The Impact of Communication on the Overall Quality of Life in Elderly Koreans

  • Background: Communication is important for the elderly to maintain existing social relationships while creating new relationships based on good communication skills to lessen psychological and emotional distress and lead a healthy life in advanced age. Aims: This study identifies the difference between the social network-based quality of communication life and the overall quality of life in the elderly and how much the quality of communication life affects the overall quality of life. Methods: This research includes a survey of the elderly aged 65 and over living in small cities of South Korea. Data sets of 201 elderly were analyzed. Results: This study found a significant correlation between the quality of communication life and the overall quality of life. Religion also influences the elderly's quality of communication life. The elderly's quality of communication life has 40% explanatory power of the overall quality of life. Conclusion: Consequently, senior citizens' quality of life will be improved through the enhanced quality of communication in addition to financial and health conditions by participating in various community activities similar to those provided by religion to increase opportunities for communication.

Relationship between Participation in the Elderly Job Project and Quality of Life: focused on the Social Capital Mediating Effect

  • This study investigates income support, labor opportunities, and social capital by the demographic characteristics of the elderly who participate in the elderly job project, and especially the relationship between social and quality of life. We want to provide empirical data on how the elderly vocational business ultimately affects the lives of the elderly through the intervention of social capital. The intervention effect of social capital is as follows. Satisfaction with the elderly job project has a great impact on the quality of life, trust, network, and social participation. In particular, trust in the quality of life of the elderly had a great influence on the quality of life and was indirectly effective. In addition, the intervention of social participation between social capital was known, and the elderly job project increased social participation to improve the quality of life of the elderly. Therefore, it can be evaluated that the elderly job project has an important positive effect on the quality of life of the elderly, and the social capital formed through the elderly job project plays a role in directly or indirectly improving the quality of life of the elderly.

귀속요인이 노인들의 삶의 질에 미치는 영향에 대한 비교 연구 - 한국노인과 미국이민 한국노인을 중심으로 - (Attributions to Quality of Life Between Korean and Korean-American Elderly)

  • Purpose: The present study was designed to explore and compare attributes of the quality of life between Korean elderly and Korean-American elderly. Method: The research design was a descriptive design and questionaries were used. Studies were done using questionnaires. Data were collected from convenient sample of 163 Korean elderly and 151 Korean-American elderly recruited from senior centers and churches. Collected data were analyzed by using SPSS/WIN 10.0. Results: There were significant difference between Korean elderly and Korean-American elderly in education and income. Korean-American elderly showed higher selfesteem, self-efficacy, and quality of life than those of Korean elderly. The influencing factors on quality of life in Korean elderly were defined as self-esteem and self-efficacy. And the influencing factor on quality of life in Korean-American elderly was defined as self-efficacy. Conclusion: In conclusion, the results of this study showed that self-efficacy was a very important factor as attribution to the quality of life for both elderly group. Therefore, self-efficacy should be promoted in nursing intervention in order to enhance the quality of life for both Korean and Korean-American elderly.

고령자 1인 가구의 스트레스와 우울증이 삶의 질에 미치는 영향 (The Effects of Stress and Depression on the Quality of Life in Single Elderly Households)

  • Objects: In this study, we analyzed the correlation between stress and depression related to the quality of life of one elderly household, and analyzed the influence of stress and depression on the quality of life. In this study, I tried to make a plan for improving the quality of life for one elderly. Methods: In this study, the frequency and percentage according to the general characteristics of one elderly household were frequency analyzed. And the mean and standard deviation of stress, depression, quality of life were analyzed on average. And continuous analysis of stress, depression, quality of life, etc., conducted a technical analysis. Relationship to stress, depression, quality of life, correlation analysis was done. The effect of stress and depression on the quality of life was linear regression analysis. SPSS Version 23.0 was used for analysis. Result: Increased stress and increased depression in elderly single households was a static (+) correlation. And the results of the regression analysis showed that the higher the stress and depression of one elderly household, the lower the quality of life. Conclusion: For the improvement of the quality of life of one elderly household, the government should support stress and depression prevention programs according to sex, age, number of chronic diseases.

가족동거노인과 독거노인의 건강상태, 우울 및 삶의 질 비교연구 (A Comparative Study on Health Status, Depression, and Quality of Life between the Elderly Living with Family and the Elderly Living Alone)

  • Purpose: This study was a descriptive survey research to compare and to examine the levels of health status, depression, and quality of life between the elderly living with family and the elderly living alone, the relations among the factors. Methods: Subjects were the 441 elderly over 65 years old(243 elderly living with family; 198 elderly living alone) in Seoul and Gyung-gi province. Data were collected from January to March, 2007. Collected data were analyzed through SAS/PC 11.0 version. Results: First, the health status and quality of life in the elderly living with family were higher than them in the elderly living alone. Also depression in the elderly living with family was lower than that in the elderly living alone. Second, in all elderly there was positive correlation between health status and depression. There were negative correlations between health status and quality of life, and between depression and quality of life. Third, the economic environments in all elderly did effect to the health status, depression, and quality of life. conclusion: In conclusion, it's requested a special attention of the current job level or interpersonal relationship of older people.

