  • This study was designed to investigate the effects of pyroligneous liquor on lipid metaboilsm in serum of SPF/VAF Cri/Bgi CD rats. Male CD rats were fed basic diet prepared in our Lab., and PL-0 (control), PL-1, PL-25, PL-50, PL-75 groups were prepared with pyroligneous liquor (35% of Choa Co. Ltd.) of 0%, 1%, 25%, 50% and 75% in purified water per day for 8 weeks. Body weights and food intakes almost did not change in these five groups, and triglyceride (TG) levels were significantly decreased (20.5% and 19.5%, respectively) in these PL-25 and PL-50 groups compared with control group. Total and LDL-cholesterol levels were markedly decreased (20.7%, 16.3% and 20.3%, 116.9%, respectively) in these PL-25 and PL-50% groups, but HDL-cholesterol levels were significantly increased about 36.4% and 25.5% in serum of PL-25 and PL-50 groups compared with control group. Atherogenic indices were also remarkedly decreased (63.0%, and 50%, respectively) in these PL-25 and PL-50 groups compared with control group. These results suggest that long term administration orally of pyroligneous liquor in 25 to 50% may inhibit chronic degenerative disease through improving of lipid metabolism of lower TG & LDL-cholesterol and higher HDL-cholesterol, and lower AJ.

  • This study was designed to investigate the effects of pyroligneous liquor on oxygen radicals and their scavenger enzymes in the liver of Cri/Bgi CD rats (7 rats per group). Male rats were fed a basic diet prepared in our Lab., PL-0 (Control), PL-1, PL-25, PL-50 and PL-75 groups were Prepared to be 0%, 1%, 25%, 50% and 75%with distilled water using pyroligneous liquor (35% of Choa Co. Ltd.), and were administrated orally for 8 weeks. Superoxide radical contents in liver mitochondria and microsomes were significantly decreased to 12-14%, 11-15%, respectively, in these PL-25 and PL-50groups compared with the control group. Hydroxyl radical content in mitochondria and microsomes were markedly decreased to 12-20% and 17%, respectively, in these PL-25 and PL-50% groups compared with the control group. Hydrogen peroxide content in mitochondria and microsomes were significantly decreased about 15-12% and 22-20% in liver of PL-25 and PL-50 groups compared with the control group. Mn-SOD and Cu/Zn-SOD activities in liver of PL-25 and PL-50 groups were remarkably increased to 15-25%, 11-16%, respectively, compared with the control group. GPx activities in mitochondria and microsomes were significantly increased in the liver of PL-25 and PL-50 groups compared with the control group. CAT activities in mitochondria and cytosol were significantly increased to 12-14%, 15-27%, respectively, in the liver of PL-25 and PL-50 groups compared with the control group. These results suggest that long term administration orally of 25 and 50% pyroligneous liquor may effectively inhibit the formation of oxygen free radicals, and also scavenger enzyme activities significantly increase through the administration orally.

  • The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of odor removal such as $NH_3$, volatile organic acid (VOA) during the pig manure composting using of the Pyroligneous acid liquor (PAL). The odor removal efficiencies were evaluated throughout the dilution rates (${\times}0$, ${\times}100$, ${\times}300$) of PAL. The results of the study are as followings. $NH_3$ content in all treatments (volume 10L) was approximately 8 mg/kg in compost piles on the first day. In the case of control treatment, it was increased by 46 mg/kg within 10 days and was not detected after 25 days. In contrast, those levels in PA-100 and PA-300 treatments were similar values at 38 mg/kg within 6 days and decreased after 15 days. And GC. equipment was used to analyze the volatile organic acids (acetic acid, butyric acid, isobutyric acid, isovaleric aicd, 2,3-methylbutyric aicd, and propionic acid). The concentration of acetic acid and butyric acid were the higher than other VOAs during the initial composting day and sharply declined after 15 days. The VOAs in the control treatment were detected until 40 days, but PA-100 and PA-300 treatments were not measured after 15 days. The PA-100 in all treatments was the most effective treatment for $NH_3$ gas and VOAs reduction during composting. In addition, these studies for the odor reduction in compost manufacture process would have to research on more effective methods for the PAL utilization in agro-biological aspects.

  • This study is to compare food components and the sensory properties of common and functional Porphyra yezoensis, Pyroligneous liquor, Salicornia herbacea L. and Salicornia herbacea L. treated with oak charcoal. The samples used in this study were provided by a local manufacturer. We analyzed their proximate composition, mineral content, heavy metal content and amino acids. We conducted the sensory evaluation before and after grilling Porphyra yezoenis. Common components are more plentiful in functional Porphyra yezoenis than in common except for carbohydrate and crude fiber. In the case of mineral content, generally functional Porphyra yezoensis contains much more mineral than common except for magnesium and zinc. Especially Salicornia herbacea L. treated with oak charcoal contains abundant iron. Also, Salicornia herbacea L. contains a lot of calcium potassium, copper and sodium. There is a little more heavy metal except for chromium, cadmium and lead in Salicomia herbacea L. treated with oak charcoal than in common that contains a lot of chromium, cadmium and lead, although a wide difference was not discovered between them. In the case of composed amino acid, there are much glutamic acid, glycine, isoleucine and phenylalanine in both Porphyra yezoensis. Especially alanine and phenylalanine are trebled in functional Porphyra yezoensis. Also, there are far more serine and lysine in Salicornia herbacea L. and Salicornia herbacea L. treated with oak charcoal than in common Porphyra yezoensis and Pyroligneous liquor. In the case of the sensory properties, there isn't a big difference before grilling Porphyra yezoensis; however, after grilling, most functional Porphyra yezoenis had good sensory properties results, especially Salicornia herbacea L. were better than Pyroligneous liquor.

