  • Objectives: The purpose of the study was to investigate the content analysis of daily tooth cleaning service records by caregivers in a long-term care facility. Methods: The data were analyzed by qualitative research based on content analysis of the daily records of the processes and results of daily tooth cleaning service. Twenty caregivers provided tooth, gum and denture cleaning service after breakfast, lunch, and dinner to 48 elderly residents. The study lasted about two weeks(from August 4 to August 20, 2014). The researcher reconstructed the language by repeatedly reviewing the caregivers statements in the records. The content categories were derived from the records through a reiterative manual comparative analysis. Using constant comparison method, reconstructed meanings were incorporated into various meanings and reanalyzed by final categories called as analytic coding. In order to validate the reliability, 6 times of discussion made the common meanings through a master's degree student and a dental hygiene professor. Results: The caregivers identified lack of understanding and ability to recognize the functional physical and mental changes in the elderly. The elderly had difficulty in recognizing silent communication and daily tooth cleaning. The caregivers were so strenuous in taking care of the daily tooth cleaning service for the elderly. At last, they gave up the daily tooth cleaning service and took on it to the guardians. They found that there was no social supporting network for oral health of the elderly residents. Conclusions: Caregivers had insufficient understanding of the functional physical and mental changes in the elderly residents, and they had difficulty providing daily tooth cleaning service to the elderly due to poor skill and abilities.

  • In Asia, where the aging population is growing rapidly, as the funeral service industry develops and the market grows. The economic value and interest of funeral services is increasing. However, Korea's funeral services are being developed in a biased direction, focusing only on funeral services, after death. Compared to the case of advanced funeral services in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Japan, not only the funeral but also the care of the deceased's family and acquaintances around us are developing. It is appropriate to use a method based on ethnography and User eXperience. For this purpose, the method of collecting and analyzing the ethnography and user experience data of actual resident and visitor was deduced in persona method in the next ten years, and funeral service centered on resident and visitor. In this study, qualitative data centered on the future direction of funeral services, focusing on the resident (family) and the guest who are the principals of services from the perspective of service science. It is difficult to derive meaningful results from the process of collecting, processing, and interpreting big data in general, and in this case, the data analysis method is based on ethnography and user eXperience.) Is appropriate. For this purpose, the method of collecting and analyzing the ethnography and user experience data of the actual resident and the visitor was deduced in the persona method in detail after 10 years. In addition, the future direction of funeral services centered on residence and visitor was presented.

  • The purpose of this study is to explore and understand the meaning of 'Good Death' that the Korean aged people are generally thinking based on their values and the sentiments. For this purpose, we carried out individual and in-depth interviews with 40 aged persons living in Seoul taking their genders and social-economic status into consideration from March to May 2003. We applied qualitative research method to this study. Eight graduate students were responsible for the interviews. They majored in gerontology or had experiences of field work with old persons. It took an average of one and a half hour and maximum of two hours for each of the interviews. All of the processes of each interview were tape-recorded under the agreement with each interviewee. The main and sub themes from the data can be classified to seven categories according to the Phenomenological Approach designed by Colaizzi(1978). The main theme of good death that most of the interviewees considered was 'Blessed Death', very similar to 'Death Fortune' in the five good fortunes found in Korean tradition and the Confucianism. Also, the main concept is classified to seven sub-themes: (1) Not seeing their children's death; (2) Dying in front of their children; (3) Not to be a burden of their children during their lives; (4) Dying after doing all of their duties as parents; (5) Dying with no pain; (6) Completing the natural span of their lives; and (7) Prepared death. Thus, 'Blessed Death' that Korean aged people consider seems to be very closely related with the lives, health, happiness and success of their children. Based on the findings, we concluded that both social policy makers and social service providers are required to keep in mind the meanings of 'Good death' that most of the Korean aged people consider in order to help them enjoy successful aging during their remaining lives.

  • Healthcare and data science are often linked through finances as the industry attempts to reduce its expenses with the help of large amounts of data. Data science and medicine are rapidly developing, and it is important that they advance together. Data science is a driving force in transition of healthcare systems from treatment-oriented to preventive care in healthcare 3.0 era. It enables customized precision-based medicine that current healthcare systems cannot facilitate, and discovers more cost-effective treatment. Currently, healthcare big data is in the reality of medical institution, public health, medical academia, pharmaceutical sector as well as insurance agency. With this motivation, the medical college of Soonchunhyang university has performed a 'healthcare data science initiative(HDSI)' since 2014. Most of domestic HDSI programs focus on short-term contents such as mentoring and sharing cases for data science. Therefore, it is difficult to provide education tailored to the level of skills and job competency required at the practical site. Soonchunhyang HDSI implemented specialized strategies for improving resilience and response to changes in the IT education of current healthcare with the emphasis on the need for systematic activation of the practical HDSI. The HDSI has been performed as a part of on industry-academic link program in CK-1. Through quantitative and qualitative analysis, this paper discussed the HDSI process, performance, achievement, and implications.

