Research on the Influences of New Product Design and New Product Development Process Management on New Product Development Performance in Taiwan's Industries

  • This study aims to probe into the influence of new product design and new product development process management on development performance. The research finding demonstrates that product design reveals positive and significant influence on new product development performance. Through statistical analysis, this study finds that companies in Taiwan value new product design. When companies value it more, they tend to have better new product development performance. With regard to the relation between new product development process management and new product development performance, the empirical results demonstrate that companies would pay more attention on new product development process management. With regard to new product idea and assessment, concept design and development, product function test and mass production in the market, through statistical analysis, this study finds that companies that value process management of new product development tend to have better new product development performance. As to the influence of new product design and new product process management on new product development performance, statistical analysis result demonstrates that the integration between new product design valued by companies in Taiwan and development process management would lead to significantly positive influence on new product development performance of the companies.

블루오션 신제품개발 전략에 관한 실증연구 (An Empirical Study on the Blue Ocean New Product Development Strategy)

  • Recently, Kim and Mauborgne (2005a) has introduced the concept of blue ocean strategy that provides quantum leap in value innovation, thus creating new market space. This study, based on the blue ocean strategy concept, suggests blue ocean new product development strategy, and attempts to examine how much impact this blue ocean new product development strategy has on new product performance, compared to existing new product development strategy perspectives based on competitive strategy-based new product development strategy and resource-based new product development strategy, in an empirical way. The research results show that the blue ocean new product development strategy has a statistically significant impact on new product performance. In addition, it was revealed that such contingency variables as firm size and environmental dynamism have moderating effect on the relationship between the blue ocean new product development strategy and new product performance. The blue ocean new product development strategy is more effective in the small-sized firms than the large-sized ones, and its effect on new product performance is different according to environmental dynamism.

  • 본 연구는 벤처기업의 제품개발 전략 실행과 제품개발 성과간의 관계에서 제품 혁신성의 매개효과를 검토하고 있다. 벤처기업의 제품개발과 관련된 기존 연구들은 주로 벤처기업의 기술력에 초점을 맞추어 보유한 기술 수준과 연구개발 투자가 어떻게 제품개발 성과를 증대시키는 지에 주목하고 있으며, 최근 연구들은 조직수준에 형성된 기업가정신이 제품개발 성과에 어떠한 영향을 미치는 지에 대해 논의하고 있다. 비록 벤처기업의 제품개발과 관련된 많은 중요한 논의들이 형성되어 있지만, 제품개발 전략을 실행하기 위한 연구개발 기능 분화가 어떻게 이루어져야 제품개발 성과가 높은지에 대한 논의는 부족하며, 조직수준에 형성된 기업가정신이 어떠한 과정을 거쳐 제품개발 성과를 달성하게 하는지에 대한 설명 또한 부족하다. 이에 본 연구는 한국의 벤처기업을 대상으로 조사한 설문조사 자료를 이용하여, 벤처기업의 연구개발 기능 분화로 나타난 연구개발 부서의 존재와 벤처기업에 형성된 기업가적 지향성이 제품개발 성과에 미치는 정(+)의 효과를 살펴보았으며, Day & Wensley(1988) 모형을 적용하여, 제품개발 전략 실행과 제품개발 성과간의 관계를 제품 혁신성이 매개하는 지를 확인하였다. 한국의 중소 벤처기업을 대상으로 수집한 703개 자료를 분석한 결과, 연구개발 부서의 기능 분화 및 기업가적 지향성 수준과 같은 제품개발 전략 실행이 제품 혁신성에 정(+)의 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났으며, 제품 혁신성은 제품개발 전략 실행이 제품개발 성과에 미치는 영향을 대체로 매개하여 성과로 연계되는 것으로 나타났다. 특히 기존제품 개발의 경우, 연구개발 부서를 통한 제품개발 전략실행이 제품 혁신성을 높여 제품개발 성과를 높이는 것으로 나타났으며, 신제품개발의 경우 기업가적 지향성이 제품 혁신성을 높여 제품개발 성과를 높이는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 분석결과는 벤처기업의 제품개발 전략 실행과 제품개발 성과에 관심을 가진 연구자들과 제품개발 전략이 제품개발 성과로 나타나는 과정을 파악하고자 하는 실무자들에게 시사점을 제공할 것이다.

신제품개발 관리에서 전략적 학습의 역할 (The Role of Strategic Learning in New Product Development Management)

  • One of characteristics of firms having successfully developed new products is that they are practicing strategic learning, that is, organizational learning for preparing the future. In this context, we attempts to examine the effect of strategic learning on the proficiency of new product development activities and new product outcome, in an empirical way. In addition, we Investigated the moderating effect of new product innovativeness on the relationship among strategic learning, proficiency of new product development activities, and new product outcome. The analysis results show that the strategic learning has a positive impact on both the proficiency of new product development activities and new product outcome. And it was found that the impact of strategic learning on the proficiency of new product development activities is increasing when firms developing new products with high degree of innovativeness. However, the impact of strategic learning on new product outcome was not different according to new product innovativeness. This results shed some insight on the role of strategic learning in the new product development management.

