  • In this article, static analysis of a magneto-electro-elastic (MEE) beam subjected to various thermal loading and boundary conditions has been investigated. Influence of pyroeffects (pyroelectric and pyromagnetic) on the direct quantities (displacements and the potentials) of the MEE beam under different boundary conditions is studied. The finite element (FE) formulation of the MEE beam is developed using the total potential energy principle and the constitutive equations of the MEE material taking into account the coupling between elastic, electric, magnetic and thermal properties. Using the Maxwell electrostatic and electromagnetic relations, variation of stresses, displacements, electric and magnetic potentials along the length of the MEE beam are investigated. Effect of volume fractions, aspect ratio and boundary conditions on the direct quantities in thermal environment has been determined. The present investigation may be useful in design and analysis of magnetoelectroelastic smart structures and sensor applications.

  • In this study, we develop an optimal sourcing strategy considering compensation orders to mitigate the supply chain disruption risks. We considered two-echelon supply chain consisting of a single buyer and multiple suppliers who have fixed transaction cost and probabilistic disruption risks. Under this setting, we provide the joint optimization method to determine the number of suppliers and the order quantities. Through numerical examples, we provide managerial implications on the sourcing strategy by investigating changes in the order quantities and the number of suppliers due to the degree of supply chain disruption risks.

  • Fowler obtained thermodynamic quantities assuming the theory which could be derived by representing the system with microcanonical ensemble, in order to introduce the temperature T of the system proper, he considered the combined systems which are composed of the system proper and another arbitrary system that is in thermal contact with the former, and represented the combined system by a microcanonical ensemble, here, he used the steepest descent method in his calculation. This Fowler's treatment is not only unsatisfactory at the point of theoretical view but also he could not make the formulation of free energy of Helmholtz's so that this formular was forced to be assumed. From the point of Quantum Statistical Mechanical view, the materially closed system which is in an equilibrium state with the temperature T is best represented by canonical ensemble. At the actual derivation of the distribution law and thermodynamic quantities, however, in order to avoid the difficulty of calculation Tolman proceeded his calculation either representing the system proper by the grand-canonical ensemble or adding a certain limitation.

  • Protection against non-ionizing radiation(NIR) is the subject of an increasing interest but the use of very different concepts depending on the type of radiation or application, makes it rather difficult to compile studies and the data obtained in an uniformity in this field. The main object of the present paper is to summarizes and provide an inventory of concepts, quantities, units and terminology currently used for purposes of NIR protection. Furthermore a systematic classification and comparison of these quantities is given, and in particular the concepts used to quantify exposure limitation and radiation protection standards are summarized and discussed.

  • In this article, the problem of a two-dimensional thermoelastic half-space are studied using mathematical methods under the purview of the generalized thermoelastic theory with one relaxation time is studied. The surface of the half-space is taken to be thermally insulated and traction free. Accordingly, the variations of physical quantities due to by laser pulse given by the heat input. The nonhomogeneous governing equations have been written in the form of a vector-matrix differential equation, which is then solved by the eigenvalue approach. The analytical solutions are obtained for the temperature, the components of displacement and stresses. The resulting quantities are depicted graphically for different values of thermal relaxation time. The result provides a motivation to investigate the effect of the thermal relaxation time on the physical quantities.

  • In construction management, BoQ(Bill of Quantities) has been commonly used for the cost estimation. However, many problems have been recognized about the work items used in the BoQ that could be varied by the experience and knowledge of the estimators or the project. Also, there are lots of work items that have to be written in BoQ even though the cost proportion of those items is relatively lower than the others. In this study we consider the way how to organize optimally the work items through the analysis of case. The results of this study could be useful for improving the efficiency of preparing construction BoQ and conducting Quantity take-off in our construction management practices.

  • Nowadays since the customers of HDD's are interested in their noise levels in addition to their primary performances such as their average access time, capacity, HDD manufacturers make efforts on reducing the noise. The works to reduce noise are usually based on the measurable physical quantities such as SPL or acoustic intensity level. However, since the HDD noise is Judged by human beings, the basis of noise reduction should be human sensations. In this paper, the noise levels of various HDD's are evaluated by the human jury test to find a relationship between the physical quantities used for noise control and the human sensations of noise. Discrepancies are found in the judgments by the human beings and by the physical quantities. The loudness level, a psychoacoustic variable, is used to solve the discrepancy.

  • A new method is presented to determine two fundamental acoustic quantities of sound-absorbing materials such as characteristic impedance and propagation constant. In this study, the surface acoustic impedances of sound-absorbing materials are measured using the impedance tube and the anechoic chamber to determine the above acoustic quantities. The measured results are given for two typical sound-absorbing materials(glass wool and urethane foam) int the frequency range between 150 and 1, 600 Hz. The results are verified by other two known methods, which are Smith & Parrott method and Utsuno et al. method. The absorption coefficients calculated from the empirical models(Miki model for glass wool and Jung model for urethane foam) and two quantities by present method are in good agreement with the measured values.

  • In this paper we deals with Leibniz's definition of infinite and infinitely small quantities, infinite quantities and theory of quantified indivisibles in comparison with Galileo's concept of indivisibles. Leibniz developed 'method of indivisible' in order to introduce the integrability of continuous functions. also we deals with this demonstration, with Leibniz's rules of arithmetic of infinitely small and infinite quantities.

  • This paper presents a mathematical model for optimizing earthwork allocation plan that minimizes earthwork cost. The model takes into account operational constraints in the real-world earthwork such as material-type (i.e., quality level of material) and quantities excavated from cut-sections, required quality of material and quantities for each embankment layer, top-down cutting and bottom-up filling constraints, and allocation orders. These constraints are successfully handled by assuming the rock-earth material as the three dimensional (3D) blocks. The study is of value to project scheduler because the model identifies the optimal earth allocation plan (i.e., haul direction (cut and fill pairs), quantities of soil, type of material, and order of allocations) expeditiously and is developed as an automated system for usability. It is also relevant to estimator in that it computes more realistic earthworks costs estimation. The economic impact and validity of the mathematical model was confirmed by performing test cases.
