  • Fashion professionals these days agree that changes in the fashion business are essential and highly value creativity as a genuine source for generating new ideas in fashion products as well as fashion business practices. As fashion professionals deal with problems of which solutions do not exist or that need innovative solutions for brand or product differentiation in the fast-paced environments, interest in creativity and creative problem solving in the field has increased; therefore, fashion educators have realized that there has been an increasing need for incorporating creativity or creative problem solving into the fashion curriculum. In this study, the researcher intended to review previous research on the use of creative problem solving in classrooms in various disciplines including the field of fashion education to provide insights and suggestions for fashion educators to integrate creative problem solving into the fashion education curriculum. Previous attempts to apply creative problem solving to solve issues in fashion classrooms have mostly limited to promoting divergent thinking techniques. It is suggested for fashion educators as well as fashion students to consider creative problem solving as a process consisting of the four distinct stages in which both divergent and convergent thinking techniques should be properly utilized stimulating various thinking strategies.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of socioeconomic status and the children's sex on mothers'teaching strategies and their children's responses during a cooperative problem-solving task. The subjects were 15 higher SES mothers and their 5-years-old children dyads. The mothers' teaching strategies and their children's responses were videotaped during a cooperative problem solving task and analyze using a scheme developed by Kermani and Brenner. The results of this study were as follows. First, the mothers with higher SES were more likely to promote 'independence' and less likely to 'verbal prompt'direct performance' than the mothers with lower SES. Second, the children from higher SES families were more likely to refuse their mothers' assistance. Third, the mothers of boys were more likely to use the 'direct teaching'and 'modify'strategies and less likely to use 'independence promoting'strategy than the mothers of girls. Finally, girls were more likely than boys to ask questions for assistance or assurance.

  • The purpose of the present study was to investigate the relationship between social cognition (interpersonal problem-solving ability) and social competence. Subjects were 142 male and 148 female fifth graders randomly selected from two elementary schools located in Seoul and their fathers. The children and fathers were administered the Means-Ends Interpersonal Problem-Solving (MEPS) test and the Social Competence Scales based on Choi's inventory(1992). The results indicated significant positive correlations between two subvariables (capability and leadership) of social competence and MEPS. Girls showed significantly higher MEPS scores than boys in the variables of overall problem solving, effective problem solving, and dependent strategy.

  • In this paper we describe Task-Based Problem Solving Adapters (TPSAs) for modeling a humam solution (through activity-centered analysis) to a software solution (in form of computer-based artifact). TPSAs are derived from the problem solving pattern or consistent problem solving structures/strategies employed by practitioners while designing solutions to complex problems. The adapters developed by us lead toward human-centeredness in their design and underpinning that help us to address the pragmatic task constraints through a range of technologies like neural networks, fuzzy logic, and genetic algorithms. We also outline an example of applying the TPSAs to develop a working system for assisting sales engineers of an electrical manufacturing firm in preparing indent and monitoring the status of orders in the company.

  • This paper compares and analyzes mathematics teachers' understanding of students' mathematical comprehension after experiences with the Cognitively Guided Instruction (CGI) or the Development of Mathematical Ideas (DMI) teaching strategies. This report sheds light on current issues confronted by the educational system in the context of mathematics teaching and learning. In particular, the declining rate of mathematical literacy among adolescents is discussed. Moreover, examples of CGI and DMI teaching strategies are presented to focus on the impact of these teaching styles on student-centered instruction, teachers' belief, and students' mathematical achievement, conceptual understanding and word problem solving skills. Hence, with a gradual enhancement of reformed ways of teaching mathematics in schools and the reported increase in student achievement as a result of professional development with new teaching strategies, teacher professional development programs that emphasize teachers' understanding of students' mathematical comprehension is needed rather than the currently dominant traditional pedagogy of direct instruction with a focus on teaching problem solving strategies.

  • In channels of distribution, buyers and vendors are often in conflict. In order 새 resolve conflicts, they usually use three types of strategies: problem solving, compromise and aggressive. Previous studies have focused on the choice of these three strategies. Nevertheless, it is unknown whether the strategies chosen in the early stage are maintained or changed over time. This articles main focus in on testing how the strategies are being affected by conflict resolution processed. Based on the literature review, six hypotheses are formulated. Data obtained from sixty-eight buyers of four different department stores are analyzed. Three hypotheses are fully accepted, two are partially accepted and one is rejected. Problem solving strategy and compromise strategy are either maintained or changed, but aggressive strategy is maintained, not changed. Since the nature of this study is exploratory, more empirical research is urgently needed.
