  • This study explores the development strategies, impact, and limitations of public library makerspaces through active case studies. By examining related literature reviews, this study analyzes principles, objectives, programs, services, and strategies of public library makerspaces. Survey results from library staff and makerspace program participants show that both groups perceived the value and the effects of makerspaces positively; however, they suggested the need for greater program variety and accessibility. Additionally, this study evaluates makerspace programs through in-depth interviews with makerspace staff. Interview results raise diverse issues, including the need to further explore the justifications for and values of public library makerspaces, stable funding strategies, and phase-by-phase operating guidelines.

  • Korea has pursued an aggressive policy of inviting more foreign-born students to its universities since the late 1990s in the wake of the globalization of education markets and its changing demographic structure. While increasingly more students from Asia come to Korea for study, more than half of the graduates return home upon graduation. Given the issues of brain drain, brain circulation, and knowledge transfer that are raised by such a high return rate, this paper examines the factors that frame the foreign students' decision on their post-graduation careers. By analyzing survey data, we report that Asian students majoring in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) are more likely to return than non-STEM majors. This suggests that Korea's aggressive policies of inviting foreign-born students have contributed to brain circulation and knowledge transfer between Korea and the other Asian countries. We also find that scholarships from Korean sources and positive attitudes toward Korean culture and life increase their inclination to stay in the country upon graduation. These findings, however, raise more questions than answers, since it becomes obvious that their post-graduation decisions are highly affected by what Korea as a society provides.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of a happiness choice program based on reality therapy on subjective well-being and interpersonal relations in nursing students. Methods: A nonequivalent control group pre-posttest design was used. The participants were 45 nursing students, 22 in the experimental group, and 23 in the control group. They were from 2 different colleges of nursing located in 2 regions. The happiness choice program based on reality therapy was held 6 times over 6 weeks, taking 120 minutes per session. Nursing students' subjective well-being and interpersonal relations were measured. SPSS 18.0 using the ${\chi}^2$-test, t-test, and paired t-test were used in data analysis. Results: Nursing students in the experimental group showed significantly higher life satisfaction (t=3.81, p<.001), positive emotion (t=2.09, p=.042), and interpersonal relations (t=4.11, p<.001), while significantly lower negative emotion (t=-2.59, p=.013). Conclusion: The findings of this study suggest that a happiness choice program based on reality therapy could be a useful intervention for improving subjective well-being and interpersonal relations of nursing students.

Method: This study used a nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design. Subjects (n=126) were divided into an experimental group (n=64) that received the brain respiration program two times a week for 8 weeks, and control group (n=62), Data was analyzed using paired t-test and, Pearson correlation coefficient. Results: There was no significant group difference in decreased test anxiety between the two groups (t=1.726. p=.087), but the experimental group displayed a significant decrease in depression (t=2.882, p=.005). Test anxiety and depression was significantly difference by the group (F=5.449, p=021; F=21.008, p=<.001). Significant positive correlations were revealed between worry, and emotional and cognitive factors in test anxiety. Conclusions: Use of a brain respiration program can reduce test anxiety and depression in nursing students.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of an exercise program on physical fitness, obesity indices, and blood lipids in cases of non-obese and obese women. Method: Data was collected from May, 2006 to November, 2006 in a public health center. All Subjects(37 women) participated in an exercise program that consisted of Latin dance, muscular strength training, and dumbbell exercises. Thirty-seven women were divided into two groups(16 non-obese women and 21 obese women) by %body fat. After 8 weeks, the effects of treatment were compared between pre-test and post-test in each group. Results: Physical fitness(abdominal muscle strength, muscle endurance, flexibility, agility, balance) was significantly different between the pre-test and post-test in the non-obese and obese group. Obesity indices(body weight, BMI) was significantly different in obese women after the 8-week exercise program. There was no decrease of blood lipids in either group. Conclusion: These findings indicate that an exercise program could be an effective nursing intervention to increase physical fitness in non-obese and obese women and to decrease obesity indices(body weight, BMI) in obese women.

  • Public library programs serve a cultural function and are a tool for community interaction. Recently, there has been an increase in the number of websites that integrate the programs of various institutions, but there is no set framework to describe the programs. Therefore, in order to prepare a framework for program information, we conducted a content analysis of Jeongdok Library programs as an example. Using MAXQDA, a content analysis tool, category codes for type, topic, special classification, and target audience were derived. Based on this, we analyzed the characteristics of the Jeongdok library programs as follows. In terms of type, there are many programs such as classes and lectures, but fewer programs related to tours, performances and screenings, and operational experiences. In terms of topic matter, programs related to reading and the arts were dominant, while programs related to book curation, awards, and the environment were less common. In terms of target audience, the most common programs were for adults, with fewer programs for high school students, middle school students, and library staff. The framework of Jeongdok library program can be used not only to classify the programs currently operated by other public libraries, but also to develop a service platform for public library programs in Korea.