  • Objectives: This study was conducted to investigate the vitamin D status and to determine the association between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] concentrations and consumption frequencies of vitamin D rich foods in Korean adults and older adults. Methods: Subjects were 10,374 adults and 2,792 older adults participating in the 2008-2009 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES). Consumption frequencies of vitamin D rich foods were estimated by using a qualitative food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). Eleven food items such as beef, egg, mackerel, tuna, yellow corvina, pollack, anchovy, mushroom, milk, yogurt, and ice cream were selected as vitamin D rich foods based on previous research. Results: The proportions of deficiency (< 12 ng/mL), inadequacy (12-20 ng/mL) and sufficiency (${\geq}20ng/mL$) of serum 25(OH)D concentrations from June to November and December to May in adults were 8.8%, 42.3%, 48.8%, and 28.2%, 52.8%, 19.1%, respectively. The proportions of deficiency, inadequacy and sufficiency of serum 25(OH)D concentrations from June to November and December to May in older adults were 10.1%, 32.4%, 57.5%, and 24.1%, 45.4%, 30.5%, respectively. The mean serum 25(OH)D concentrations in adults were positively related to the consumption frequencies of mackerel, anchovy, all fish, milk and milk dairy products. The mean serum 25(OH)D concentrations in older adults were positively related to the consumption frequencies of yellow corvina and negatively related to the consumption frequencies of ice cream. Conclusions: Our results suggest that Korean adults were more deficient in serum 25(OH)D concentrations than older adults. The consumption of vitamin D rich foods may affect vitamin D status in Korean adults. Further studies are required to confirm these findings.

  • This study is to provide evidence-based recommendations for the most-effective treatments of benign prostatic hyperplasia based on patient preference or clinical need, and to meta-analyze the Korean literatures for the development of BPH treatment guidelines. For these analyses, extensive literature searches (208 articles), with priority given to the Korean Journal of Urology, were conducted from 1960 to August, 1996. Meta-analysis, like all statistical analysis, has two main functions: data summarization (qualitative meta-analysis) and smoothing o. pattern recognition (quantitative meta-analysis). As well, critical reviews and syntheses with the mean and 90-percent confidence intervals for the likelihood were used to evaluate empirical evidence and significant outcomes of the BPH treatment literatures (106 articles). For this task, the Methodologic Panel for BPH Guidelines was composed of multidisciplinary experts in the field. The results of the study were summarized as follows: For all that watchful waiting is an appropriate treatment strategy for the majority of patients with prostatism, we couldn't find the Korean literatures which carried this article. The literatures on alpha-1-adrenergic receptor blockers provide no evidence to suggest that any one alpha blocker is more effective than another. The finasteride reduces the size of the prostate, on average, and leads to a small yet perceptible reduction in sysptoms. Of all treatment options, prostate surgery with transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP), transurethral incision of the prostate (TUIP), and so on, offers the best chance for symptom improvement. However, surgery also has the highest rates of significant complications. Therefore, surgery need not always be a treatment of last resort. Balloon dilation of the prostatic urethra is clearly less effective than surgery in relieving symptoms, but it is associated with fewer complications. Emerging technologies for treating BPH include lasers, coils, stents, thermal therapy and hyperthermia. Established technologies will also be reanalyzed as results of new trials are reported. Although this study has some limitations due to lacking for good quality literatures, ' it provides a cornerstone for our medical research. It represents the most current scientific knowledge regarding the clinical epidemiology including treatment of BPH. It will be revised and updated as needed.

  • This study was to analyze characteristics based on tolerance and trophic guilds and to determine the level of total mercury in tissues of sentinel species, Zacco platypus at 3 sampling sites of the Mangyeong River in 2007. Total sampled fishes were 26 species and the most dominant species was Zacco temminckii (47%). Fish community analysis was resulted that eveness index and diversity index showed low value at S1. However, diversity index and richness index at other sites showed high. According to various guilds analysis, relative abundance of sensitive species was 70% and 42% at S1 and S2, respectively. While sensitive species were decreased (1%) and tolerant species were increased (60%) at S3. It was mainly carried to the impacts of wastewater treatment plants near the location. Relative abundance of insectivore species was decreased from up (S1) to midstream area (S3). In addition, chemical water quality, based on analyses of BOD, COD, TP, TN, EC, MPN and SS concentration showed similar trends. Qualitative Habitat Evaluation Index (QHEI) was averaged 164, judged as "good" habitat condition. Average concentrations of total [Hg] was 146.9 ${\mu}g$ $kg^{-1}$. In the muscles of total [Hg] was the highest, and then followed by kidney, vertebrae, liver, and gills. According to FDA standards (500 ${\mu}g$ $kg^{-1}$) of Korea, total [Hg] has not affected to the individual fish health.

  • This study aims to explore the realities of life and the utilizing experience of housing improvement service among the vulnerable living in the indecent house. For this purpose of this study, we conducted in-depth interview with nine interviewees. As the result of this study, we figured out that the vulnerable living in the poor house had experienced psychological withdrawals, restricted of social activities, health problems, and feelings of insecurity. However, they could not afford to improve their houses because they were living below or near the poverty line. Local government provided the housing improvement service to cope with this problem. The people received this service gave positive reviews. Since their residential environment was improved, they felt easiness, strengthened social relationships, and expected a warm winter. Despite of 'thankful service', the housing improvement service had some limitations. Because of the limited budgets, full-scale construction services were unfeasible. Also we figured out it is necessary to make a change in housing policies for the people living in the poor houses. In the conclusion, we discussed and proposed the policies and practical suggestions.
