  • This study is based on crane fly specimens collected during more than 80 years, from 1937 through 2019, and are in collections maintained at the United States National Museum, Smithsonian Institution, Washington DC, USA; at Korea University collection, Seoul, South Korea, and the National Institute of Biological Resources, Incheon, South Korea. Three species belonging to genus Phylidorea Bigot, 1854 originally were described from North Korea and in total four species were known from the Peninsula. Phylidorea (Phylidorea) multidentata (Alexander, 1938) is a Korean endemic. We are adding P. (P.) melanommata (Alexander, 1921) to the list of Korean species, which was previously recorded from Japan and Far East of Russia. We present general information on genus and subgenera, redescriptions of species based on Korean specimens, illustrations of both sexes, elevation range, period of activity, habitat information, general distribution, and a distribution map for the Korean Peninsula (including North Korea) for each species.

  • Through previous studies, the central nervous system (CNS) was collected by dividing the scuttle fly into larval, pupa, and adult stages by developmental stage, and the morphological characteristics were observed. In situ hybridization (ISH) using the collected central nervous system, it was possible to confirm the location and extent of expression of the neurotransmitter corazonin (Crz) at each stage of development. In this study, paraffin specimens were prepared using central nervous system tissues of 3rd instar larval stage of scuttle fly, which had completed in situ hybridization, and general histochemical staining (hematoxylin-eosin, H-E) and special histochemical staining (luxol fast blue-cresyl violet) was performed to observe the histological and cytological morphology characteristics of corazonin neurons. As a result, a variety of nerve cell body existed between many myelin sheath. The corazonin neurons compose cortex of central nervous system with other neurons congregating in this tissue and show larger cell body relatively in neurohistochemical analysis.

  • CdR aminohydrolase activity in varying developmental stages of Drosophila melanogaster was studied in an attempt to correlate with ageing. The results obtained are as follows: 1. The catabolic pathway of CdR in Drosophila melanogaster seemed to be $CdR \\to UdR \\to U$. 2. The enzyme activity was demonstrated in the adults and no activity was observable in both larva and pupa. 3. The enzyme activity of the adult was found to be higher in older flies than in younger ones. 4. The results were of suggestive of a possibility that enzyme activity might be correlated with ageing and/or developmental stages of Drosophila melanogaster.

  • 1. The amounts of RNA and DNA were determined in the fall webworm, Hyphantria cunea Drury during the course of development from the egg to early adult stage. 2. The amounts of both nucleic acids were increased with the development of egg. 3. Both acids reached a maximum druing the stage of the 5th instar larva. 4. The amount of RNA was generally greater than that of DNA throughout the stages of development. 5. As the pupa developed, there was an increase in the amount of RNA and on the contrary, the amount of DNA decreased.

  • We investigated the effects of molting-hormone insecticide tebufenozide on D7 (the day of hatching from egg) larvae of the midge Chironomus riparius in growth developments. D7 instar larvae were exposed test concentrations were chosen control, 10${\mu}g \;L^{-1}$, 30${\mu}g \;L^{-1}$, 60${\mu}g \;L^{-1}$ and 100${\mu}g \;L^{-1}$ of tebufenozide. In general, dead larvae showed 16% on the next day after insecticide treatments (D12), and observed 44% from D12 to D16 in this exposed days. Dead larvae of C. riparius was abruptly increased on D12 and also continuously increased along the days in 10${\mu}g \;L^{-1}$ treatments. The converged day was from D12 to D16 at move 30${\mu}g \;L^{-1}$ treatments in this study. Therefore, dead larvae obviously increased along these concentrations of tebufenozide. In control condition,78% of the test individuals have grown the pupae. But the larvae have developed the pupa stage from 5% to 17% of the test organism in 10${\mu}g \;L^{-1}$ and 30${\mu}g \;L^{-1}$ treatments. And 75% of the test individuals was arrived the adult through the molting process in control condition. While the other condition was rarely observed the adult. Usually, the emerged period of the test individuals was gathered the D26-D29 in control. The dead pupa showed from D19 to D20 in 30${\mu}g \;L^{-1}$ treatments, D32 in control and D33 in 10${\mu}g \;L^{-1}$ treatments. The observed periods of dead pupa were D32-D34 in control and D33-D37 in 10${\mu}g \;L^{-1}$ treatments. Consequently, due to molting hormone disruption, development of midge was postponed relatively low concentration such as 10 treatments of tebufenozide.

