  • In this paper we present an application to airfoil design of an optimum design method based on optimal control theory. The method used here transforms the design problem by way of a change of variable into an optimal control problem for a distributed system with Neumann boundary control. This results in a set of variational inequalities which is solved by adding a penalty term to the differential equation. This si inturn solved by a finite element method.

  • The robust control problem of the linear systems with uncertainty is classified as the robust stability problem guaranteeing the stability and the robust performance problem guaranteeing the disired performance. In this paper, we considered the robust performance analysis problem, which find the upper buund of the quadratic performance of the uncertain linear system, and the robust guaranteed performance controller design problem which design a controller guaranteeing the desired quadratic performance. At first, we treated the analysis problem and presented the two results; one is dependent on the performance of the nominal system and another is independent on this. And we treated the design method guaranteeing the desired performance for the uncertain linear systems, Finally, we show the usefulness of our results by numerical examples.

  • A network design problem (NDP) is to find a design parameter to optimize the performance of transportation system. This paper presents a modified NDP, called target-oriented NDP, which contains a target that we try to arrive in real world, and also proposes a solution algorithm. Unlike general NDP which seeks an optimal value to minimize or to maximize objective function of the system, in target-oriented NDP traffic manager or operator can set a target level prior and then try to find an optimal design variable to attain this goal. A simple example for mode choice problem is given to test the model.

  • The conceptual design of a rotorcraft system involves many different analysis disciplines. The decomposition of such a system into several subsystems can make analysis and design more efficient in terms of the total computation time. Adaptive parallel decomposition makes the structure of the overall design problem suitable to apply the multidisciplinary design optimization methodologies and it can exploit parallel computing. This study proposes a decomposition method which adaptively determines the number and sequence of analyses in each sub-problem corresponding to the available number of processors in parallel. A rotorcraft design problem is solved and as a result, the adaptive parallel decomposition method shows better performance than other previous methods for the selected design problem.

  • In this paper, an optimum design problem for endosseous implant in dentistry is studied to find best implant design. An optimum design problem is formulated to reduce stresses arising at the cortical as well as cancellous bones, in which sufficient design parameters are chosen fur design definition that encompasses major implants in popular use. Optimization at once (OAO) with the large number of design variables, however, causes too costly solution or even failure to converge. A concept of multilevel optimization (MLO) is employed to this end, which is to group the design variables of similar nature, solve the sub-problem of smaller size fur each group in sequence, and this is iterated until convergence. Each sub-problem is solved based on the response surface method (RSM) due to its efficiency for small sized problem. Favorable solution is obtained by the MLO, which is compared to both solutions made by RSM and sequential quadratic programming (SQP) in the OAO problem.

  • In this paper, the authors propose a new approach to control problem of the marine vessels which are moored or controlled by actuators. The vessel control problem in the specified area is called a DPS (Dynamic Positioning System). The main objective of this paper is to obtain more useful control design method for DPS. In this problem, a complicate fact is control allocation which is a numerical method for distributing the control signal to the controlled system. For this, many results have been given and verified by other researchers using two individual processes. It means that the controller design and control allocation design process are carried out individually. In this paper, the authors give more sophisticated design solution on this issue. In which the controller design and control allocation problem are unified by a robust controller design problem. In other word, the stability of the closed-loop system, control performance and allocation problem are unified by an LMI (Linear Matrix Inequality) constraint based on $H_2/H_{\infty}$ mixed design framework. The usefulness of proposed approach is verified by simulation with a supply vessel model and found works well.

  • The purpose of this research was developing an integrated way to solve two typical tolerance optimization problem i.e. optimal tolerance allotment and design centering. A new problem definition design centering-tolerance allotment problem (DCTA) was proposed here for the first time and solved. Genetic algorithm and coarse Monte Carlo simulation were used to solve the stochastic optimization problem. Optimal costs were compared with the costs from the previous optimization strategies Significant cost reductions were achieved by DCTA scheme.

  • Multidisciplinary design optimization based on independent subspaces (MDOIS) is a simple and practical method that can be applied to the practical engineering MDO problems. However, the current version of MDOIS does not handle the common design variables. A new version of MDOIS is proposed and named as MDOIS/2006. It is a two-level MDO method while the original MDOIS is a single-level method. At first, system analysis is performed to solve the coupling in the analysis. If the termination criteria are not satisfied, each discipline solves its own design problem. Each discipline in the lower level solves the problem with common design variables while they are constrained by equality constraints. In the upper level, the common design variables of related disciplines are determined by using the optimum sensitivity of the objective function. To validate MDOIS/2006, mathematical problem and NASA test bed problem are solved. The results are compared with those from other MDO methods. Finally, MDOIS/2006 is applied to flow patterner design and shows that it can be successfully applied to the practical engineering MDO problem.

  • As a result of rapid advances in communication technology, fiber optics have begun to be adopted in most telecommunication systems 3s an economic choice Due to the trend of evolution toward broadband communication network with fiber optics and electronic devices. the network design problem for broadband communication has been received a great deal of research attention recently. In this paper, we address a topological design problem for broadband local access network with uncertain demands, which has received surprisingly little attention so far. in our problem, we select a set of hubs and links for constructing network expected penalty cost for the amount of undersupplied In addition to the usual cost terms of the fixed demand problem Our problem can be approximated as a mixed 0-1 integer programming problem by using Szwarc’s linear approximation technique. Then the problem is transformed successfully into a version of classical network design model. Some computational experiments for the model and concluding remarks are described.
