Mg and Mg alloys are promising materials for light weight high strength applications. In this paper, grain refinement of pure Mg using severe plastic deformation was tried to enhance the mechanical properties of the hard-to-deform metallic material. The microstructure and the mechanical properties of Mg processed by equal channel angular pressing(ECAP) at various processing temperatures were investigated experimentally. ECAP with channel angle of $90^{\circ}$ and corner angle of $0^{\circ}$ was successful at $300^{\circ}C$ without fracture of the samples during the processing. The hardness of the ECAP processed Mg decreased with increasing ECAP processing temperature. The effect of temperature on the hardness and microstructure of the ECAP processed Mg were explained by the dislocation glide in the basal plane and non-basal slip systems and by the dynamic recrystallization and recovery.
PURPOSE. This study focused on in vitro cell differentiation and surface characteristics in a magnesium coated titanium surface implanted on using a plasma ion source. MATERIALS AND METHODS. 40 commercially made pure titanium discs were prepared to produce Ti oxide machined surface (M) and Mg-incorporated Ti oxide machined surface (MM). Surface properties were analyzed using a scanning electron microscopy (SEM). On each surface, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity, alizarin red S staining for mineralization of MC3T3-E1 cells, and quantitative analysis of osteoblastic gene expression, were evaluated. Actin ring formation assay and gene expression analysis of TRAP and GAPDH performing RT-PCR were performed to characterize osteoclast differentiation on mouse bone marrow-derived macrophages (BMMs). RESULTS. MM showed similar surface morphology and surface roughness with M, but was slightly smoother after ion implantation at the micron scale. M was more hydrophobic than MM. No significant difference between surfaces on ALP activity at 7 and 14 days were observed. Real-time PCR analyses showed similar levels of mRNA expression of the osteoblast phenotype genes; osteopontin (OPN), osteocalcin (OCN), bone sialoprotein (BSP), and collagen 1 (Col 1) in cell grown on MM at 7, 14 and 21 days. Alizarin red S staining at 21 days showed no significant difference. BMMs differentiation increased in M and MM. Actin ring formation assay and gene expression analysis of TRAP showed osteoclast differentiation to be more active on MM. CONCLUSION. Both M and MM have a good effect on osteoblastic cell differentiation, but MM may speed the bone remodeling process by activating on osteoclast differentiation.

This study was intended to investigate the effect of the amount of magnesium addition and heat treatment in the Al-Mg coating film in order to improve corrosion resistance of aluminum coating. Al-Mg alloy films were deposited on cold rolled steel by physical vapor deposition sputtering method. Heat treatment was fulfilled in an nitrogen atmosphere at the temperature of $400^{\circ}C$ for 10 min. The morphology was observed by SEM, component and phase of the deposited films were investigated by using GDLS and XRD, respectively. The corrosion behaviors of Al-Mg films were estimated by exposing salt spray test at 5 wt.% NaCl solution and measuring polarization curves in deaerated 3 wt.% NaCl solution. With the increase of magnesium content, the morphology of the deposited Al-Mg films changed from columnar to featureless structure and particle size was became fine. The x-ray diffraction data for deposited Al-Mg films showed only pure Al peaks. However, Al-Mg alloy peaks such as $Al_3Mg_2$ and $Al_{12}Mg_{17}$ were formed after heat treatment. All the sputtered Al-Mg films obviously showed good corrosion resistance compared with aluminum and zinc films. And corrosion resistance of Al-Mg film was increased after heat treatment.

