In vitro Evaluation of Antidermatophytic Activity of Egyptian Bee Propolis in Combination with Plant Essential Oils in Sheep Hoof Plate: An Experimental Model

  • Bee propolis ethanolic extract with some plant essential oils was investigated for its antidermatophytic properties. The tested plant essential oils included jasmine, clove, lemon, Arabian jasmine, mint, rosa, olive and basil. The antidermatophytic activity has been compared to Naftifine-HCl and Clotrimazole used for dermatophyte treatment. Experimental model has been tested using sheep hoof plate for the in vitro tests to stimulate human nails. Mint, clove and basil with 4 mg/ml of bee propolis have a comparable efficacy to those of Naftifine-HCl and Clotrimazole. There is a great necessity for new effective low price and safe antidermatophyte agents to avoid recurrent infection. Propolis synergistic could be of great importance with essential oils of plants in dermatophyte therapy.

  • The present study was to investigate in vitro antimicrobial effects of propolis against six different fish bacterial pathogens, Aeromonas hydrophila, Edwardsiella tarda, Vibrio vulnificus, V. parahaemolyticus, A. salmonicida subsp. masoucida, A. salmonicida subsp. salmonicida) using minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bacteriocidal concentration (MBC) tests. In the results, propolis exhibited antimicrobial activity against all bacteria used in the present study, but there was no marked difference in bacterial species except Vibrio species. Collectively, propolis was thought to be an usefulness antimicrobial substance for controlling bacterial diseases in the fish industry.

  • Propolis, obtained from honeybee hives, has been used in Oriental folk medicine as an anti-inflammatory, anti-carcinogenic, and immunomodulatory agent. There is considerable evidence suggesting that angiogenesis and chronic inflammation are codependent. Blockage of angiogenesis results in an anti-inflammatory effect. Ethanol (EEP) and ether extracts of propolis (REP), and caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE), an active component of propolis, were examined for their anti-angiogenic activities using the chick embryo chorioallantoic membrane (CAM), and the calf pulmonary arterial endothelial (CPAE) cell proliferation, assays. The presence of EEP, REP and CAPE inhibited angiogenesis in the CAM assay and the proliferation of CPAE cells. The results suggest that anti-angiogenic activities of EEP, REP and CAPE are also responsible for their anti-inflammatory effect.

Effect of Propolis on Healing of Full-thickness Skin Wound in Rabbits (Propolis가 토끼의 전층 피부 창상치유에 미치는 영향)

  • The effects of vaselin, silver sulfadiazine and propolis on healing of full-thickness skin defects were evaluated in rabbits. Two wounds measuring 2{times}2cm$ were created bilaterally (4 wounds/rabbit) on the dorsolateral aspect of the trunk of 17 Ne Zealand white. Wound treatments were evenly distributed 4 sites, using a Latin square design. Treatments evaluated were: vaselin(group A), silver sulfadiazine(group B), 5% propolis (group C) and 10% propolis(group D). On days 3, 7 and 14, mean percentage of wound in group A, B, and C. On days 21 and 28, mean percentage of wound contraction in group D were significantly higher than those of groups B and C, but were not higher than that of group A. Microscopically fibersis and epithelialization were noticed on days 14 and 28 after wounding in all group. Rates of fibrosis of collagen fiber and epithelialization of groups C and D were exceeded those of groups A and B. All wounds in all group achieved 100% healing during the 28-day study period. Results indicate that use of propolis as would ointment on full-thickness skin wounds in rabbits increase rate of healing.

The anti-diabetic effect of propolis using Hedges' standardized mean difference (헤지의 표준화된 평균차를 이용한 프로폴리스의 항-당뇨 효과)

  • The present study was carried out to summarize the effect of propolis in the diabetic rats by meta-analysis related studies. The association measure to test effect of propolis was Hedges's standardized mean difference between group of rats induced streptozotocin(STZ) or alloxan and group of rats induced STZ or alloxan treated with propolis about the considered 4 effect factors. In this particular fixed-effect model, blood glucose, Cholesterol, Triglyceride were significantly reduce. The case of heterogenous variable such as body weight, blood glucose, cholesterol, triglyceride, random-effect model was applied. In this model, blood glucose, triglyceride were decreased significantly in propolis treated group. According to the meta-regression analysis, period of injection was significant for body weight and blood glucose, cholesterol.

