  • For deciding the profitability and feasibility of the construction project, the schematic estimation has to not only link the design decision-making but also estimate the cost with reliability. The Object-based schematic estimation system was developed for easily linking with design-making and supports to evaluate the design alternatives in the design development stage but didn't consider the cost estimated by object supplementary and parameter work item. This research presents the Integrated Object-Parameter Schematic Estimation Model in the design development stage that can lead to more accurately estimate the cost through analyzing historical data from the high-storied office buildings. For the development of the proposed model for schematic estimation, after analyzing and classifying the work items from the Bills of Quantities(BOQs) and drawings of historical data, this research proposed the methods of estimating cost in accordance with attributes of each work item using regression analysis. In addition, a case study is performed for the effectiveness as comparing the proposed model with the previous estimating model.

  • The managerial effort to acquire and maintain detailed construction control data has been the major barrier to improving the effectiveness of construction project management. Therefore, utilizing data acquisition technologies (DAT) can greatly improve the construction management processes by automating the data collection. Even though many researches attempted to explore the DAT utilization in construction, there has been no comprehensive study that examine the viability of DAT usage from a comprehensive perspective. In this context, the purpose of this study is to investigate the current efforts and future recommendation of DAT implementation in the construction industry.

  • Education support programs in underdeveloped countries are important parts of Korea Official Development Assistance (ODA). Even though Education aid for underdeveloped country is increasing every year, expectations of underdeveloped countries for educational cooperation is not enough. Korea's remarkable economic growth is essential to technical education and training that has been investing in fact. Currently, in the underdeveloped country it is needed human resources development for poverty reduction and national economic development. The purpose of this study is to suggest a strategic approach method for technical education support maximizing the effectiveness in the economic development of recipient countries.

  • Recent demands from construction industry have emphasized the capability for graduates to have improved skills both technical and non-technical such as problem solving, interpersonal communication. To satisfy these demands, problem-based learning that is an instructional method characterized by the use of real world problem has been adopted and has proven its effectiveness various disciplines. However, in spite of the importance of field senses and dealing with real problem, construction engineering education has generally focused on traditional lecture-oriented course. In order to improve limitations of current construction education and to satisfy recent demands from construction industry, this paper proposes a new educational approach that is Failure-Based Learning for using combination of the procedural characteristics of the problem-based learning theory in construction technology education utilizing failure information that has the educational value in the construction area by reinterpreting characteristics of construction industry and construction failure information. The major results of this study are summarized as follows. 1) Educational effect of problem-based learning methodology and limitation of application in construction area 2) The educational value of the information on construction failure and limitation in application of the information in construction sector 3) Anticipated effect from application of the failure-based learning 4) Development and application of the failure-based learning conceptual model.

  • This study was aimed to provide the controlled terminology for adverse drug reactions by selecting an appropriate internationally standardized classifications (WHO-ART or MedDRA). We collected the relevant information on ADR terminology systems including WHO-ART and MedDRA by online searching and visiting pharmaceutical companies and WHO UMC (Uppsala Monitoring Centre, Uppsala, Sweden). For MedDRA, project leader directly communicated with the officer of MSSO (Maintenance and Support Services Organization). Collecting all the pertinent information, two possible terminology classifications or systems (WHO-ART and MedDRA) were compared in the views of acceptability, cost-effectiveness and international feasibility and reviewed by the consultation committee and finally WHO-ART was selected.

  • An innovative multi-story Semi-Active Tuned Mass Damper (SATMD) building system is proposed to control seismic response of existing structures. The application of adding new stories as large tuned mass and semi-active (SA) resettable actuators as central features of the control scheme is derived. For the effective control of the structures, the optimal tuning parameters are considered for the large mass ratio, for which a previously proposed equation is used and the practical optimal stiffness is allocated to the actuator stiffness and rubber bearing stiffness. A two-degree-of freedom (2-DOF) model is adopted to verify the principal efficiency of the suggested structural control concept. The simulations for this study utilizes the three ground motions, from SAC project, having probability of exceedance of 50% in 50 years, 10% in 50 years, and 2% in 50 years for the Los Angeles region. 12-story moment resisting frames, which are modified as '12+2' and '12+4' story structures, are investigated to assess the viability and effectiveness of the system that aims to reduce the response of the buildings to earthquakes. The control ability of the SATMD scheme is compared to that of an uncontrolled and an ideal Passive Tuned Mass Damper (PTMD) building system. From the performance results of suggested '12+2' and '12+4' story retrofitting case studies, SATMD systems shows significant promise for application of structural control where extra stories might be added.

  • Korean agriculture and rural sector has undergone a wide range of reform after the Uruguay Round. Major policy measure is to put finances of huge budget from tax payers since 1994 in preparation of the Rural Development Strategy and Reform Program. Both in the total amount and individual size of the subsidy and loan for eligible farmers and farmers group are large and drastically enormous than any other programs in the past. The strategy adopted was a bottom-up approach, Particularly in selecting the project with local autonomy. However, it has been still criticized as the form of centralized control of budget and decsion. In terms of the program effectiveness too, it is doubtful to judge that Korean agriculture is in a road to getting the international competetiveness as targeted. Since the local autonomy was started in 1995, the political structure has been settling in a way to be more locally institutionalized. Rural development policy, as the key point of economic and industrial dimension of local autonomy, should be initiated and practiced in real term by the local government. This paper, in this concern, in reviewing the past rural development prolicy and programs, discussed the necessary issues relevant to legal bases of land uses in Korea. Further, the direction of increasing local automous power of local government was discussed in the senses of budgetary control and decision. The power and budget should be allocated more to the rural development plans of local government in order to fulfilize integrated rural spatial development in this new era of globalization.

  • The commercial service of KTX from April 1st 2004 has realized that whole country has shrunk into half-day life zone and it opened the times of speed. However, some technical problems unexpected before service have been raised and, among them, the noise generation at train passing was claimed by the residents living nearby the track and it is often publicized by the broadcastings and newspapers. In case where the residential area is close to the track, the installation of noise barrier at trackside is the general measures for noise reduction on bridge section and earthwork section. In case of KTX project, such measures were actually taken without any exception; however, the noise level is still high. In this study, analysis for the reason of higher noise level in spite of which the noise barriers are being installed was carried out, the sample of insulation material effective for noise barrier was manufactured and the performance of the insulation material was evaluated to verify its effectiveness

  • In this paper a ultrasonic oil level meter for measuring oil levels of vehicle transmissions is designed and its effectiveness is shown by experiments. On a FPGA(Field Programmable Gate Array) project IDE(Integrated Development Environment), all digital circuits for the meter is designed using a FPGA, which enables simplicity and high performance of the meter as well as short developing time. Also, power supplying circuit and analog circuits to process low voltage ultrasonic echo signal are designed and simulated. Under experiments, the designed level meter is verified to provide accuracy to within 1mm.
