  • A set of Zernike moments has been successfully used for object recognition or content-based image retrieval systems. Real time applications using Zernike moments, however, have been limited due to its complicated definition. Conventional methods to compute Zernike moments fast have focused mainly on the radial components of the moments. In this paper, utilizing symmetric/anti-symmetric properties of Zernike basis functions, we propose a fast and efficient method for Zernike moments. By reducing the number of operations to one quarter of the conventional methods in the proposed method, the computation time to generate Zernike basis functions was reduced to about 20% compared with conventional methods. In addition, the amount of memory required for efficient computation of the moments is also reduced to a quarter. We also showed that the algorithm can be extended to compute the similar classes of rotational moments, such as pseudo-Zernike moments, and ART descriptors in same manner.

  • A new ionized sputtering process was developed to fill small trench or via using additional ionizing mechanism of sputtered particles from 32cm $AlCu_x$(x=0.5%) cathode target with rotating magnet, then drawn toward substrate by small negative DC potential. The radial uniformity in RFI magnetron sputtering was studied by plasma diagnosis and appropriate RFI coil design to improve it. Optical emission intensities of excited species. $Ar^{\circ}, \;Ar^+;Al^+, \;Al^{\circ}$ are measured across the radial direction and showed close correlation with deposit's bottom to top thickness ratios in trenches and vias of submicron opening and 1.5 aspect ratio. After increase of the diameter of RF coil from 29 cm to 32 cm and improved the power leading feedthrough symmetry by removal of asymmetric single turn region, there was an increase of uniformity from 7.5% to 1.5% in bottom to top thickness ratio in 0.6 $\mu\textrm{m}$ vias.

  • Anisotropic elastic constants of Zr-2.5Nb pressure tube materials were determined by a high temperature resonant ultrasound spectroscopy (RUS). The resonant frequencies were measured using alumina wave-guides and wide band ultrasonic transducers in a small furnace. The rectangular parallelepiped specimens were fabricated along with the axial, radial and circumferential direction of the pressure tube. A nine elastic stiffness tensor for orthotropic symmetry was determined in the range of room temperature ${\sim}500^{\circ}C$. As the temperature increases, the elastic constant tensor, cij gradually decreases. Higher elastic constants along the transverse direction compared to those along the axial or radial direction are similar to the case of Young's modulus or shear modulus. A crossing of shear elastic constants along axial direction and radial direction was observed near $150^{\circ}C$. This fact corresponds to the crossing of c44 and c66 of single crystal zirconium.

  • PMN-PT, a piezoelectric single crystal, has many useful applications such as sensors and actuators. In this paper, all the elastic, piezoelectric, and dielectric constants of the PMN-32%PT single crystals were measured by the resonance method. For the rhombohedral symmetry, a total of twelve independent material constants were measured such as six elastic compliance constants at constant electric field, two dielectric constants at constant stress, and four piezoelectric constants d. Seven sets of crystal samples of each different geometry were prepared for the measurement of length-thickness extensional, thickness extensional, radial, length extensional and thickness shear modes of vibration, respectively. In order to check the validity of the measurement, experimental impedance spectrum of the PMN-PT crystal was compared with numerical data spectrum calculated with the measured material constants. The good agreement between the two spectra confirmed validity of the results in this paper.

  • We estimate the enclosed mass profile in the central 10 pc of the Milky Way by analyzing the infrared photometry and the velocity observations of dynamically relaxed stellar population in the Galactic center. HST/NICMOS and Gemini Adaptive Optics images in the archive are used to obtain the number density profile, and proper motion and radial velocity data were compiled from the literature to find the velocity dispersion profile assuming a spherical symmetry and velocity isotropy. From these data, we calculate the the enclosed mass and density profiles in the central 10 pc of the Galaxy using the Jeans equation. Our improved estimates can better describe the exact evolution of the molecular clouds and star clusters falling down to the Galactic center, and constrain the star formation history of the inner part of the Galaxy.

  • It would be interesting to know if energy minimizing harmonic maps between manifolds have symmetric properties when the manifolds under consideration have some. In this paper, we consider among others radial symmetry. A radially symmetric manifold M of dimension m is the one with a point, called a pole, and an O(m) action as an isometric rotation with respect to the pole, or more precisely a radially symmetric manifold M has a coordinate on which the metric is of the form $ds_{M}$$^2$ = d$r^2$ + m(r)$^2$d$\theta^2$ for some function m(r) depending only on r. Of course m(0) = 0, m'(0) = 1, and when m(r) = r, (M, $ds_{ M}$/$^2$) is the Euclidean space $R^2$.(omitted)

  • In this paper, we consider the following nonlocal fractional Laplacian equation with a singular nonlinearity (-∆)su(x) = λuβ (x) + a0u (x), x ∈ ℝn, where 0 < s < 1, γ > 0, $1<{\beta}{\leq}\frac{n+2s}{n-2s}$, λ > 0 are constants and a0 ≥ 0. We use a direct method of moving planes which introduced by Chen-Li-Li to prove that positive solutions u(x) must be radially symmetric and monotone increasing about some point in ℝn.

  • The structural variation process of amorphous SiO$_2$ gel upon heat-treatment conditions of 80, 250, 450 and 1000$^{\circ}C$ has been studied by using the radial distribution functions (RDF$_{obs}$) estimated from the X-ray diffraction intensities. The expected gel structure was determined by comparing the RDF$_{obs}$ with those for the other six standard samples selected appropriately. The structure of specimens prepared by sol-gel method is well consistent with that of fused SiO$_2$ (${\beta}$-cristobalite with cubic symmetry) except a slight difference in O-O band distance.

  • We have theoretically studied the nonadiabatic transitions among the five lower states with the Ω=$1_u$ symmetry ($1_u^{(1)} to 1_u^{(5)}$) in the photodissociation of Cl₂, Br₂, and I₂by using the spin-orbit configuration interaction (SOCI) method and the semiclassical time-dependent coupled Schrodinger equations. From the configuration analyses of the SOCI wavefunctions, we found that the nonadiabatic transition between $1_u^{(2)}$ and $1_u^{(1)}$ is a noncrossing type, while that between $1_u^{(3)}$ and $1_u^{(4)}$ is a crossing type for all the molecules. The behavior of the radial derivative coupling element between $1_u^{(1)}$ and $1_u^{(2)}$ and that between $1_u^{(3)}$ and $1_u^{(4)}$ is analyzed in detail. In Cl₂, nonadiabatic transitions can take place even between the states correlating to different dissociation limits, while in Br₂ and I₂, with the usual photon energies e.g. less than 20 eV, nonadiabatic transitions occur only between the states correlating to the same dissociation limits, reflecting the different magnitudes of the spin-orbit interactions.
