morphological characteristics and isoenzymic types of dark-striped field mice were studied after they were captured. Among the morphological external characteristics, the dark-brown coat, dark back stripe, head-to-tail length, tail length, and ear length matched the taxonomical characteristics of dark-striped field mice. The analyses on L-lactate dehydrogenase, aspartate aminotransferase, and malate dehydrogenese revealed that one species of dark-striped field mice, called Apodemus agrarius, was inhabitated throughout a wide range of Korea. On the other hand, A. agrarius and ICR mice to analyze their survival rate and frequency of micronuclei in peripheral polychromatic erythrocytes after irradiation (0, 0.5, 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 Gy). The $LD_{50/30}$ of A. agrarius and ICR mice were approximately 5 Gy and 7Gy, respectively. The results of the study reveal that wild A. agrarius have a high potential as a biological monitoring system to determine the impact of radiation effect in areas such as those within the vicinity of nuclear power plants.

  • In wireless sensor networks (WSNs) duty cycling has been an imperative choice to reduce idle listening but it introduces sleep delay. Thus, the conventional WSN medium access control protocols are bound by the energy-latency tradeoff. To break through the tradeoff, we propose a radio wave sensor called radio frequency (RF) wakeup sensor that is dedicated to sense the presence of a RF signal. The distinctive feature of our design is that the RF wakeup sensor can provide the same sensitivity but with two orders of magnitude less energy than the underlying RF module. With RF wakeup sensor a sensor node no longer requires duty cycling. Instead, it can maintain a sleep state until its RF wakeup sensor detects a communication signal. According to our analysis, the response time of the RF wakeup sensor is much shorter than the minimum transmission time of a typical communication module. Therefore, we apply duty cycling to the RF wakeup sensor to further reduce the energy consumption without performance degradation. We evaluate the circuital characteristics of our RF wakeup sensor design by using Advanced Design System 2009 simulator. The results show that RF wakeup sensor allows a sensor node to completely turn off their communication module by performing the around-the-clock carrier sensing while it consumes only 0.07% energy of an idle communication module.

  • A L-Band microwave radiometer for remote sensing of sea and river surface salinity has been developed. The processes of the design and implementation of the microwave radiometer, and the experiment results are presented in this paper. The developed L-Band microwave radiometer was field-tested in Sum-Jin River. The initial results shows that the microwave radiometer measures the sea and river surface salinity with the sensitivity of 1.5psu successfully.

  • Complex permittivities of material in a wide bandwidth are measured by using an open-ended coaxial probe. To obtain a confident complex permittivity profile, the accuracy of measured reflection coefficients and the stability of the conversion model should be guaranteed in advance. In this paper, the sensitivity of our conversion model is analyzed by employing two instruments with different uncertainties. And various factors effected on the accuracy of measured reflection coefficients are investigated in experiment.

  • A fully integrated inductorless CMOS impulse radio ultra-wideband (IR-UWB) receiver is implemented using $0.18\;{\mu}m$ CMOS technology for 3-5 GHz application. The UWB receiver adopts the non-coherent architecture, which removes the complexity of RF architecture and reduces power consumption. The receiver consists of inductorless differential three stage LNA, envelope detector, variable gain amplifier (VGA), and comparator. The measured sensitivity is -70 dBm in the condition of 5 Mbps and BER of $10^{-3}$. The receiver chip size is only $1.8\;mm\;{\times}\;0.9\;mm$. The consumed current is 15 mA with 1.8 V supply.

  • Superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) is a sensitive detector of magnetic flux signals. Up to now, the main application of SQUIDs has been measurements of magnetic flux signals in the frequency range from near DC to several MHz. Recently, cryogenic low-noise radio-frequency (RF) amplifiers based on DC SQUID are under development aiming to detect RF signals with sensitivity approaching quantum limit. In this paper, we review the recent progress of cryogenic low-noise RF amplifiers based on SQUID technology.

  • Radio-sensitivity of pathogens in commercial marinated beef ribs, Galbi, and effect of irradiation on microbiological safety and sensory properties of marinated beef rib were investigated. Commercial raw marinated beef ribs were highly contaminated by pathogenic microorganisms including Bacillus cereus, Salmonella typhimurium, Escherichia coli, and Staphylococcus aureus, ranged from $10^{3}\;to\;10^{4}\;CFU/g$. Gamma irradiation reduced pathogen count during storage. No viable cells of pathogens were observed in sample irradiated at 7.5 kGy except for Bacillus cereus. Radio-sensitivity of inoculated pathogens in marinated beef ribs and commercial one showed $D_{10}$ value of 0.54-0.60 and 2.15-2.98, respectively, In sensory evaluation irradiated sample showed highest color and overall acceptance among treatments (p<0.05). Results indicate low dose (2.5-5.0 kGy) irradiation is effective for ensuring safety of marinated beef ribs without decreasing sensory quality.
