  • This paper proposes the FMEA-based model to avoid backdoor transactions when purchasers select suppliers for products and services. In the model, backdoor transactions consist of two categories: backdoor selling and maverick buying. Both of which influence negative effects on cost savings due to not only uncompetitive advantage but also unusable purchasing leverage by unethical and misbehavior of purchase requestors. For the risk evaluation based on FMEA, three and five risk types of backdoor selling and maverick buying are identified respectively. Current risk priority numbers(RPN) based on those risk types are calculated by three categories: occurrence, detection and severity. Six risk mitigation strategies and fourteen mitigation tactics are identified to improve current RPN. In order to validate the model, questionnaires are collected from fifteen companies and statistically analyzed. The analysis result shows that the model reduces backdoor transaction risks and has no differences in reduction of backdoor transaction risks regardless of the type of purchasing organization units and existence of purchasing procedures in the organization.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of perceived risk and psychological distance on purchase intention when purchasing a gift. It focuses on social distances and temporal distances, and aims to identify the interactions between these psychological distances and perceived risk. Data were collected through experiments. Research design, data and methodology: The experiment was carried out through the design of 2 (perceived risk: high/low) × 2 (social distance: far / near) × 2 (temporal distance: far / near) between-subjects design. Participants were 241 undergraduates from two universities in Chungnam and Gangwon, and randomly assigned to one of eight groups. Results: It was confirmed that there is a difference in purchase intention according to the risk perceived by consumers when purchasing a gift. In particular, the difference in purchase intention based on the risk perceived by the buyer was found to be greater as the social distance between the gift giver and the recipient is shorter. In addition, it was confirmed that the intention to purchase a gift was simultaneously influenced by three factors: social distance, perceived risk, and time remaining to purchase a gift. In other words, when both temporal distance and social distance were short, the difference in purchase intention according to perceived risk was greatest. Conclusions: The purpose of this study was to examine how the relationship between perceived risk and purchase intention when purchasing a gift varies with psychological distance. This study found that the closer the relationship between the gift purchaser and the beneficiary and the shorter the time remaining before the gift purchase, the greater the difference in the willingness to purchase due to the perceptual risk. In practice, the results of this study can be used to establish sales promotion strategies for various gift products. Above all, the closer the relationship between the gift buyer and the person receiving the gift, the more differentially there should be a guarantee program that can reduce or eliminate the risk perceived by the buyer. There is also a need to use step-by-step product recommendation programs that can reduce perceptual risk depending on the time remaining until a particular season, such as graduation or Christmas.

The data were collected from a sample of 311 housewives in Seoul and Ulsan. A structural equation modelling technique was used to test the causal model. The results indicated that subjective knowledge was significantly associated with purchasing organic food. Objective knowledge, in contrast, was only indirectly associated with purchasing organic food, through increased subjective knowledge and risk perception towards purchasing organic food. Risk perception towards organic food had a direct positive and relatively strong relationship with purchasing organic food. Implications of the results and limitations of the study were discussed.

  • In traditional inventory models, purchase prices of raw materials are assumed to be fixed and have no effect on the optimal choice of inventory policies. However, when purchase prices fluctuate continuously over time, inventory costs are heavily affected by purchasing prices. Risk-averse inventory model decides order quantity and ordering time by considering not just purchase prices but also the risk from the discrepancy between estimated prices and realized prices. In this paper, we propose a myopic inventory policy which incorporates price risk into deciding ordering time and quantities. While the existing risk-averse model has no mechanism to reallocate inventories already purchased for a specific future period, the revised one reallocates initial inventories of each period to other future periods so that it can avoid purchasing raw materials at high prices. Experimental results demonstrate that the revised model outperforms the existing one in respect of total cost and variability.
