The market of domestic Power Plant Generator Protection and Control System (GPCS) is narrow and required the high reliability, and technology. So, it is still operated as turn-key. In recent years, digital relays has evolved into IED can perform the control and monitoring functions without central monitoring based on IEC61850 international standards communications, and attention for advancement of smart grid and ECMS has been increased in South Korea. The increasing attention on multi-function IED, DGPS(digital generator protection system), for internal fault protection of large generator results in starting a national project in South Korea, the IED prototype development for next-generation power units. The voltage restrained overcurrent relay have been used as back-up overcurrent protection for generators. In this paper, voltage restrained overcurrent relay is one of the back-up protective factors in generator protection IED was presented. For evaluation performance of the voltage restrained overcurrent relay, the data of ATPDraw5.7p4 modeling was used.

This paper focuses on the reverse blocking busbar protection scheme with aim to improve the speed of its operation and at the same time to increase operational reliability, flexibility and stability of the protection during external and internal faults by implementation of the extended functionality provided by the IEC61850 standard-based protective Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs). The practical implementation of the scheme by the use of IEC 61850 standard communication protocol is investigated. The proposed scheme is designed for a radial type of a distribution network and is modeled and simulated in the DigSILENT software environment for various faults on the busbar and its outgoing feeders. A laboratory test bench is built using three ABB IEDs 670 series that are compliant with the IEC 61850 standard, CMC 356 Omicron test injection device, PC, MOXA switch, and a DC power supplier. Two types of the reverse blocking signals between the IEDs in the test bench are considered: hard wired and Ethernet communication by using IEC 61850 standard GOOSE messages. Comparative experimental study of the operational trip response speeds of the two implementations for various traffic conditions of the communication network shows that the performance of the protection scheme for the case of Ethernet IEC 61850 standard-based communication is better.

This paper investigates the spectrum hole utilization of cooperative schemes for the two-way relaying model in order to improve the utilization efficiency of limited spectrum holes in cognitive radio networks with imperfect spectrum sensing. We propose two specific bidirectional secondary data transmission (BSDT) schemes with two-step and three-step two-way relaying models, i.e., two-BSDT and three-BSDT schemes, where the spectrum sensing and the secondary data transmission are jointly designed. In the proposed cooperative schemes, the best two-way relay channel between two secondary users is selected from a group of secondary users serving as cognitive relays and assists the bi-directional communication between the two secondary users without a direct link. The closed-form asymptotic expressions for outage probabilities of the two schemes are derived with a primary user protection constraint over Rayleigh fading channels. Based on the derived outage probabilities, the spectrum hole utilization is calculated to evaluate the percentage of spectrum holes used by the two secondary users for their successful information exchange without channel outage. Numerical results show that the spectrum hole utilization depends on the spectrum sensing overhead and the channel gain from a primary user to secondary users. Additionally, we compare the spectrum hole utilization of the two schemes as the varying of secondary signal to noise ratio, the number of cognitive relays, and symmetric and asymmetric channels.
The digital substation automation system has contributed hugely to increasing the stability of power systems by providing not only protection and control of power systems but diagnostic features alongside them. Digital substation automation systems in the scale of substations consist of integrated operation systems and intelligent electronic devices. The main intelligent electronic devices currently in use are digital protection relays and the bay controllers in Gas insulated switchgears. Proficiently accomplishing the coordination of protection within the power system as a means of ensuring reliability and contriving for the stability of power supply through connection of function, the application of bay controllers is crucial, which collectively manage the protection relay at the bay level in order to achieve both. In this research, the bay controllers to be used in high-voltage Gas insulated switchgear has been localized, and in particular, the logic function and editor required in order to minimize the complicated hardware-like cable connections in the local panel have been developed. In addition, to ensure the strength and reliability of the bay controller hardware developed herein, the type tests from KERI have been successfully completed.
The setting of protective relays, which is critical to the power system security and reliability, requires a huge volume of data processing and repetitive calculation. Since it has been performed by relay engineers manually, it is vulnerable to human errors, its computerization has been pursued, in which the efficient management of the data is the key to the success. The database for power system protection must accommodate not only the power system network data but also a variety of protective devices. Also its information should be able to be viewed and updated with easy by operators and by computer programs. This paper describes several existing database designs for power system protection, their advantages and disadvantages. Also this paper has identified the required function and designed the database for the KEPCO power system data structure for the benefit of the relay setting process, etc..

This paper presents solutions for fault detection and diagnosis of two-level, three phase voltage-source inverter (VSI) topologies with IGBT devices. The proposed solutions combine redundant standby VSI structures and contactors (or relays) to improve the fault-tolerant capabilities of power electronics in applications with safety requirements. The suitable combination of these elements gives the inverter the ability to maintain energy processing in the occurrence of several failure modes, including short-circuit in IGBT devices, thus extending its reliability and availability. A survey of previously developed fault-tolerant VSI structures and several aspects of failure modes, detection and isolation mechanisms within VSI is first discussed. Hardware solutions for the protection of power semiconductors with fault detection and diagnosis mechanisms are then proposed to provide conditions to isolate and replace damaged power devices (or branches) in real time. Experimental results from a prototype are included to validate the proposed solutions.
This paper describes the current- based compact digital motor protective relay for low and high voltage induction motors, which are widely used in industrial and commercial power systems. The existing protective relays for motor protection had only overload, short circuit, reverse phase, open circuit and grounding protective elements, and measurement, start/stop control function. But in present day, for automation system, various functions are required, especially motor management and sequence control function and more. To meet these requirements, we developed an economic current-based compact digital motor protective relay which had various function to control, manage and monitor the induction motor.
When faults occur in transmission lines, the classification of faults is very important. If the fault is HIF(High Impedance Fault), it cannot be detected or removed by conventional overcurrent relays (OCRs), and results in fire hazards and causes damages in electrical equipment or personal threat. The fast discrimination of fault needs to effective protection and treatment and is important problem for power system protection. This paper propolsed the fault detection and discrimination algorithm for LIFs(Low Impedance Faults) and HIFs(High Impedance Faults). This algorithm uses artificial neural networks and variation of 3-phase maximum currents per period while faults. A double lines-to-ground and line-to-line faults can be detected using Neural Network. Also, the other faults can be detected using the value of variation of maximum current. Test results show that the proposed algorithms discriminate LIFs and HIFs accurately within a half cycle.
This paper proposes a percentage current differential relaying algorithm for bus protection using an advanced compensation algorithm of the secondary current of CTs. A percentage current differential relaying algorithm may maloperate in case of external faults with CT saturation. Thus, it needs an additional method to cope with CT saturation. The advanced compensation algorithm is unaffected by a remanent flux. The proposed relaying algorithm does not need any additional methods for CT saturation and is unaffected by the remanent flux and has the wide operating zone of current differential relays.
Most conventional protection relays are based on processing information in the spectrum that is close to or at power frequency. It is, however, widely known that faults on transmission lines produce frequency components of a wide range In this respect, this paper describes the basis of a Protection technique for transmission lines which utilises high-frequency components. Fault-generated signals caused by post-fault and the signal derived from stack tuner is connected to the coupling capacitor of CVT. Digital signal processing is then applied to the captured information to determine whether the fault is inside or outside the Protected zone, and to discriminate the fault type on transmission line.
