  • Objective: This study examined the relationships among social support in the workplace, social support outside the workplace, child care teachers' psychological burnout, and teacher-child interactions. Methods: The subjects of this study were 262 child care teachers and they responded to questionnaires on research variables. Data were analyzed using structural equation modeling. Results: First, social support outside the workplace had a direct effect on teacher-child interactions; that is, child care teachers, who perceived that they received a high level of social support outside the workplace, had high-quality interactions with children. Second, social support in the workplace had an indirect effect on teacher-child interactions through child care teachers' psychological burnout. In other words, child care teachers, who perceived that they received a high level of social support in the workplace, experienced less psychological burnout, which led to high-quality interactions with children. Conclusion/Implications: This study confirmed that the paths in which social support in the workplace and social support outside the workplace influence teacher-child interactions were different. Although the pathways were different, the results of this study emphasize that both types of social support are important factors that promote teacher-child interactions.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the level of quality of life and gender differences in predictors of quality of life among patients with coronary artery disease. Methods: Participants for this descriptive survey were 67 men and 65 women who signed informed consents. They were patients who had undergone coronary artery bypass graft surgery or percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty, or were on medication therapy after a heart attack. The Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36), Personal Resource Questionnaire-part (II), and the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale were used to measure quality of life, social support, and depression respectively. Gender and age were controlled because they were reported as influencing factors in previous studies. Results: There were significant differences in depression and quality of life between men and women however, social support was not significantly different by gender. In multiple regression analysis, depression was a significant predictor and explained 51.9% of quality of life for men. In women, depression and social support were significant predictors and explained 50.9% of quality of life. Conclusion: Factors influencing quality of life for men and women were different, and therefore, nurses need to consider their patients' gender and use specific strategies to improve quality of life for patients with coronary artery disease.

  • Purpose: This study was to identify the degree of health-promoting behavior and quality of life and the factors influencing quality of life of solitary elderly in rural areas. Method: The subjects of this study were 202 solitary elderly, and 65-89, who had been living in four rural areas. Data was collected through 4 questionnaires from July 10th, 2003 to August 30th, 2003. The collected data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Duncan's multiple-range test, Pearson correlation coefficient and Stepwise multiple regression with SPSS/PC. Results: The average item score for the health-promoting behavior was 2.43; the highest score on the subscale was self-actualization (M=2.58) with the lowest being exercise (M=2.05). 2) The average item score for the quality of life was 2.81; the highest score on the subscale was neighbor relationships (M=3.27) with the lowest being economic conditions (M=2.24). There were significant differences in the health-promoting behavior by educational level and leisure-activity, in the quality of life by age and religion. Quality of life scores correlated negatively with depression scores (r=-.063, p=.000) and positively with health-promoting behavior (r=.144, p=.000), social support scores (r=.383, p=.000). Stepwise multiple regression analysis for quality of life revealed that the most powerful predictor was health-promoting behavior. Health-promoting behavior, social support, depression and age explained 51.8% of the variance. Conclusion: These results suggested that elderly people in rural areas with high degree of quality of life are likely to be high in health-promoting behavior and social support and low in depression. Therefore, it is necessary to develop health promotion programs in due consideration of health-promoting behavior and social support and depression in order to enhance the quality of life of solitary elderly in rural areas.

  • Purpose: To study the quality of life and to identify associated factors among breast cancer patients undergoing treatment in national cancer centers in Nepal. Materials and Methods: One hundred breast cancer patients were selected and interviewed using a structured questionnaire. European Organization of Research and Treatment of Cancer EORTC-QLQ-C30 and EORTC-QLQ-BR23 were used to assess quality of life and modified Medical Outcome Study -Social Support survey(mMOS-SS) was used to assess social support. Only multi-item scales of EORTC C30 and BR23 were analyzed for relationships. Independent sample T-tests and ANOVA were applied to analyze differences in mean scores. Results: The score of global health status/quality of life (GHS/GQoL) was marginally above average (mean=52.8). The worst performed scales in C-30 were emotional and social function while best performed scales were physical and role function. In BR-23, most of the patients fell into the problematic group regarding sexual function and enjoyment. Almost 90% had financial difficulties. Symptom scales did not demonstrate many problems. Older individuals, patients with stage I breast cancer and thosewith good social support were found to have good GHS/GQoL. Of all the influencing factors, social support was established to have strong statistical associations with most of the functional scales: GHS/GQoL (0.003), emotional function (<0.001), cognitive function (0.020), social function (<0.001) and body image function (0.011). Body image was significantly associated with most of the influencing factors: monthly family income (0.003), type of treatment (<0.001), type of surgery (<0.001), stage of cancer (0.017) and social support (0.011). Conclusions: Strategies to improve social support of the patients undergoing treatment should be given priority and financial difficulties faced by breast cancer patients should be well addressed from a policy making level by initiating health financing system.
