  • In this work, water-soluble and blue-emitting carbon nanodots (CDs) were synthesized from apple peels for the first time via one-step hydrothermal method. The synthetic route is facile, green, economical and viable. The as-prepared CDs were characterized thoroughly by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), X-ray photoelectron (XPS), fluorescence and UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy in terms of their morphology, surface functional groups and optical properties. The results show that these CDs possessed ultrasmall size, good dispersivity, and high tolerance to pH, ionic strength and continuous UV irradiation. Significantly, the CDs had fast and reversible response towards temperature, and the accurate linear relationship between fluorescence intensity and temperature was used to design a novel nanothermometer in a broad temperature range from 5 to $65^{\circ}C$ facilely. In addition, the fluorescence intensity of CDs was observed to be quenched immediately by Cr(VI) ions based on the inner filter effect. A low-cost Cr(VI) ions sensor was proposed employing CDs as fluorescent probe, and it displayed a wide linear range from 0.5 to $200{\mu}M$ with a detection limit of $0.73{\mu}M$. The practicability of the developed Cr(VI) sensor for real water sample assay was also validated with satisfactory recoveries.

  • Targeting the cystine/glutamate exchange transporter, system xc-, is a promising anticancer strategy that induces ferroptosis, which is a distinct form of cell death mediated by iron-dependent lipid peroxidation. The concentration of ⳑ-cystine in culture medium is higher than the physiological level. This study was aimed to evaluate the effects of ⳑ-cystine concentration on the efficacy of ferroptosis inducers in hepatocellular carcinoma cells. This study showed that treatment with sulfasalazine or erastin, a system xc- inhibitor, decreased the viability of Huh6 and Huh7 cells in a dose-dependent manner, and the degree of growth inhibition was greater in medium containing a physiological ⳑ-cystine concentration of 83 µM than in commercial medium with a concentration of 200 µM ⳑ-cystine. However, RSL3, a glutathione peroxidase 4 inhibitor, decreased cell viability to a similar extent in media containing both ⳑ-cystine concentrations. Sulfasalazine and erastin significantly increased the percentages of propidium iodide-positive cells in media with 83 µM ⳑ-cystine, but not in media with 200 µM ⳑ-cystine. Sulfasalazine- or erastin-induced accumulation of lipid peroxidation as monitored by C11-BODIPY probe was higher in media with 83 µM ⳑ-cystine than in media with 200 µM ⳑ-cystine. In contrast, the changes in the percentages of propidium iodide-positive cells and lipid peroxidation by RSL3 were similar in both media. These results showed that sulfasalazine and erastin, but not RSL3, were efficacious under conditions of physiological ⳑ-cystine concentration, suggesting that medium conditions would be crucial for the design of a bioassay for system xc- inhibitors.

  • The purpose of this study was to measure the oral temperature, skin temperature, and subjective discomfort according to the application time of ice bag on thigh, head, and abdomen. This study was also intended to suggest nursing principles about ice bag application by exploring the recovery time of skin temperature after the removal of ice bag. The design of this study was $8{\times}3$ factorial design with one sample repeated measure. Here, the application time of ice bag(criteria, 5min, 10min, 20min, 30min, 40min, 50min, 60min) and the application site of ice bag(thigh, head, abdomen) were independent variables. The subjects were 10 university woman students, and data collection was made from July, 1 to August 30, 1992. Rubber ice bag halfly filled with ice was covered with towel and applied on thigh, head and abdomen in other three days. Before applying the ice bag, oral temperature and skin temperature were checked for criteria. After ice bag was applied, skin temperature, oral temperature and VAS score were checked at first 5 minutes elapsed, and every 10 minutes until 60 minutes. After that, ice bag was removed, and oral temperature and skin temperature were also measured every ten minutes until 60 minutes. In this study, skin temperature and core temperature were measured by thermistor probe, and subjective discomfort was measured by 200mm VAS (Visual Analogue Scale). Some of the findings were as follows : 1. There were significant differences in skin temperature among the three application sites of ice bag as time go by. It was most decreased to $15.87^{\circ}C$ in thigh, and $19.47^{\circ}C$ in abdomen at 50 minutes after the application of ice bag, whereas $26.1^{\circ}C$ at 40 minutes in head. Before the application of ice bag, skin temperature showed significant differences in three sites, so that they were compared after the criteria was covariated. In other words, there was significantly more decrease of skin temperature in thigh and abdomen than head, after ice bag was applied for 20 minutes and more. 2. There was no significant difference in core temperature among the three application sites of ice bag during the time of application 3. There was no significant difference in subjective discomfort (VAS) among the three application sites of ice bag. 4. After the removal of ice bag, the recovery of skin temperature was significantly different in three sites during first 30 minutes. In head, skin temperature came up to criteria at 30 minutes after the removal of ice bag, but it was not recovered In thigh and abdomen even 60 minutes elapsed. 5. After the removal of ice bag, there was no significant difference in oral temperature among the three application sites of ice bag. 6. There was significant correlation between the skin temperature and VAS score only in thigh. In conclusion, it is suggested that head in more suitable site for the application of ice bag if it is used for the relief of fever or pain. When we apply ice bag on thigh or abdomen for the relief of pain, careful attention is required.

