  • Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) consists of a driving pulley and a driven pulley joined by rubber V-belt. Each pulley consists of a fixed flange and a movable flange. The main advantages of the U with V-belt, which has been Popular in Asia, are a simple mechanism less maintenance and low cost. One of the important factors which have an influence on the performance of the CVT is change of axial distance. Base on an experiment the effects of transfer torque and speed ratio of both driving pulley and driven pulley during the alteration of axial distance were studied.

  • A V belt pulley is widely used in automotive industry. More than tow pulleys in one automobile are used, such items as crankshaft, water pump, air-con compressor and power steering pump. Although the shape and usage of pulleys are very simple, the design evaluation of a pulley design is difficult because the load conditions and the installation environment are complicated. So, we formulated the design evaluation for the V belt pulley by using CAE system, which enables to develop a design automation system. By using this system, an engineer can evaluate a pulley design easily without any painstaking effort, such as consideration of the complicated loads and CAE activities. Also the system helps to accumulate the design experience of a company, which guides the optimum design based on experience.

  • We evaluated biceps pulley as a stabilizing sling for the long head of biceps tendon in the rotator interval. We present 3 cases of detached biceps pulley which impinges on posterosuperior glenoid labrum in the position of late cocking. Pulley impingement related to anterior shoulder instability was relieved after Bankart repair. In another two cases, impingement symptoms were disappeared after resection of the detached biceps pulley.

  • The inner pulley is an automobile component used as air conditioner clutch assembly. In cold forging of inner pulley, the design requirements are to keep the same height of the inner rib and outer one, and to make uniform the hardness distribution in the forged product. In industry, the design of forging processes is performed based on experience-oriented technology, that is, designers experience and expensive trial and error. Using the rigid-plastic finite element simulations. we design the optimal process conditions, which has a preforming operation. Also the final product configuration of forging has to be designed again in view of metal flow involved in the operation, derived from the finite element simulations. The forged pulley is investigated by checking the hardness distribution and it is noted that distribution has improved to be even and high enough for industrial application.

  • Internal and external defects of an inner pulley for automobile air conditioner are investigated in this study. Inner pulley is a part of compressor clutch assembly of automobile air conditioner. In cold forging of inner pulley, the design requirement are to keep the same height of the inner rib and outer one and to make uniform distribution of hardness in the forged product. At the end of the forging of inner pulley, the piping defect as an external defect begins to form at the back center of the billet. The internal crack as an internal defect also occur at the adiabatic shear band which usually has maximum ductile fracture value. It is important to predict when the internal and external defects occur during the deformation process, in order to minimize the amount of discard that is generated. The finite element simulations are applied to analyze the defects. The validity of the computational results are examined by experiments. These computational results are in good agreement with the experimental ones.

Study on the Impact Coefficient of the Lifting System (조금구의 충격계수에 관한 연구)

  • In resent the weight of structure is heavier and bigger than before. Engineers use many heavy equipments to erect buildings and bridges. The heavy equipment is very useful to lift any weight. But most engineers do not know the impact of the weight when the equipment lifts the weight. In this study one researched into the impact of the weight in the crane work which lifts the weight in the construction site. Also along the number of pulley sheave the impact of the weight was researched. From the impact field test the impact coefficient of a single pulley sheave crane was 0.65 and the four pulley sheaves crane was 0.13. The result shows that the impact coefficient of a single pulley crane is more than 5 time of the impact coefficient of the four pulley sheaves crane and that engineers must consider the impact effect of the crane work in the construction site.

  • Few articles have been written about the flexor tendon sheath ganglion in the finger, especially, between A1 pulley and A2 pulley. We report on rare cases of flexor tendon sheath ganglion with one symptomatic and two asymptomatic. All masses were evaluated using real-time ultrasonography and well-defined anechoic cystic lesions with posterior enhancement were observed. A 17-year-old female had a small mass at the 4th metacarpophalageal joint of her right hand, with pain and triggering. The patient underwent simple excision and a ganglion measuring $1.0{\times}0.8$ cm in size was derived from Camper's chiasm, between A1 pulley and A2 pulley. In two asymptomatic cases, ganglia measuring less than 0.5 cm in size observed. Based on our experience, real-time ultrasonography would be an excellent diagnostic modality in determining the treatment method in flexor tendon sheath ganglia, and surgical excision is recommended in symptomatic, especially triggering patients.

Fracture Mechanics Analysis of the Weldment in Pulley for Belt Conveyor (컨베이어용 풀리의 용접부위에 관한 파괴역학 설계기술 개발)

  • The drive pulley, which is employed for loading and unloading raw materials in a steel mill, is usually manufactured by use of various welding processes. In this study the weldment in the pulley, in which TIG and $CO_2$ welding processes are used, has been analyzed from view point of fracture mechanics. Fracture toughness tests have been performed according to ASTM E813. A servo-hydraulic testing machine (10kN) has been employed. Also the crack propagation tests (Mode I) have been performed with compact tension specimen in compliance with ASTM E647. To predict the critical crack size in the weldment, finite element stress analysis for the drive pulley under real operating conditions have been performed. In addition, the residual stresses at the weldment and in heat-affected zone have been obtained by hole drilling method. The planar critical crack size have been predicted for the drive pulley by considering the stress analysis results and the residual stresses due to welding process. For the drive pulley considered in this study, it has been concluded that the most important factor in determining the critical crack size is the welding residual stress in the transverse direction. Also the effect of stress concentration at the root of the weldment have been noticeable. For the planar crack, the fatigue crack growth life from an initial crack size of 2mm to the critical crack size obtained as in the above have been predicted. The predicted lives were between 55, 900 and 72, 000 cycles depending on the shape of the elliptical crack. The predicted lives were in fairly good agreement for the drive pulley considered in this study.

  • This paper contributes to the understanding of the effect of pulley on the performance of the vortex turbine in free water surface. The experimental work was to analyze the rotation, voltage and current of the turbine due to physical factors (vortex height, velocity, effective head, etc.) at flow rates ranging from 0.0069 to 0.0077 m3/s in the inlet channel. As a result, the experimental values showed that voltage, current and rotational speed of the vortex turbine decreased with increasing the pulley ratio regardless of the blade type. The efficiency of straight blade and twisted blade was 52 % at the gear ratio of 0.45, whereas the efficiency of small twisted blade was 54 % at the pulley ratio of 0.21. The highest amount of the energy generated by the water free vortex turbine occurred within a pulley ratio of 0.5. The efficiency of this vortex turbine was observed at 0.2 ~ 58 % depending on the pulley ratio.
