This study was performed to investigate the effects of purslane extracts on growth inhibition of Escherichia coli KCTC 2441. The purslane extract is effective on retarding growth of Escherichia coli KCTC 2441 and effect of its extract was founded from 1% concentration. At 7% the growth of Escherichia coli KCTC 2441 was suddenly retarded. The stem of purslane in a sunny place on June is more effective than its leaf. Leaves with a red violet color has high effect on retarding growth of Escherichia coli KCTC 2441. These results suggest that purslane extract is effective in growth inhibition of Escherichia coli KCTC 2441.
This study assessed the effects of treatment with sap extract from onion residues postharvest and purslane on the quality and quantity of organic onions. At the bending stage, onions treated with the sap extract showed vigorous growth, with higher plant heights, more leaves, and longer sheath lengths than untreated onions. The onion yield was significantly increased when the plant was treated with extracted sap as compared with that of untreated plants (p<0.05). The bulb weight distribution of onions in the mixed onion and purslane treatment was also significantly increased (~300 g) as compared with that of the other treatment (p<0.05). Except for CaO and S, the mineral content of the onions produced from plants treated with the onion and purslane extract mixture was higher than those of onions in the other treatment. The hardness of onions produced from plants treated with the onion and purslane extract was significantly increased (8% and 20%, respectively) as compared with that of onions produced from plants treated with the onion extract only or no treatment (p<0.05). However, there was no significant difference in the sugar contents of the onions produced from extract-treated and nonextract-treated plants. Postharvest, the content of inorganic components (phosphate, calcium, sulfuric acid, and manganese) was higher in soil treated with the onion extract than in soil treated with the onion and purslane extract and non-treated soil. It can be concluded that residues left after onion harvests and purslane extract can be used as natural and environmentally friendly materials for the cultivation of organic onions.
A study has been conducted to investigate the radioprotective effects of purslane extracts (P) when i.p. injected before irradiation (R). For studying the amino acid composition, three groups of ICR mice (7-week-old) were tested. The first group i.p. injected with purslane extract for 5 days were irradiated with 6 Gy of ${\gamma}$-radiation (P+R). The second group was irradiate with 6 Gy without any pretreatment (R). The third group was non-irradiated control (CT). Each group divided into two groups for the survival rate study, one injected with saline (S) and the other injected with purslane extract (P) for five days and then irradiated with 8 Gy. The amino acid composition of urine samples were analyzed with HPLC for 19 days after irradiation. A few kinds of amino acids such as lysine and methionine in urine from P+R group increased in comparison with those from CT or R group. The survival rate of P group maintained much higher than that of S group during experimental period. The results obtained may support that this plant has radioprotective substances by means of life-lengthening, not of urine amino acid components.
One of the main microorganisms causing diarrheal diseases is Campylobacter jejuni. Purslane or Portulaca oleracea is an edible plant containing polyphenols that has been widely used as a folk remedy for treatment of diarrhea for a long time. This study was performed to investigate the antimicrobial activity of fermented P. oleracea extracts made with probiotics and plant-origin lactic acid bacteria(PLAB) isolated from P. oleracea against C. jejuni. Lactobacillus rhamnosus, L. acidophilus, L. bulgaricus, L. delbrueckii, L. plantarum, Leuconostoc mesenteroides and Bifidobacterium longum were applied to P. oleracea to make a fermentation broth of purslane. Leuconostoc mesenteroides and the lactic acid bacteria isolated from P. oleracea grew best in the fermentation broth of P. oleracea extracts when the broth was combined with 2% yeast extract, 1% peptone, and 0.05 to 1% potassium phosphate. The number of viable cells in the fermentation broth containing purslane extracts after 48 hours increased to $1{\times}10^{12}\;CFU/m{\ell}$ and remained at $1.3{\times}10^{10}\;CFU/m{\ell}$ after refrigeration for 2 weeks. The pH and acidity of purslane-fermented broth after 48 hours of fermentation was 3.7 and 3.14, respectively, which show that the fermentation broth was within the range of the general standards of fermented dairy products. The antimicrobial activity of the fermented P. oleracea extracts was determined using the liquid culture method. The 10 $mg/m{\ell}$ concentration of the fermented P. oleracea extract made with Leuconostoc mesenteroides and the lactic acid bacteria isolated from purslane showed the strongest antimicrobial activity against C. jejuni. The fermentation broth of purslane with the probiotics retarded the growth of C. jejuni for 48 hours at $42^{\circ}C$.

