How the domestic industry of Costa Rica became more competitive in the US market. Antecedents and Trends

  • Purpose - The aim of this work is to study the reorientation that the export industrial sectors in Costa Rica have experienced during the last 20 years. Research design, data, methodology - The study employs the Cluster Analysis with the export data (20 years of cut-off period) from Costa Rica to the U.S-market. To make the predictions, the technique of the time series was used, with official data (from 2001 to 2010) from the U.S. Department of Commerce and the U.S. International Trade Commission. Results - The Cluster Analysis, show how the economic sectors of traditional products exports of Costa Rica have progressively become in exporters of non-traditional products, meanwhile,the time series confirms that this trend will continue, at least during the next five years. Conclusions - The industry of traditional products exports of Costa Rica (dressmaking, vegetables, coffee, mate, species, etc.) will progressively become in exporters of non- traditional products with a high-tech component (i.e., mechanical equipment and devices, electronic devices and medical equipment),as a consequence of the Chinese (Costa Rica's main competitor) economy's presence in the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OCDE). This fact has enabled the potential improvement of Costa Rica's international competitiveness in the U.S. market.

수출 경쟁력 지수에 의한 EU시장에서의 한국 제조 기업의 경쟁력 분석 (An Analysis of the Korean manufacturing export firms' Competitiveness in EU market by Export Competitiveness Index)

  • The objective of this paper is to examine the competitiveness of Korean export firms in EU market. In this study, market share index, RCA index, trade specialization index, and market competitiveness index were used as an analytical tool. On the market share index, Korea had a large market share in the SITC section 7(machinery and transport equipment) market in EU. On the RCA index, Korea appeared to have high export competitiveness in the electrical machinery, apparatus and appliances, n.e.s.(not elsewhere specified[stated]), and electrical parts thereof (77), travel goods, handbags and similar containers(83), textile yarn, fabrics, made-up articles, n.e.s., and related products(65), and iron and steel(67) division. On the trade specialization index, however, Korea appeared to tend to decline generally. On the market competitiveness index, Korea appeared to have competitive advantage in the iron and steel(67), machinery specialized for particular industries(72), office machines and automatic data-processing machines(75), electrical machinery, apparatus and appliances, n.e.s., and electrical parts thereof(77), road vehicles(78), and other transport equipment(79) division; but in 29 divisions, the index indicates that Korean firms' competitiveness was low. Finally, the authors discuss the implications of these findings and offer directions for future study.

세계 관상어산업의 경쟁력 분석을 통한 우리나라 관상어산업의 육성 방향 (Fostering direction of the Ornamental Fish Industry in Korea through a competitive analysis of International Ornamental Fish Industry)

  • This research examined a task to foster into the export industry, through analyzing the competitiveness of the ornamental fish industry and identifying the position of Korea's ornamental industry in the world. Ornamental fish in Korea holds the world's leading aquaculture technology, but products are limited to a few species, lacking competitive products. In the case of aquarium supplies, the Korean technology level is receiving relatively positive marks in the global market, but ornamental fish products are lagging behind the global trend. In other words, Korea's ornamental fish industry has the overall technical foundation, but lacks differentiation in the global market. Meanwhile, Korea's market share of world trade market in fishery products is minimal. Growth was also analyzed not high compared to other countries. Various trade competitiveness index results rated very low in competitiveness, but it is hard to compare Korea with other countries which have already built a strong foundation in the ornamental fish industry. Therefore, for the mid to long term Korea should adapt a "Choice and concentration" strategy and focus on the production of ornamental fish and aquarium supplies, which will enable Korea to become differentiated in the global market and capture the world exports.

한-베트남 임산물 교역동향과 경쟁력분석 (Analyses of Trade Trends and Competitiveness of Korea and Vietnam in Forest Products)

  • 이 연구는 한국과 베트남의 임산물 교역동향 및 교역의 특징을 살펴보고 주요품목의 경쟁력을 분석하여 한-베트남 FTA 임산물협상에 있어 한국이 취할 수 있는 방향을 제시하였다. 한-베트남 임산물 교역규모는 2011년 2억726만 달러에 달한다. 한국은 주로 베트남에 단기소득 임산물을 수출하고 있는 반면, 목재류를 수입하고 있다. 특히 최근 5년 평균 목재류 수입액은 한국의 대베트남 수입액 중 88%에 달하는 것으로 나타났다. 한-베트남 교역에 있어 수출 품목은 다양하지 않고 수출액은 적은 반면, 수입은 저부가가치 목제품을 위주로 대량 수입되고 있다. 한-베트남 임산물의 경쟁력 분석결과 한국의 임산물 중 경쟁력이 있는 품목은 3개 품목이나, 베트남은 11개 품목으로 나타났다. 교역구조 및 경쟁력 분석결과와 현행 관세율을 고려할 때 제재목, 합판 등을 민감품목으로 지정하여 관세인하를 최소화하고 관세인하 기간을 장기로 설정할 수 있는 방향으로 협상하도록 하여야할 것이다.

