  • Runge-Kutta-Nystr$\"{o}$m (RKN) methods provide a popular way to solve the initial value problem (IVP) for a system of ordinary differential equations (ODEs). Users of software are typically asked to specify a tolerance ${\delta}$, that indicates in somewhat vague sense, the level of accuracy required. It is clearly important to understand the precise effect of changing ${\delta}$, and to derive the strongest possible results about the behaviour of the global error that will not have regular behaviour unless an appropriate stepsize selection formula and standard error control policy are used. Faced with this situation sufficient conditions on an algorithm that guarantee such behaviour for the global error to be asympotatically linear in ${\delta}$ as ${\delta}{\rightarrow}0$, that were first derived by Stetter. Here we extend the analysis to cover a certain class of ODEs with low-order derivative discontinuities, and the class of ODEs with constant delays. We show that standard error control techniques will be successful if discontinuities are handled correctly and delay terms are calculated with sufficient accurate interpolants. It is perhaps surprising that several delay ODE algorithms that have been proposed do not use sufficiently accurate interpolants to guarantee asymptotic proportionality. Our theoretical results are illustrated numerically.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze characteristics of problem solving process with proportional or compensational reasoning of the elementary school students. For this study, 85th grade students were selected and tested with Science Reasoning Task, information processing ability test and proportional and compensational reasoning tasks. This study revealed that students in mid concrete stage could solve the proportionality task and easy compensation task. But, most of the students could not solve difficult compensation task. And as the students got higher score in information processing test, it took them less time to solve the problem. The types of strategy used in solving proportional and compensational problem were categorized as the factor of change, building-up and the cross-product. Most of the students failed in problem solving used incorrect schema knowledge, procedure knowledge and strategy knowledge. Many students tended to use proportionality strategy to solve the difficult compensation task. Result of this study suggested that various task included different structure and the same schema knowledge can be effective for the advancement of students' proportional and compensational reasoning ability.

  • In this paper we analyze the effect of nonlinear gain on laser modulation characteristics applying a small-signal analysis to the rate equation which includes a nonlinear gain term. Also we analyze the resonance frequency and the damping factor which determine laser modulation characteristics, define K factor which is the proportionality factor between resonance frequency and damping factor, and conclude that the decrease in K factor is due to increases in differential gain and no correlation between K factor and nonlinear gain is identified.

  • We measured the linewidth (FWHM) changes of the PQR laser against the diameter of the devices and the injection currents. We report the linewidth narrowing with increasing the PQR currents. A rough estimate of the line width behavior shows an inverse proportionality to the cavity length. The spectrum of $\frac{3}{4}$ circle cavity PQR laser is reported for the first time as well. The spectrum looks slightly different from that of the full circle device due to the structural distortion.

  • In this paper, a DLC method is suggested for linear feedback systems to improve the tracking performance when the task of the system is repetitive. DLC can generate the desired control input directly from the previously teamed control inputs corresponding to other output trajectories. It is assumed that all outputs considered in this paper have some relations called "proportionality. " To show the validity and tracking performance of the proposed method, some simulation are performed for the tracking control of a linear system with a PI controller.

  • The author has synchronously recorded average electromyographic activities of temporalis anteriors and masseter muscles and the maximum bite force on the mandibular first molar on the prferred chewing side. These activities were recorded in order to study the EMG activity pattern of the working side and the balancing side to maximum bete force and functioning state of muscle in 30 patients with TMD and in 30 healthy subjects as controls. The results were as follows : 1. The maximum bite force on the mandibular first molar on the preferred chewing side was 20.63kg in TMD patients and 53.30kg in the healthy subjects(p<0.01). The maximum bite force in TMD patients was 38.7% of the healthy subjects. 2. The average electromyographic activities of temporalis anterioris and masseter muscles on the working side and the balancing side during maximum bite force were lower in TMD patients than in the healthy subjects(p<0.01). The average electromyographic activities of each muscle in TMD patients were 61.0%-62.8% of the healthy subjects. 3. The proportionalities of average electromyographic activities of temporalis anteriors and masseter muscles on the working side and the balancing side to maximum bite force were greater in TMD patients than in the healthy subjects(p<0.01). 4. Between the working side and the balancing side, the proportionality of average electromyographic activity of temporalis anterior to maximum bite force on the working healthy subjects (p<0.01). The proportionality of average electromyographic activity of working side and the balancing side in both groups (p<0.05).

  • This study focuses on understanding proportionality, in particular, what constitutes relational understanding of a:b=c:d, which is called proportional expression. The meanings of a:b=c:d are analyzed and some suggestions are offered for improving the teaching and learning of it. The equation a:b=c:d has three different meanings. First, it represents two different structures in one proportional situation. Second, it represents a common structure in two different proportional situations. Finally, it represents a number or a quantity underlying in different proportional situations. It is important to choose and use a unit flexibly to understand the first and the second meanings of a:b=c:d, Double strip diagram and double number line are useful to visualize the meanings of a:b=c:d. In addition, what a number or a quantity in the third meaning of a:b=c:d refers to in proportional situations should be emphasized in teaching and learning of a:b=c:d.

  • Background: This study was aimed to identify the safety signals of metoclopramide in Korea Adverse Event Reporting System (KAERS) database by proportionality analysis methods. Methods: The study was conducted using Korea Institute of Drug Safety and Risk Management-Korea Adverse Event Reporting System Database (KIDS-KD) reported from January 2013 to December 2017 through KAERS. Signals of metoclopramide that satisfied the data-mining indices of proportional reporting ratio (PRR), reporting odds ratio (ROR) and information component (IC) were defined. The detected signals were checked whether they included in drug labels in the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS), U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Micromedex®. Results: A total number of drug AE reports associated with all drugs of data in this study was 2,665,429. Among them, the number of AE reports associated with metoclopramide was 22,583. Forty-two meaningful signals of metoclopramide were detected that satisfied with the criteria of data-mining indicies. Especially neurological signals including extrapyramidal reactions, represented in the safety letter of regulatory agencies were identified in this study. Conclusion: Neurological signals of metoclopramide including extrapyramidal reactions were detected. It is believed that this search for signals can contribute to ensuring safety in the use of metoclopramide.

  • The effect of electric fields on the propagation speed of tribrachial flames has been investigated in a coflow jet by observing the transient flame propagation behavior after ignition. Without having electric fields, the propagation speed of tribrachial flame edges showed a typical behavior by having an inverse proportionality to the mixture fraction gradient at the flame edge. The behavior of flame propagation with the electric fields was investigated by applying high voltage to the central fuel nozzle and the enhancement of propagation speed has been observed by varying the applied voltage and frequency for AC electric fields. The propagation speed of tribrachial flame was also investigated by applying negative and positive DC voltages to the nozzle and similar improvements of the propagation speed were also observed. The propagation speeds of tribrachial flames in both the AC and DC electric fields were correlated well with the electric field intensity, defined by the electric voltage divided by the distance between the nozzle electrode and the edge of tribrachial flames.