Species of the leaf rollers attacking the bamboo trees in Chonnam area were Microstega jessica (Butler) and Sinibotys evenoralis (Walker). Among these species, M. jessica (B.) and S. evenoralis (W.) were observed in Damyang but S. evenoralis (W.) alone was found in Naju and Hwasoon. Among the 4 host plant species observed, Phyllostachys nigra var. henonis S., and P. nigra M. were first recorded as host plants of M. jessica (B.), and P. nigra var. henonis (S.) as host plant of S. evenoralis (W.). The occurrence of the M. jessica (B). was once a year with the peak about late May, whereas the occurrence of S. evenoralis (W.) was 2 times a year and the peaks were early June and mid-July, respectively. The average periods of each stage of M. jessica (B.) were 8 days for egg, 293 days for larva, 16 days for pupa, and the longevity of the adult was 12 days for females and 9 days for males. The average periods of each stage of S. evenoralis (W.) were in 1st generation, 11 days for egg, 28 days for larva, 12 days for pupa, and the longevity of the adults was 18 days for females and 15 days for males; and 2nd generation was 7 days for egg, 261 days for larva, 20 days for pupa, and the longevity of the adults was 11 days for females and 10 days for males. The time of most adult emergence of M. jessica (B.) was from 6 p.m. to 4 a.m. and the peak was 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. M. jessica (B,) overwintered as 6th instals in Bamboo shoot sheath but S. evenoralis (W.) overwintered as $1st{\sim}2nd$ instals on the tree leaves of Bamboo. The percentage of damaged leaves with different heights of Bamboo trees were 67.1% at upper portion, 19.0% at middle portion, 14.0% at lower portion. The percentage of damaged loaves with different Bamboo species was 57.0% on P. nigra var. henonis S., 36.5% on P. bambusoides S. et Z., 14.5% on P. pubescens M.. It was showed highly significant negative correlation between percentage of damaged bamboo leaves an tree growth stages.($r=-0.739^{**}$)

  • This study was performed to investigate the immature development period, fecundity, emergence rate and sex ratio of Sclerodermus harmandi against different host insects, Monochamus alternatus, M. saltuarius and Psacothea hilaris. Full grown larvae and pupae of host insects were provided with foods. The mean larval period of S. harmandi female was $29.2{\pm}0.93\;and\;25.1{\pm}0.47$ days in larvae and pupae of M. alternatus, $27.1{\pm}0.41\;and\;26.0{\pm}0.69$ days in M. saltuarius, and $26.3{\pm}0.38\;and\;31.2{\pm}0.24$ days in P. hilaris, respectively. S. hilaris adults were emerged at $12.9{\pm}0.2$ days in female and $11.9{\pm}0.2$ days in male after pupation when hosted M. alternatus pupa. Development period in male showed shorter one day than in female. Success rate of oviposition against different hosts was higher as 98.6 and 97.5% on full grown larva and pupa of M saltuarius. Emergence rate was higher as 90.1 and 87.3% on M. saltuarius larvae and pupae. Sex ratio of emerged S. harmandi adults was approximately 10:1 (Female : Male), females showed higher emergence rate than males. The period until first oviposition after emergence in S. harmandi female was the shortest in $4.6{\pm}0.1$ days on M. saltuarius pupa. When three females of S. harmandi were inoculated on M. saltuarius larva, the number of laid eggs was the highest $62.7{\pm}2.5$ per female.

  • This study was performed to investigate the biological characteristics of the brown lacewing Micromus angulatus (Stephens) at four different temperatures (15, 20, 25, and $30^{\circ}C$) and $70{\pm}10%$ relative humidity under a photoperiodic regime of 16:8(L:D) h. The developmental threshold and effective accumulative temperature from egg to pupa for M. angulatus were $9.6^{\circ}C$ and 270.3 day-degrees, respectively. The developmental period of egg, larva, and pupa at $25^{\circ}C$ was 4.4, 5.5, and 6.9 days. respectively. The longevity of an adult female M. angulatus was 34.9 days. The oviposition period for M. angulatus was 28.7 days, in which it laid a total number of 515.2 eggs during its life span. The maximum number of eggs laid by a female in a day was 54.8. Daily consumption by M. angulatus at $25^{\circ}C$ was 18.9 $1^{st}$ instars, 47.2 $2^{nd}$ instars, 57.7 $3^{rd}$ instars, and 91.0 adults of the glasshouse potato aphid, Aulacorthum solani. Therefore, M. angulatus could be a promising biological control agent against aphids.

  • The study was conducted to investigate the developmental periods and effect of several insecticides on Hemiptarsenus sp., ectoparasitoid of Liriomyza trifolii. The mean length and width of egg were 0.5mm and 0.1mm. The mean length of larva, pupae, abult female, and abult male were 1.9mm, 2.0mm, 2.2mm, and 1.8mm, respectively. Developmental periods of Hemiptarsenus sp. from egg to larva at 15, 20, 25, $30^{\circ}C$ were 16.9, 8.8, 5.9, and 4.5 days, and those of pupa were 20.7, 9.7, 5.6, and 3.4 days, respectively. Based on these results, developmental threshold temperatures and effective temperatures were $9.5^{\circ}C$, 91.5 degree-days in egg-larval stage, $10.9^{\circ}C$, 142.3 degree-days in pupal stage. When several insecticides were evaluated to Hemiptarsenus sp. at the recommended concentrations, B.t WP, diflubenzuron WP, and cyromazin were negligiblly effective all life stages. Fipronil SC, cartap SP, spinosad GW were less toxic to larva and pupa, but highly toxic to adults. Abamectin EC was less toxic to all life stages, but inhibited oviposition of 50% more to Hemiptarsenus sp. female.
