Performance Improvement of Active Queue Management for Internet Routers

  • In this paper, we propose a control scheme for improving the performance of a conventional Proportional-Integral (PI) controller for Active Queue Management (AQM) supporting TCP flows. When the PI controller is used for AQM, the windup phenomenon of the integral action causes the performance degradation. Therefore we model AQM as a system with a saturator and apply anti-windup methods to the PI controller for AQM. We compare the performances of anti-windup algorithm with the conventional PI controller through ns simulations. The simulation results show that the PI controller with anti-windup method performs better than the conventional PI controller.

  • Queueing system with scheduled arrivals is useful in many fields where both customers' waiting time and servers' operation time (utilization) are important, and arrival time of customers is possible to be controlled. In this paper, we analyzed the operation of ship maintenance with the queueing system with scheduled arrival. Based on the model presented by Pegden and Rosenshine [8], who dealt with exponential service time, we extended the service time distributions to phase-type distribution which is able to include a wide range of real stochastic phenomena. Since most activities in the military are carried out under tight control and schedule, scheduled arrival queue has quite good applicability in this area. In this context, we applied queue with scheduled arrival to the optimal booking time decision for the ship maintenance in the navy.

  • This paper proposes an efficient centralized sin91e buffer management algorithm to arbitrate access contention mon processors on the multi-processor system for high-speed Packet filtering and proves that the algorithm provides reasonable performance by implementing it and applying it to a real multi-processor system. The multi-processor system for parallel packet filtering is modeled based on a network processor to distribute the packet filtering rules throughout the processors to speed up the filtering. In this paper we changed the number of processors and the processing time of the filtering rules as variables and measured the packet transfer rates to investigate the performance of the proposed algorithm.

  • In this study, a threshold policy is considered for the M/M/2 queueing system with server vacations. The probability generating function for the number of customers present in the system is derived using an embedded Markov chain approach. Then, assuming a linear cost structure, an efficient procedure to find an optimal threshold policy is presented. The Laplace-Stieltjes transofrm for th waiting time of an arbitrary customer under a "FIFO" discipline is also derived.o derived.

  • In general, crowded places, such as banks, government offices and hospitals, require the customer to wait for a certain period of time. Thus according to the order of the wait, customers takes waiting numbers. In this way, so customers should always check the order of waiting processes that they can not carry on another affairs. In this paper, we develop an application, that is SmartQ, managing queue using a mobile handset. SmartQ is an easy-to-use application allowing customers an alternative to the classic queue management systems. With this application, they are aware of the waiting conditions in real time for each of their services. They can indicate the time they wish to come and take a virtual ticket in the queue. It provides service notification, the number of waiting person, and expected waiting time.

  • Excessive complaints and traffic jams occurred as customers who visited the Drive-thru waited in a long line. Company S recommends DT Pass to reduce the queues. Therefore, this study confirmed the improvement in performance of the queue increasing the number of stores operated by two servers insteaol of one using a queue model. And then confirmed performance improvement by dividing them into DT and DT Pass. After that, the L value derived through the queue model and the number of queues in each store were compared to calculate the number of queues to be additionally provided. Through this, the validity of selecting the minimum number of queues in the future is verified based on the results derived in this study.

  • This paper proposes silence drop first(SDF) active buffer management algorithm to increase the voice capacity when silence suppression is used. This algorithm finds and drops silence packet rather than voice packet in the queue for resolving buffer overflow of queue. Simulations with voice codec of G.729A and G.711 are performed. By using proposed SDF algorithm, the voice capacity is increased by 84.21% with G.729A and 38.46% with G.711. Further more, SDF algorithm reduces the required link capacity and loosens the silence packet inter-arrival time limit to provide target voice quality compared with that of conventional algorithms.

  • The grid database management system is used for large data processing, high availability and data integration by grid environment. It has a replica for processing performance and high availability in each node. The grid database has a problem of inconsistency, when the update is occurred with a coincidently frequent. To solve this problem, in this paper proposed a version management method for consistency in the grid database. Proposed version manager manages a version of each replica. The version manager keeps a consistency of update operation when is occurred at each node by using a pending queue and waiting queue. Also the node keeps a consistency using a priority queue. So, proposed method has stable and fast update propagation. The proposed method shows stable and faster update propagation than traditional method by performance evaluation.

  • The major problem at a branch point for point-to-multipoint available bit rate(ABR) services in asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) networks is how to consolidate backward resource management(BRM) cells from each branch for a multicast connection. In this paper, we propose an efficient feedback consolidation algorithm based on an adaptive dynamic threshold(ADT) to eliminate the consolidation noise and the reduce the consolidation delay. The main idea of the ADT algorithm lies in that each branch point estimates the ABR traffic condition of the network through the virtual queue estimation and the transmission threshold of the queue level in branch points is adaptively controlled according to the estimation. Simulation results show that the proposed ADT algorithm can achieve a faster response in congestion status and a higher link utilization compared with the previous works.

  • The management of vehicular supply of "perishable" construction material, such as concrete mixes, faces a series of uncertainties such as weather, daily traffic patterns and accidents. Presented in this paper is a logistics control model for managing a hauling fleet with interrelated processes at both ends and queue capacities. Discrete event simulation is used to model the complex interactions of production units and the randomness of the real world. Two alternative strategies for ready mix concrete delivery, with and without an off-site waiting queue, are studied to compare supply performance. Secondly, the paper discusses the effect of an agent-based GPS tracking system providing real-time travel data that lessens the uncertainty of trucking time. The results show that the combination of GPS information with off-site queuing reduces productivity loss and process wastes of concrete placement as well as the idleness of supply trucks when crew or pump experience an unexpected stoppage.