Mineral carbonation is a technology for permanently storing carbon dioxide by reacting with metal oxides containing calcium and magnesium. In this study, we used sea water and alkaline industrial by-product such as paper sludge ash (PSA) for the storage of carbon dioxide through direct carbonation. We found the optimum conditions of both sea water content (mixing ratio of sea water and PSA) and reaction time required in the direct carbonation through various experiments using sea water and PSA. In addition, we compared the amounts of carbon dioxide storage with the cases when sea water and ultra-pure water were separately used as solvents in the direct carbonation with PSA. The amount of carbon dioxide storage was calculated by using both solid weight increase through the carbonation reaction and the contents of carbonate salts from thermal gravimetric analysis. PSA particle used in this study contained 67.2% of calcium. The optimum sea water content and reaction time in the carbonation reaction using sea water and PSA were 5 mL/g and 2 hours, respectively, under the conditions of 0.05 L/min flow rate of carbon dioxide injected at $25^{\circ}C$ and 1 atm. The amounts of carbon dioxide stored when sea water and ultra-pure water were separately used as solvents in the direct carbonation with PSA were 113 and $101kg\;CO_2/(ton\;PSA)$, respectively. The solid obtained through the carbonation reaction using sea water and PSA was composed of mainly calcium carbonate in the form of calcite and a small amount of magnesium carbonate. The solid obtained by using ultra-pure water, also, was found to be carbonate salt in the form of calcite.
MgB$_2$ and FeTi composites was prepared to study the effect of FeTi particles on superconductivity of MgB$_2$. The sample, which had contained magnesium, boron and FeTi particles, was synthesized by the Commercial Stainless Steel Tube Enveloping Technique(COSSET) at 92$0^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours. The structure and properties of the sample was investigated by XRD, SEM, and SQUID magnetometer. It was found that there was a little change of T$_{c}$ compared with pure MgB$_2$ superconductor in spite of high percentage of FeTi particles, and there was no proof of structure change of MgB$_2$ superconductor due to FeTi particles. But the high porosity which was appeared in the pure MgB$_2$ was disappeared in the composites. We conclude that FeTi particles do not influence the superconductivity of MgB$_2$ and it is expected that fe-Ti material system will be a good material for a tube of the PIT process and for a substrate of the film.m.

Pure $MgH_2$ was milled under a hydrogen atmosphere (reactive mechanical grinding, RMG). The hydrogen storage properties of the prepared samples were studied at a relatively low temperature of 423 K and were compared with those of pure Mg. The hydriding rate of the Mg was extremely low (0.0008 wt% H/min at n = 4), and the $MgH_2$ after RMG had higher hydriding rates than that of Mg at 423 K under 12 bar $H_2$. The initial hydriding rate of $MgH_2$ after RMG at 423 K under 12 bar $H_2$ was the highest (0.08 wt% H/min) at n = 2. At n = 2, the $MgH_2$ after RMG absorbed 0.39 wt% H for 5 min, and 1.21 wt% H for 60 min at 423K under 12 bar $H_2$. At 573 K under 12 bar $H_2$, the $MgH_2$ after RMG absorbed 4.86 wt% H for 5 min, and 5.52 wt% H for 60 min at n = 2. At 573 K and 423 K under 1.0 bar $H_2$, the $MgH_2$ after RMG and the Mg did not release hydrogen. The decrease in particle size and creation of defects by reactive mechanical grinding are believed to have led to the increase in the hydriding rate of the $MgH_2$ after RMG at a relatively low temperature of 423 K.

In this paper, we have developed a simple, new and economical carbonation method to synthesize a pure form of aragonite needles using dolomite raw materials. The obtained aragonite Precipitated Calcium Carbonate (PCC) was characterized by XRD and SEM, for the measurement of morphology, particle size, and aspect ratio (ratio of length to diameter of the particles). The synthesis of aragonite PCC involves two steps. At first, after calcinated dolomite fine powder was dissolved in water for hydration, the hydrated solution was mixed with aqueous solution of magnesium chloride at $80^{\circ}C$, and then $CO_2$ was bubbled into the suspension for 3 h to produce aragonite PCC. Finally, aragonite type precipitated calcium carbonate can be synthesized from natural dolomite via a simple carbonation process, yielding product with average particle size of $30-40{\mu}m$.

Phase pure barium magnesium tantalate $Ba(Mg_{1/3}Ta_{2/3})O_3$(BMT) nanopowders were synthesized at temperature as low as $220^{\circ}C$ through glycothermal reaction by using $Ba(OH)_2{\cdot}8H_2O$, $Mg(NO_3){\cdot}6H_2O$, and $TaCl_5$ as precursors and 1,4-butandiol as solvent. XRD, SEM, and TGA data support that glycothermal processing method provides a simple low temperature route for producing fine grained BMT nanopowders without alkaline mineralizers. BMT nanopowders synthesized at $220^{\circ}C$ showed more homogenous with rounded morphologies.
The extraction of metallic pure vanadium powder from raw oxide has been tried by Mg-reduction. In first stage, $V_2O_5$ powders as initial raw material was reduced by hydrogen gas into $V_2O_3$ phase. $V_2O_3$ powder was reduced in next stage by magnesium gas at 1,073K for 24 hours. After reduction reaction, the MgO component mixed with reduced vanadium powder were dissolved and removed fully in 10% HCl solution for 5 hours at room temperature. The oxygen content and particle size of finally produced vanadium powders were 0.84 wt% and 1 ${\mu}m$, respectively
