  • Hysteretic energy dissipating devices (HEDDs) have been increasingly applied to building construction to improve the seismic performance. The seismic responses of such damped structures are significantly affected by HEDD's structural properties. An accurate investigation on the propagation of HEDD's structural properties is required for reasonable evaluation of the seismic performance of a structure. This study aims to develop simplified methods that can estimate the collective uncertainty-propagation to the seismic response of damped structures employing HEDDs. To achieve this, three- and six-story steel moment-resisting frames were selected and the propagations of the individual HEDD's property-uncertainties were evaluated when they are subjected to various levels of seismic demand. Based on the result of individual uncertainty-propagations, a simplified method is proposed to evaluate the variation of seismic response collectively propagated by HEDD's property-uncertainties and is verified by comparing with the exact collective uncertainty-propagation calculated using the Monte Carlo simulation method. The proposed method, called as a modified SRSS method in this study, is established from a conventional square root of the sum of the squares (SRSS) method with the relative contributions of the individual HEDD's property-uncertainty propagations. This study shows that the modified SRSS method provides a better estimation than the conventional SRSS method and can significantly reduce computational time with reasonable accuracy compared with the Monte Carlo simulation method.

  • Back-propagation(BP) algorithm needs a lot of time to train the artificial neural network (ANN) to get high accuracy level in classification tasks. So there have been extensive researches to process back-propagation algorithm on parallel processors. This paper prsents a linear systolic array which calculates forward-backward propagation of BP algorithm at the same time using effective space-time transformation and PE structure. First, we analyze data flow of forwared and backward propagations and then, represent the BP algorithm into data dapendency graph (DG) which shows parallelism inherent in the BP algorithm. Next, apply space-time transformation on the DG of ANN is turn with orthogonal direction projection. By doing so, we can get a snakelike systolic array. Also we calculate the interval of input for parallel processing, calculate the indices to make the right datas be used at the right PE when forward and bvackward propagations are processed in the same PE. And then verify the correctness of output when forward and backward propagations are executed at the same time. By doing so, the proposed system maximizes parallelism of BP algorithm, minimizes th enumber of PEs. And it reduces the execution time by 2 times through making idle PEs participate in forward-backward propagation at the same time.

  • The purpose of this research is focussed on the numerical predictions of the heat and smoke propagations for a passenger train fire in an underground subway tunnel for different air supply and extraction flowrates. The analysis is performed for one of the stations on subway line #5 in Seoul under the emergency operation mode for different air supply and extraction flowrates. Five different the air supply and extraction flowrates are considered for the numerical analyses. The numerical results show that the air supply and extraction flowrates affect the smoke control performance significantly by improving the smoke removal performance for the balanced control of air supply and smoke extraction and for the unbalanced control with lager smoke extraction than air supply.

  • Engineering change (EC) objects are the data structure and related operations that can support applications for EC procedures or processes. Their functionalities include controlling management data, specifying related product structure, and archiving a history of product structure changes for EC management. In this paper we introduce a systematic approach to support the propagation of changes between different product structure views using the history of structure changes in EC objects. The change propagations supported by EC objects enable designers to maintain the consistency of multiple product structure views for engineering, manufacturing or even customer support applications. This paper also includes EC examples and experimental implementations for the proposed EC objects.

  • Colton and Wendland [1] have considered acoustic wave propagations in a spherically symmetric medium. They used constructive method for in a spherically symmetric medium. They used constructive method for solving the exterior Neumann problem. Jones [2] has derived an integral equation for the exterior acoustic problem. Jones has also discussed analytical and numerical solution of the acoustic problem.

  • In this note we answer to a question of Curto: Non-first two equal weights in the weighted shift force subnormality in the presence of quadratic hyponormality. Also it is shown that every hyponormal weighted shift with two equal weights cannot be polynomially hyponormal without being flat.

  • Duplex composites such as Y-TZP/Y-TZP-20 wt.% Al2O3 and Y-TZP/Y-TZP- 40 wt.% Al2O3 were made by mixing the sieve-shaked granules followed by isostatic pressing and sintering at 150$0^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour. So Y-TZP became matrix region and Y-TZP-20 wt.% Al2O3 or Y-TZP-40 wt.% Al2O3 became dispersed regions. In these composites, propagating cracks due to thermal shock always run into the dispersed region because these regions act as compressive zone due to low thermal expansion than matrix region. So duplexes having dispersed regions of Y-TZP-40 wt.% Al2O3 showed higher retained strength after thermal shock than matrix only composites because crack propagations were stopped more or less in the dispersed region. But when crack propagations were much more easy than matrix like Y-TZP-20 wt.% Al2O3 region, retained strength was decreased than the matrix only composites despite of the low initial strength.

  • There is a well-defined propagation model, named the random constant spread (RCS) model, which explains worms that spread their clones with a random scanning strategy. This model uses the number of infected hosts in a domain as a factor in the worms' propagation. However, there are difficulties in explaining the characteristics of new Internet worms because they have several considerable new features: the denial of service by network saturation, the utilization of a faster scanning strategy, a smaller size in the worm's propagation packet, and to cause maximum damage before human-mediated responses are possible. Therefore, more effective factors are required instead of the number of infected hosts. In this paper, the network bandwidth usage rate is found to be an effective factor that explains the propagations of the new Internet worms with the random scanning strategy. The analysis and simulation results are presented using this factor. The simulation results show that the scan rate is more sensitive than the propagation packet for detecting worms' propagations.

  • In this paper, unreinforced and geogrid-reinforced soil foundations were modeled by discrete element method and this performed under surface strip footing loads. The effects of horizontal position of geogrid, vertical position, thickness, number, confining pressure have been investigated on the footing settlement and propagation of tensile force along the geogrids. Also, interaction between rectangular tunnel and strip footing with and without presence of geogrid layer has been analyzed. Experimental results of the literature were used to validation of relationships between the numerically achieved footing pressure-settlement for foundations of reinforced and unreinforced soil. Models and micro input parameters which used in the numerical modelling of reinforced and unreinforced soil tunnel were similar to parameters which were used in soil foundations. Model dimension was 1000 mm* 600 mm. Normal and shear stiffness of soils were 5*105 and 2.5 *105 N/m, respectively. Normal and shear stiffness of geogrid were 1*109 and 1*109 N/m, respectively. Loading rate was 0.001 mm/sec. Micro input parameters used in numerical simulation gain by try and error. In addition of the quantitative tensile force propagation along the geogrids, the footing settlements were visualized. Due to collaboration of three layers of geogrid reinforcements the bearing capacity of the reinforced soil tunnel was greatly improved. In such practical reinforced soil formations, the qualitative displacement propagations of soil particles in the soil tunnel and the quantitative vertical displacement propagations along the soil layers/geogrids represented the geogrid reinforcing impacts too.