  • To investigate the effect of pyroligneous acid liquor (PAL) on the maturity of pig manure compost, PAL was treated to the compost piles. The treatments included applications of 100 and 300 times diluted PAL in addition to the control. The compost piles were stirred in three times at the 1st, 10th, and 25th day of composting. Temperature in the compost pile of control treatment increased from 28 to $60^{\circ}C$ within 10 days and remained nearly at the level until 30th day, then it began to decrease. On the other hand, temperature of the PAL-100 and PAL-300 treatments reached 65 to $70^{\circ}C$ within 8 days and became stabilized until 30th day, then the temperature decreased to about $28^{\circ}C$. However, the temperature of control was stabilized approximately at the 40th day. Initially, the pH of control treatment dropped from 8.2 to slightly above pH 8.0 during 4th day, but that of the PAL-100 treatment declined to 7.8. Among treatments, pH value of PAL-100 treatment was the lowest, which was about 7.3 after becoming stabilization. Also the germination index (GI) was increased at all treatments. The C/N ratio range of PAL-100 treatment was better balanced than others and was at 24.3. Moreover the round paper chromatogram of extracted solution of compost of PAL-100 treatment was the sharpest and clearest among treatments. The GI values of control, PAL-100, and PAL-300 in 60 days of composting were about 108, 120, and 118 in germination test using chinese cabbage, respectively. It can be concluded that the addition of diluted PAL solution is effective in composting of pig manure.

  • This study was performed to test the insecticidal and antimicrobial activity of plant extracts from clove, Sophora flavescens Aiton and neem. As the result of antimicrobial activity test, clove extract showed the strongest activity against Botrytis cinerea. In insecticidal activity test, the extract of Sophora flavescens Aiton was the highest against Nilaparvata lugens. The pyroligneous liquor (10%) and emulsified spreader (10%) were added to the extracts of clove and Sophora, respectively, to apply the environment-friendly rice field. In the field treated clove extract, disease damage occurred 49.1% and insect damage occurred 29.5% compared to control plot (100%). In the field treated Sophora extract, disease damage was 56.7% and insect damage was 21.0% compared to control plot (100%). In conclusion, plant extracts from Sophora and clove could control about 50% of disease and about 70% of insect damage that they could be used as environment-friendly resources to control disease and insect in rice farming.

  • In this study, we were clearly identify the behaviour characteristics on particle size distribution of a condensing species by injection condition of HMDS (Hexa Methyl Di-Silazane, silica precursor that is one of liquid adsorbents) to remove condensing gaseous species as using pyroligneous liquor generated during carbonization process of biomass as precursor of condensing gaseous species. When using HMDS to remove the condensing gaseous species by growth machanism of particles, we could be controlled properly particles size such as amount of adsorbent injection, residence time, heating temperature and MFC flux. Especially, in case of using the silica precursor, in consideration of the physical and chemical properties of the boiling point, the specific gravity and the molecular weight, we found that the condensing species could be effectively controlled by particles granulation.

  • This experiment was conducted to improve activity of Spodoptera litura Nucleopoly-hedrovirus (SINPV) combined with organic and functional matters. In combination of SINPV mixed with organic matters, LT$_{50}$ values of SINPV 1.0${\times}$10$^{5}$ PIBs/$m\ell$ combined with boric acid of 2,000 ppm were 4.5 days. It was 1.5 days shorter than SINPV 1.0${\times}$10$^{5}$ PIBs/$m\ell$ alone. The body weight of larva infected with SINPV 1.0${\times}$10$^{5}$ PIBs/$m\ell$ combined with boric acid of 2,000ppm was not increased, and S. litura was completely dead in 7 days after treatment. It suggested that addition of boric acid in SINPV application enhanced the pathogenicity against S. litura larvae. In laboratory experiment of combination of SINPV with functional matters, LT$_{50}$values of SINPV 1.0${\times}$10$^4$ PIBs/$m\ell$ alone were 7.3 days, but those of SINPV 1.0${\times}$10$^4$ PIBs/$m\ell$ with electrolyzed oxidizing water, pyroligneous liquor or kitosan were 10.4, 9.3 and 11.2 days, respectively. Functional matter could be suppressed the insecticidal activity of SINPV