Chemical and Organoleptic Properties of Some Dairy Products Supplemented with Various Concentration of Propolis: A Preliminary Study

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the chemical and organoleptic properties of some dairy products supplemented with different concentrations of propolis (0%, 0.5%, 1.0%, 1.5%, and 2.0%). There was no significant difference between pH values of the treated and control groups. All samples were tested using 20 evaluators divided in five categories. Compared to the control, the best organoleptic test results were obtained for market milk, yoghurt, and Kefir supplemented with 0.5% propolis. Statistical difference was observed in the taste, flavor, color, texture, and overall acceptability of market milk, yoghurt, and Kefir between the treated and control groups (p<0.05). However, as propolis has a strong aromatic flavor, it should be supplemented in small amounts, so as not to affect the organoleptic properties of the product. In conclusion, this study provides useful information for the development of functional dairy products using propolis.

  • A new UPLC-DAD method for simultaneous determination of p-coumaric acid and trans-cinnamic acid in propolis was developed using Halo-C18 column and step gradient elution of MeCN and $0.1%H_3PO_4$ in 8 min. The method was validated by specificity, linearity, limit of detection, limit of quantification, precision(intra- and inter-day variability) and recovery tests. The validated method was sufficiently applicable for quantitative analysis of propolis products as well as propolis collected from different regions in Korea. The established method is simple, appropriate and efficient, and can be used for quality assessment of Korean propolis.

  • The study aimed to enhance the properties of polylactic acid (PLA), a biodegradable and biocompatible substitute for fossil-based plastics. Since the applicability of PLA has been limited because of its toughness and brittleness, microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) and propolis were introduced into PLA. As a result, the PLA film with MFC/propolis showed significant improvements in mechanical strength, elongation, and storage modulus, while also experiencing a decrease in the glass transition temperature. Additionally, the presence of polyphenols in propolis led to a reduction in light transmittance in the UV wavelength range. These enhancements are attributed to MFC tightly bonding with PLA polymers, and propolis acting as a plasticizer and mediator between MFC and PLA, preventing agglomeration. These reinforced PLA films have the potential to be used in flexible packaging for light-sensitive products.

Anti-Helicobacter pylori Activity of Korean Propolis (국산 프로폴리스의 Helicobacter pyrori 억제효과)

  • Propolis possesses antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, anaesthetic and immunostimulating activities. The aim of this study was to evaluated chemical composition and in vitro anti-Helicobacter pylori activity of eight propolis ethanolic extracts form different region in Korea. The chemical composition of eight Korean propolis was investicated by absorption spectrophotomety and UHPLC. Total penolic and total flavonoids content ranged between $21{\pm}1.5$ and $31{\pm}1.8$ gallic acid g/100 g and $7.2{\pm}0.9$ and $24.4{\pm}1.9$ quercetin g/100 g, respectively. The p-coumaric acid as standard components content ranged between $0.29{\pm}0.00$ and $2.34{\pm}0.02mg/g$ using UHPLC. Cinnamic acid content between $0.43{\pm}0.00$ and $1.33{\pm}0.01mg/g$. 80% ethanolic extract of propolis against H. pylori was evaluated by using the disc diffusion method. Ethanol was used as a control. Mean diameters of H. pylori growth inhibition using $10{\mu}g/mL$, $50{\mu}g/mL$ or $100{\mu}g/mL$ ethanol propolis per disc were 0, ranging from 0.9 to 2.1 mm and from 1.9 to 3.5 mm, respectively. In conclusion, variation in the chemical composition of Korean propolis were mainly due to the difference in the preferred regional plants visited by honeybees. Also Korean propolis possesses considerable antibacterial activity against H. pylori. There was not confirmed a correlation between the chemical composion contens and anti-H. pylori effect. The potential of propolis in the prevention or treatment of H. pylori infection is worth further extensive evaluation.

Optimal Ethanol Extraction Conditions of Domestic Propolis and Its Chemical Composition (국내산 프로폴리스의 에탄올 최적추출조건 및 그 화학성분)

  • To determine the characteristics of propolis fermented with microorganisms, the optimal conditions for propolis extraction with ethanol were first reviewed, and the physicochemical properties of the extracted propolis were then investigated. The shaking and stationary extraction methods were tested. The flavonoid content was 6.40 mg/g when the stationary extraction method was used and 6.95 mg/g when the shaking extraction method was used. The ethanol concentration was then varied, and the use of 50, 60, 70, and 80% ethanol resulted in the total flavonoid content in the propolis samples reaching 6.75, 8.45, 7.45, and 7.75 mg/g, respectively. This indicated that a 60% (v/v) concentration was optimal. As the extraction time was increased from 1 to 3 hr, the flavonoid content slightly increased; however, extending the extraction step to more than 3 hr did not significantly affect the flavonoid content. In terms of the extraction temperature, the highest concentration of flavonoids (8.63 mg/g) was detected at 50℃. In the propolis samples, 5.80, 2.61, and 1.32 mg/g of fructose, sucrose, and rhamnose were detected, respectively. As for the amino acid content, 17 amino acids, including glutamic acid, were detected, and the total amino acid content was 2.49 mg/g.