  • This paper proposes a framework for product development including hardware and software components. The framework provides separation of the hardware dependent software, an integrated product development process, and integration of software components with product configurations and product structures. In order to separates the hardware dependent software, the framework considers product configuration modules and engineering changes of associated hardware and software components. The proposed product development process integrates development of the hardware dependent software into the existing product development process. In order to integrates the hardware dependent software with product configurations and product structures, the framework represents software components by existing product data models in Product Data Management (PDM). The framework is applied to development of a robot system including hardware and software components in order to show its effectiveness.

  • The purpose of this paper is to study user's involvement in new product development (NPD). It seeks to identify the factors involving user and design practices in the design process of new product development. A survey was conducted on 20 respondents consisting of designers involved in product development from various industries. The study focused on the early activities of the product design process which is called product specification. The analysis performed considers the importance of involving users in design decision. The outcome of this research is the significance of involving users and its effect on product development activities. The research also provides a model for an integrated user, designer and product knowledge activity in the product development process.

PDM 시스템을 활용한 Product Data Analytics 교육 훈련 (Education and Training of Product Data Analytics using Product Data Management System)

  • Product data analytics (PDA) is a data-driven analysis method that uses product data management (PDM) databases as its operational data. It aims to understand and evaluate product development processes indirectly through the analysis of product data from the PDM databases. To educate and train PDA efficiently, this study proposed an approach that employs courses for both product development and PDA in a class. The participant group for product development provides a PDM database as a result of their product development activities, and the other group for PDA analyses the PDM database and provides analysis result to the product development group who can explain causes of the result. The collaboration between the two groups can enhance the efficiency of the education and training course on PDA. This study also includes an application example of the approach to a graduate class on PDA and discussion of its result.

국내 외식업체의 신상품 개발 전략 및 성과 분석에 관한 연구 (Study of New Product Development Strategy and Its Outcome Analysis for Domestic Restaurant Business)

  • There are various factors to determine success and failure of new product development. Among them one of the most important factors for success will be strategic management of development process for a new product. First the development process for a new product in domestic restaurant business is improvement of existing product quality or extension of a product line. Second, the study found that there is a strong relationship between the development strategy.for a new product and its outcome. The more focused a product becomes in cost efficiency and customer relations, the better reflected the financial and non financial outcome can be in analysis. Third, financial outcome tends to be considered more than non financial outcome on deciding success of the new product development. Fourth, the study indicates that there is a direct relationship between financial non financial outcome analysis and success of new product development.

비대면 환경에서 제품자료관리 시스템 기반 협동제품개발 실습과제 운영 사례 (Case of Collaborative Product Development Practice based on Product Data Management System in Non-face-to-face Environment)

  • This study attempted non-face-to-face collaborative product development practice that can respond to the spread of COVID-19 by expanding existing product data management system-based product development practice. For the complete non-face-to-face product development practice, it utilized prototype development using a 3D paper model, an online class management system and social media for classes and meetings. As a result of applying the non-face-to-face method, product developments of 26 practice teams have been completed without any failures. Therefore, through this study, the author can confirm that it is possible to provide the complete non-face-to-face collaborative product development practice based on product data management systems.

제품자료 객체를 이용한 설계자 네트워크 분석 (Analysis of Networks among Design Engineers Using Product Data Objects)

  • This study proposes a methodology to analyse social networks among participating design engineers during product development projects. The proposed methodology enables product development managers or the participating design engineers to make a proper decision on product development considering the performance of participating design engineers. It considers a product development environment where an integrated product data management (PDM) system manages the product development data and associated product development processes consistently in its database, and all the design engineers share the product development data in the PDM database for their activities in the product development project. It provides a novel approach to build social networks among design engineers from an operational product development data in the PDM database without surveys or monitoring participating engineers. It automatically generates social networks among the design engineers from the product data and relationships specified by the participants during the design activities. It allows analysts to gather operational data for their analysis without additional efforts for understanding complex and unstructured product development processes. This study also provides a set of measures to evaluate the social networks. It will show the role and efficiency of each design engineers in the social network. To show the feasibility of the approach, it suggests an architecture of social network analysis (SNA) system and implemented it with a research-purpose PDM system and R, a statistical software system. A product configuration management process with synthetical example data is applied to the SNA system and it shows that the approach enables analysts to evaluate current position of design engineers in their social networks.