  • In this paper, two kinds of E-plane microstrip-to-waveguide transitions are optimally designed and fabricated for combining output power from multiple small-power amplifiers in a WR-28 waveguide because conventional K connectors cause unnecessary insertion loss and adaptor loss. The transition design is based on target specifications such as a center frequency of 35 GHz, bandwidth of ${\pm}500MHz$, 0.1 dB insertion loss and 20 dB return loss. Performance variation caused by mechanical tolerance and assembly deviation is fully evaluated by three dimensional electromagnetic simulation. The fabricated back-to-back transitions with 16 mm and 26.57 mm interstage microstrip lines show insertion loss per transition of ~0.1 dB at 35 GHz and average 0.2 dB over full Ka band. Also the back-to-back transition shows return loss greater than 15 dB, which implies that the transition itself has return loss better than 20 dB.

  • This study was conducted with the aim of verifying the effects of restaurant video taping and job communication drawing board production activities on cooking job skills of high school students with intellectual disabilities. The study participants consisted of three students with intellectual disabilities enrolled in the high school course of a special school, and the experimental environment consisted of a kitchen in the restaurant and a classroom in the special school. For the research design, the technique of multiple probe design across subjects according to a single subject research was used. The intervention program consisting of independent variables was applied as a linkage procedure in which study participants videotaped the kitchen's environmental facilities, tools, materials, and staff perform cooking job skills and then taped data from the classroom scene on a job communication drawing board. Cooking job skills consisting of dependent variables are defined as the performance of research participants cooking gimbap directly in the kitchen of the restaurant. As a result of the study, it was found that participants effectively acquired, maintained, and generalized cooking job skills through intervention programs.

  • To probe the star formation in local and early Universe, the NISS with a capability of imaging spectroscopy in the near-infrared is being developed by KASI. The main scientific targets are nearby galaxies, galaxy clusters, star-forming regions and low background regions. The off-axis optical design of the NISS with 15cm aperture was optimized to obtain a wide field of view (FoV) of $2deg.{\times}2deg.$ as well as a wide spectral coverage from 0.9 to $3.8{\mu}m$. The opto-mechanical structure was designed to be safe enough to endure in both the launching condition and the space environment. The dewar will operate $1k{\times}1k$ infrared sensor at 80K stage. The NISS will be launched in 2017 and explore the large areal near-infrared sky up to $200deg.^2$ in order to get both spatial and spectral information for astronomical objects. As an extension of the NISS, KASI is planning to participate in a new small space mission together with NASA. The promising candidate, SPHEREx (Spectro-Photometer for the History of the Universe Epoch of Reionization, and Ices Explorer) is an all-sky survey satellite designed to reveal the origin of the Universe and water in the planetary systems and to explore the evolution of galaxies. Though the survey concept is similar to that of the NISS, the SPHEREx will perform the first near-infrared all-sky imaging spectroscopic survey with the wider spectral range from 0.7 to $5{\mu}m$ and the wider FoV of $3.5deg.{\times}7deg.$ Here, we report the current status of the NISS and introduce new mission for the near-infrared imaging spectroscopic survey.

  • The objective of this study was to evaluate the potential of an alumninosilicate clay, marketed under the trade name Biotite V, to improve growing-finishing pig performance and to determine its effects on nutrient digestibility and excretion. Sixty crossbred pigs (22.3${\pm}2.7kg$, Camborough 15 Line female${\times}$Canabred sire) were assigned on the basis of sex, weight and litter to one of four dietary treatments in a $2{\times}4$ (two sexes and four treatments) factorial design experiment. The experimental diets were based on barley and soybean meal and contained 0, 0.25, 0.5 or 0.75% biotite during the growing period (22.3-60.5 kg) and 0, 0.5, 1.0 or 1.5% biotite during the finishing period (60.5-110.3 kg). Each pig was allowed access to its own individual feeder for 30 min twice daily (07:00 and 15:00 h). Individual pig body weight, feed consumption and feed conversion were recorded weekly. The pigs were slaughtered at a commercial abattoir when they reached an average weight of 110.3 kg. Carcass weight was recorded and dressing percentage calculated. Carcass fat and lean measurements were obtained with a Destron PG 100 probe between the 3rd and 4th last ribs, 70 mm of the midline. Total tract digestibility coefficients for dry matter, energy, nitrogen and phosphorus were determined using three males and three females per treatment starting at an average weight of $52.2{\pm}3.8kg$. These pigs were housed under identical conditions as those used in the growing stage and were fed the same diets modified only by the addition of 0.5% chromic oxide as a digestibility marker. Over the entire experimental period (22.3-110.3 kg), daily gain was unaffected (p>0.05) by the inclusion of biotite in the diet. There was a cubic response for feed intake (p=0.06) and a quadratic response (p=0.07) for feed conversion due to biotite. Feeding biotite produced no significant (p>0.05) linear or quadratic effects on any of the carcass traits measured. Dry matter digestibility decreased linearly (p=0.02) with increasing levels of biotite in the diet. However, digestibility coefficients for energy, nitrogen and phosphorus were unaffected (p<0.05) by biotite inclusion. Lactobacilli and enterobacteria numbers were unaffected by inclusion of biotite while Salmonella was not detected in any of the fecal samples. The overall results of this experiment indicate that biotite inclusion did not reduce fecal excretion of nitrogen or phosphorus and failed to improve nutrient digestibility. Neither growth rate nor carcass quality was improved while a modest improvement in feed conversion was observed at lower levels of inclusion. Based on the results of this experiment, it would be difficult to justify the routine inclusion of biotite in diets fed to grower-finisher pigs. Whether or not a greater response would have been obtained with pigs of a lower health status is unknown.