주요 단기임산물의 일본 수출 가능성 (Feasibility of Exporting Korean major Non-Timber Forest Products in Japan Market)

  • 대 일본 단기소득임산물 수출액은 2010년 1,754만 달러에서 2014년 942만 달러로 2010년 대비 46.3% 감소하였다. 추가적인 노력을 통해 대 일본 수출 촉진이 필요한 시점이다. 본 연구는 일본의 FTA, TPP 등 시장 개방 여건 변화에 대응하여 밤, 표고버섯, 떫은감, 산양삼의 일본 시장에서의 경쟁력 확보 방안을 모색하기 위해 마련되었다. 본 연구에서는 일본 주부의 단기 임산물의 속성별 선호도를 분석하기 위하여 컨조인트 분석을 활용하였다. 분석 결과, 임산물별 속성 및 수준에 대한 뚜렷한 선호에 차이가 나타났으며, 한국산 단기소득임산물은 중국산 단기소득임산물 보다 선호되었으나 일본산 단기 소득임산물 보다는 경쟁력이 다소 떨어지는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 일본 주부는 가격에 민감하게 반응하지 않았으며, 다른 속성 변화에 더 민감하게 반응하는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구에서 도출된 결과는 우리나라 주요 단기임산물의 대 일본 수출 방안 수립에 활용될 수 있을 것이다.

기술수준별 한국 수출제품의 대 민트(MINTs) 국제경쟁력 분석 (An Empirical Analysis on International Competitiveness of Korean Export Products against MINTs based on Technological Level)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 민트의 성장성에 주목하여 기술수준별로 분류된 한국 수출제품의 민트에 대한 경쟁력의 현황 및 경쟁력의 변화 추이를 분석하고 시사점을 제안하는 데 있다. 분석결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 대 민트 교역에서 한국의 교역액 및 무역수지는 지속적으로 증가하고 있고, 교역 품목으로는 완제품 및 부품과 연료 등 1차 품목이 주로 수출입 되고 있다. 둘째, 무역성과지수를 분석한 결과 국산 수출제품은 민트 국가들에 대해 높은 경쟁력을 나타내고 있고, 추세적으로도 경쟁력을 유지하고 있다. 셋째, 국산 수출품이 민트에 대해 경쟁력을 확보하고 있지만 품목별 경쟁력은 국가별로 차이를 보이고 있다. 분석결과를 토대로 제시된 시사점은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 안정적인 에너지원 확보 차원에서 자원 부국 민트와의 경제적 유대관계 형성이 중요하다. 둘째, 대 민트 교역에 부정적인 영향을 미칠 수 있는 경제여건에 대한 검토와 대응방안이 강구되어야 한다. 셋째, 국산 수출품의 민트 국가에 대한 안정적인 경쟁력 유지 전략을 구축해야 한다. 넷째, 대 민트 교역의 내용이 국가에 따라 상이하므로 수출전략도 국가별로 차별화된 접근 방법이 요구된다. 다섯째, 민트가 집단적 경제협력체를 형성하여 영향력을 확대해 갈 것에 대비한 대책 마련도 필요하다.

한국의 방산수출 전략 연구 (A Study of The ROK's Defense Exporting Strategies)

  • Defense industry as 'a new dynamics of economic growth' policy implies driving policy of defense products' export. The purpose of this study is to suggest suitable strategies to meet with such policy in terms of region and individual nation. The strategies towards advanced region are joint sale strategy for the third countries, extension strategy of trade-off and development strategy of products to exploit niche markets. The strategies towards non-advanced regions are package strategy including exchange of economic development know-how, strengthening strategy of relationships to leading groups in national decision-making processes, exploit strategy of sales market through transfer discard and surplus equipments to other nations, government to government sale strategy towards countries holding low leveled equipment maintaining and management abilities. Finally, successive strategies require leaders' will, active sales diplomacy and active international cooperations of defense industry.

APPROACHING A LINEAR PROGRAMMING MODEL FOR PRODUCTION PLANNING OF A READY-MADE GARMENTS INDUSTRY

  • The ready-made garments (RMG) have been making a crucial contribution about of 81% of total export and 12.36 % of total GDP of the country which is now the single biggest export earner for Bangladesh. The cheap production cost is the key important factor to explore this RMG sector. But these RMG sector is running on the basis of intuition based decisions. Though they are making profit it is not optimal. In this study, a deterministic model is developed to help the RMG to minimize the production cost and to maximize their profit along with optimal utilization of available resources. 10 different types of products are taken from one of the garments factories of Gazipur, Dhaka to prepare this research work. This model suggests the manufacturer on which products along with how much should be produced to meet the future demand by maintaining the lowest production cost that ultimately maximize the profit of the organization, and also helps Bangladesh to compete in the international market with 'Made in Bangladesh'. LINDO programming is used here to solve this LP model.

Analysis on the Causes and Countermeasures of Sino-US Trade Friction

  • The study attempts to investigate the causes of Sino-U.S. trade friction in recent years and provides countermeasures accordingly. The import and export volume of two countries, the product structure of China's export, the 337th Act lawsuits related to China, the industries involved in trade friction, and the G-L Index of Sino-U.S. Products are analyzed in detail. The causes of Sino-US trade frictions are discussed from the aspect of mercantilism and trade protectionism, interest groups and governments' trade policies, Chinese product structure, intellectual property protection in China, and performance of Chinese enterprises in litigation. Based on these, countermeasures are put forward. China needs to implement industrial upgrading, increasing the added value of products, and improving intellectual property protection. A trade friction warning system also needs to be constructed. The Chinese government needs to carry out strategic dialogue and international negotiation.

  • We, in this paper, suggest the Yeosu internationalization strategy for holding the 2012 World EXPO in Yeosu successfully, First of all, we analyze some problems that hinder the internationalization of Yeosu. Our analysis, also, provides several strategic solutions to those problems by foreign direct investment, international trade, hub port development, and international tourism. first strategy is to create a more favorable business environment for foreign investors. Foreign direct investment is the most effective way to internationalize the specific district. Second strategy is to expand the export of small and medium-sized firms in Yeosu. Especially, local firms with agricultural/fishery products have to develop various new products and introduce the effective international marketing strategy. Final strategy is to develop the hub port in Yeosu and the new tourist resources to attract foreign tourists.