일 도시 시설노인들과 지역노인들의 건강관련 삶의 질 비교 (The comparison of health-related quality of life between the institutional elderly and the community living elderly)

  • The purpose of this study is to compare the level of health-related quality of life and relating factor between institutional elderly and community living elderly. The subjects were 390 from Sanatorium or Nursing home and 467 from the community in Kwangju. The results are followed : 1) A comparison of ADL between two groups, institutional elderly and community living elderly, resulted in that community elderly were more significantly independent in the areas of bathing and transfer than institutional elderly. 2) A comparison of IADL between two groups resulted in that : Community elderly were more independent in the areas of using telephone and transportation, food preparation, house keeping, and doing laundry. Institutional elderly were more independent in the area of handling finances. 3) In the case of poor health-related quality of life, institutional elderly showed 2.4 times in the dimension of physical fitness, 1.8 times in daily activity, 2 times in social activity, 2 times in pain, 26.7 times in social support, and 0.4 times in subjective quality of life higher than community elderly There was no significant differences in the rest of dimensions. 4) In institutional elderly, the analysis of variables related to the health-related quality of life resulted in that; The relating factors were sex, education, and chronic illness in the dimension of physical function. Direct contact with family or significant others in the dimension of social activity. Chronic illness in the dimension of pain and perceived health status. Direct or indirect contact with family or significant others over the phone or through letters in the dimension of social support. 5) The analysis of variables related to the health-related quality of life showed that community elderly has more relating variables in each area than institutional elderly. The relating factors were age, sex, and chronic illness in the dimension of physical function. Education and chronic illness in the dimension of emotional status. Age and chronic illness in the dimension of daily activity and social activity Education and chronic illness in the dimension of pain and perceived health status. Sex, education, family size in the dimension of social support. Education and chronic illness in the dimension of subjective quality-of-life. Throughout general daily activity, community elderly showed more satisfactory results than institutional elderly, but in the subjective area of health-related quality of life, such as subjective quality of life, institutional elderly group showed more positive results. And community elderly had more relating factors than institutional elderly. For the health care of the elderly that focused on quality of life, new approaches considering the characteristics of both group, institutional and community living elderly, are needed.

The Effects of Residential Satisfaction on the Quality of Life of Aging people: Comparison between the Elderly Living in the Community and the Elderly Living in Senior Housings

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the direct and indirect effects of residential satisfaction on the quality of life and to analyze the difference according to the residence type. The subjects of this study were 422 elderly people aged 65 or older residing in two metropolitan municipalities. The data were analyzed by using structural equation model by multi-group analysis. The results showed that the degree of satisfaction with the residential environment indirectly affected not only the quality of life of the elderly but also social participation activities. As a result of verifying the difference of the residential satisfaction and quality of life path according to the residence type, there was a difference in the route between groups according to the type of residence. This study is significant in that the elderly who have not been interested in the elderly housing policy have been investigated and the relationship between the residential satisfaction and quality of life of the elderly by residence type has been investigated .

여성노인의 삶의 질에 대한 주관적 구조 (A Study of the Subjectivity of Quality of Life in Elderly Women)

  • Purpose: The purpose of the study were to categorize the subjectivity of the quality of life in elderly women and to thereby understand the differences regarding quality of life desires. Methods: This study used a Q-methodology to measure the quality of life in elderly women. A Q sample was collected from in-depth and objective interviews and WHOQLO. Fourteen participants rated 28 selected Q-statements on a scale of 1 - 7. The collected data was analyzed using PC Quanl. Results: The principal component analysis identified 4 factors regarding the quality of life of elderly women. These categories were labeled 'hopelessness-oriented', 'relationship/adaptation-oriented', 'physical suffering-oriented', and 'self satisfaction-orientated'. Conclusion: Some of the factors regarding the quality of life of elderly women were determined through this research. Further research is necessary to set up and apply different the quality of life between men and women based on this result. The results of this study indicate that different approaches toward quality of life promotion programs are recommended based on the four factors of quality of life among elderly women.

성별에 따른 65세 이상 노인의 삶의 질에 관한 연구 (A Study on Sex-specific Quality of Life among the Elderly Aged 65 Years or Older)

  • 본 연구에서는 2013년도부터 2015년도까지 3년간의 지역사회건강조사 자료를 분석하여 65세 이상 남성노인과 여성노인의 인구사회학적특성, 건강행태 및 주관적 건강수준, 건강관련 삶의 제한 및 삶의 질에 대한 포괄적인 평가를 해보고자 하였다. 연구결과 여성노인이 남성노인보다 교육수준이 낮고 배우자가 없거나 가구 총 소득이 적고, 건강행태가 불량하고 삶의 제한에 따른 삶의 질 수준도 낮았다. 결과적으로 여성노인이 남성노인보다 삶의 질이 유의하게 낮았다. 남성노인과 여성노인 모두 다양한 요인들이 삶의 질에 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 남성노인의 경우 배우자의 유무, BMI 삶의 질에 영향을 미치지 않았지만 여성노인의 경우는 삶의 질에 영향을 미쳤다. 남성노인의 경우 흡연은 삶의 질에 영향을 미쳤지만 여성노인의 경우는 영향을 주지 않는 결과를 보였다. 이 결과들은 건강관련 삶의 질 수준이 상대적으로 더 낮다고 제시된 여성노인에 대한 보다 심층적인 연구가 수행될 필요가 있고 성별에 따라 노인의 삶의 질을 좀 더 효과적으로 증진시킬 수 있는 서비스와 프로그램 개발을 위한 노력도 필요하다.

노인의 삶의 질 영향 요인 (Factors Related to the Quality of Life of the Elderly)

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to examine the factors related to quality of life in elderly. Methods: This was a descriptive correlation study. The subjects were 356 elderly over 65 years old. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation coefficients, and multiple regression with a SAS statistics. Results: The predictors of quality of life in elderly were depression, life satisfaction, self esteem, economic state, family support, perceived health state, and age. These factors explained 71.9% of the total variance. Conclusion: These findings suggest the need to develop nursing strategy to improve quality of life in elderly. To improve the quality of life in elderly, the above major influencing factors should be considered.