  • Photoacoustic imaging is a useful tool for the diagnosis of atherosclerosis because it is capable of providing anatomical and pathological information at the same time. A photoacoustic signal detector is a pivotal element to achieve high spatial resolution, so that it should have broadband spectrum with a high center frequency. Since a photoacoustic imaging probe is directly inserted into blood vessel to diagnose atherosclerosis, the total size of the photoacoustic signal detector should be less than 1 mm. The main purpose of this paper is to demonstrate that PVDF can be used as an active material for the photoacoustic signal detector with a high frequency and broadband characteristic. The photoacoustic signal detector developed in this study was a single element ultrasound transducer with an aperture of $0.5{\times}0.5mm$ and the total size of 1 mm. In the design stage, the natural focal depth was adjusted for an effective focal area to cover the region of interest, i.e., 1~5 mm in depth. This was because geometrical focusing could not be used due to the small aperture. Through a pulse-echo test, it was ascertained that the developed photoacoustic signal detector has the -6 dB bandwidth ranging between 40.1 and 112.8 MHz and the center frequency of 76.83 MHz.

  • This thesis examines the effects of entrepreneurship on the career maturity of middle school students through moderating the effects of 5 personality factors. For that purpose, we have conducted a survey for 500 middle school students. We measured three aspects suggested by Kang Byung Ho (2011) for the entrepreneurship. The career maturity test for middle and high school students(Yim un and so on, 2012) to test the career maturity of middle school students and measure items suggested by Lee Tae Gyu and Yun Hye Hyun(2008) to test the five-factor model as a tool. The results were acquired using an SPSS 22.0 program to analyze the research results as follows. Hypothesis 1. 'How much entrepreneurship has an effect on the career maturity of middle school students?' This has shown that the higher the entrepreneurship is, the higher the career attitude and career probing ability is. At the same time, the risk-taking in entrepreneurship has no significant effect on the career preparation action. Hypothesis 2. 'The five-factor model will affect the controlling of the relationship between entrepreneurship and the career maturity (career attitude, career probing ability and career preparation action) of middle school students.' This five-factor model has affected the relationship between the entrepreneurship and career attitude, the sub-area of career maturity. However, it has not affected the career probing ability and career preparation action, another sub-area of the career maturity. This study is useful because we have probed the effect of entrepreneurship on the career maturity of middle school students and the control-effect of the five-factor model. We suggest that this study will give a chance to middle school students to realize their career, to probe and design their career and to cultivate their ability to live a active life in 21th century.

  • The gist of a scene can be identified in less than 100msec, and violation in the gist can influence the way to allocate attention to the parts of a scene. In other words, people tend to allocate more attention to the object(s) inconsistent with the gist of a scene and to have better memory of them. To investigate the effects of contextual consistency on the attention allocation and object memory, two experiments were conducted. In both experiments, a $3{\times}2$ factorial design was used with scene presentation time(2s, 5s, and 10s) as a between-subject factor and object-background contextual consistency(consistent, inconsistent) as a within-subject factor. In Experiment 1, eye movements were recorded while the participants viewed line-drawing scenes. The results showed that the eye movement patterns were different according to whether the scenes were consistent or not. Context-inconsistent objects showed faster initial fixation indices, longer fixation times, more frequent returns than context-consistent ones. These results are entirely consistent with those of previous studies. If an object is identified as inconsistent with the gist of a scene, it attracts attention. Furthermore, the inconsistent objects and their locations in the scenes were recalled better than the consistent ones and their locations. Experiment 2 was the same as Experiment 1 except that a dual-task paradigm was used to reduce the amount of attention to allocate to the objects. Participants had to detect the positions of the probe occurring every second while they viewed the scenes. Nonetheless, the result patterns were the same as in Experiment 1. Even when the amount of attention to allocate to the scene contents was reduced, the same effects of contextual inconsistency were observed. These results indicate that the object-background contextual consistency has a strong influence on the way of allocating attention and the memory of objects in a scene.