The frequency of obesity has risen dramatically in recent years but only few safe and effective drugs are currently available. In addition, obesity can induce type 2 diabetes (T2DM), hyperlipidemia and fatty liver disease. Recently, protective effect of purslane extract (PE) on obesity has been reported, but little is known about the role and mechanism of PE in obesity. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of PE on obesity and diabetes in obese mice. In addition, the effect of PE was compared with anti-obesity and diabetes drugs. High-fat diet (HFD)-induced obese mice were treated for 8 weeks with drugs as follows: PE, orlistat, metformin, voglibose or pioglitazone. While PE mixed with normal diet did not have any effects on BW in non-obese mice, PE mixed with HFD significantly reduced BW gain, insulin resistance, and glucose intolerance, without affecting food intake and appetite in obese mice. The effect was comparable to the effects of anti-obesity and diabetes drugs. Furthermore, PE significantly increased the activity of hepatocellular anti-oxidant enzymes, leading to protection of liver from oxidative stress in obese mice. These results suggest that PE treatment may be a useful tool for preventing obesity and complication of obesity.
Extracts of common purslane(Portulaca oleracea L.) showed to possess some antifungal substances which inhibited the mycelial growth of the phytopathogenic fungi tested;Valsa mali, Alternaria kikuchiana and Pyricularia oryzae. These antifungal substances were found to be soluble in methanol and were regarded as kinds of lipid. In order to isolate the antifungal substances, the extracts of common purslane were concentrated by evaporation under reduced pressure and extracted with methanol The methanol solution was subjected to silica gel-florisil column and divided into lipid and non-lipid fractions. Lipid fractions only showed antifungal activity against the fungi tested. The effective substances contained in the extracts of common purslane inhibited not only the mycelial growth but also the spore germination of the fungi.

Five antifungal substances were isolated from the long-term storaged extract of common purslane, and identified as isobutyric, butyric, isovaleric, valerie and caproic acids belonging to short-chain fatty acids (C4C6). Each of these fatty acids showed more or less antifungal potency against spore germination and mycelial growth of Alternaria alternata Japanese pear pathotype in vitro. Antifungal potency of each fatty acid against spore germination was greater than that against the mycelial growth. No one of these fatty acids completely inhibited the mycelial growth at concentration lower than 200 ppm, while 50 ppm of caproic acid and 200 ppm of valerie acid completely inhibited the spore germination. The results of bioassay also suggested that chain-length of the fatty acids might be related with the antifungal potency, since fatty acids with longer chain showed higher antifungal potency.
This study was conducted in order to compare the biological activities of water extracts and sugar immersion extracts of green pepper (Capsicum annuum L.), purslane (Portulaca oleracea L.) and shiitake (Lentinula edodes (Berk.) Pegler) by measuring total polyphenol and flavonoid contents, antioxidant activities and inhibitory effects on ${\alpha}$-amylase and ${\alpha}$-glucosidase. The contents of total polyphenols and flavonoids were higher in water extracts than in sugar immersion extracts. The anti-oxidative activities of water and sugar immersion extracts were measured using the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) diammonium salt (ABTS) radical scavenging activity assay and reducing power assay. All extracts scavenged radicals in a concentration-dependent manner, and water extracts showed stronger radical scavenging activity and reducing power than sugar immersion extract. However, they all exhibited lower activities than ascorbic acid. Compared to the anti-diabetic drug acarbose, which was used as a positive control, the two types of extracts exhibited low ${\alpha}$-glucosidase inhibitory activities, although the activity of sugar immersion extracts were 2-fold higher than that of water extracts. ${\alpha}$-Amylase inhibitory action was not observed for any of the extracts. Finally, by cytotoxicity test, we confirmed that sugar immersion extracts were safer than water extracts. These results indicate that water extracts and sugar immersion extracts of green pepper, purslane and shiitake have different advantages in terms of their antioxidant and anti-diabetic effects, respectively.
As a result of screening search for biologically active substances to weed seeds among higher plants, MeOH extract from Rhathiolepis ovata Briat was found to inhibit germination of test weeds considerably. In the course of purifying the active substances, pinoresinol which showed very similar behavior with the active fraction on various chromatographies, was isolated from the same source, spectrally identified and bioassayed. Pinoresinol exhibited germination inhibitory activity against the common purslane (Portulaca oleracea L.) only ; the inhibitory effect was about 55% at concentration of 5 mg/ml.
This experiment was conducted to determine the presence of allelopathic substance in Portulaca oleracea L. Water and methanol extract from P. oleracea markedly inhibited the germination of lettuce, rice, raddish etc., indicating the presence of biological substances. The biochemical substances such as ferulic, p-coumaric, salicylic, vanillic, p-hydroxybenzoic acid etc., belonging to phenolic compounds were detected in a large amount, which may be responsible for exhibiting inhibitory effects. Various phenolic compounds were detected from different samples such as freshly, dried plants, seeds and callus. The highest amount of tannic and gallic acids were detected in dried samples of P. oleracea, the highest grantity of salicylic and vanillic acids in fresh samples, the largest amount of ferulic acid in seed sample, the highest amount of p-hydroxybenzoic and p-chlorobenzoic acids in callus. Linolenic acid was presented in amount of 9.203 mg/g in dried plant of P. oleracea as one of the major fatty acids and oxalic acid presented 27.941 mg/g as one of the major organic acids. These compounds seemed to be related to inhibitory effect of P. oleracea which needs further study.
