The traditional prestressed concrete composite box-girders with corrugated steel webs have several drawbacks such as large deflection and potential local buckling. In this study, two methods were investigated to optimize and improve the prestressed concrete composite box-girders with corrugated steel webs. The first method was to replace the concrete bottom slab with a steel plate and the second method was to support the concrete bottom slab on the steel flanges. The behavior of the prestressed concrete composite box-girders with corrugated steel webs with either method was studied by experiments on three specimens. The test results showed that behavior of the optimized and upgraded prestressed concrete composite box-girders with corrugated steel webs, including ultimate bearing capacity, flexural stiffness, and crack resistance, is greatly improved. In addition, the influence of different shear connectors, including perfobond leisten (PBL) and stud shear connectors, on the behavior of prestressed concrete composite box-girders with corrugated steel webs was studied. The results showed that PBL shear connectors can greatly improve the ultimate bearing capacity, flexural stiffness and crack resistance property of the prestressed concrete composite box-girders with corrugated steel webs. However, for the efficiency of prestressing introduced into the girder, the PBL shear connectors do not perform as well as the stud shear connectors.
Prestressed composite girders provide efficient composite action by applying prestress to the sub-encasing concrete. In this study, an enhanced prestressed composite girder with forms suspended from the steel girder is utilized. Long-term behavior of the prestressed composite girder is estimated using age-adjusted effective modulus method, which is verified experimentally using measurements obtained from an in-service bridge. Then, parametric study is carried out to investigate the influences caused by ambient temperature, humidity, prestressing and concrete casting date.
Damaged steel-concrete composite girders can be repaired and retrofitted by epoxy-bonded carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) sheets to the critical areas of tension flanges. This paper presents the results of a study on the behavior of damaged steel-concrete composite girders repaired with CFRP sheets under static loading. A total of seven composite girders made of I20A steel sections and 80mm-thick by 900mm-wide concrete slabs were prepared and tested. CFRP sheets and prestressed CFRP sheets were used to repair the specimens. The specimens lost the cross-sectional area of their tension flanges with 30%, 50% and 100%. The results showed that CFRP sheets had no significant effect on the yield loads of strengthened composite girders, but had significant effect on the ultimate loads. The yield loads, elastic stiffness, and ultimate bearing capacities of strengthened composite girders had been changed as a result of prestressed CFRP sheets, the utilization ratio of CFRP sheets could be effectively improved by applying prestress to CFRP sheets. Both the yield loads and ultimate bearing capacities had been changed as a result of steel beam's flange damage level and CFRP sheets could cover the girders' shortage of bearing capacity with 30% and 50% flange damage, respectively.
The age-adjusted effective modulus method has been known to provide more precise assessment than the traditional Yassumi method for long-term behavior estimation of prestressed composite girders. The age-adjusted effective modulus method, however, involves complicated calculation, thereby making the Yassumi method more prevalent in actual design. This study presents rational approaches to revise creep coefficients for the Yassumi method by using parametric study results obtained from the age-adjusted effective modulus method.

There has been a strong demand on more economic and lower depth girder bridges for short and medium span range, PRECOM, which is a new type steel-concrete composite girder, has been developed to realize a more economic bridge system with a lower depth girder. In the PRECOM girder bridge, a steel plate girder is simply supported and then concrete form is hung to girder. Thus, the self-weight of the concrete is loaded to the steel girder. To increase the resistance of concrete in the lower casing against tensile stress, compressive force is introduced by prestressed tendon To evaluate the manufacturability and performances of the completed bridge, four 15-m girders and a bridge specimen with two 20m girders wvere constructed. The camber during the construction and introduction of an appropriate compressive force was evaluated. Dynamic data were obtained through the modal testing of the completed girders. Static loading test was also conducted to examine cracks and evaluate the decrease in stiffness and failure behavior under extreme conditions.
The goal of this study is to develop an equivalent fatigue load model for prestressed concrete composite girder bridges in Korea. To meet this goal, the probabilistic characteristics of traffics which cause fatigue damage in bridges are properly modeled. An equivalent fatigue load inodel for prestressed concrete composite girder bridges with constant. amplitude and frequency is established. The model proposed in this paper is very simple to use and gives fairly good results.

Recently, fatigue problem become a critical issue in the design of prestressed concrete bridges due to the increase of traffic volumes and use of high-strength materials. Most existing studies are mainly concerned with the fatigue behavior of component materials only such as concrete, reinforcing bars, and prestressing steels and few studies exist that deals with the fatigue behavior of bridge members. An improved analytic formulation for both uncracked and cracked prestressed concrete composite section with cyclic creep effect is developed to take into account the change of neutral axis with crack propagation. The procedure also enables to investigate serviceability limit states, deflection and crack width. The present study allows more realistic analysis and design of prestressed concrete composite girder bridges under fatigue loadings.
The paper presents a review of the application of the newly proposed mixed finite element model for seismic simulation of different types of composite frame structures. To evaluate the performance of the element, a comparison with displacement-based and force-based models is conducted. The study revealed that the mixed model is superior to the others in terms of both speed of convergence and numerical stability, and is therefore considered the most practical approach for modeling of composite structures. In this model, the element is derived using independent force and displacement shape functions. The nonlinear response of the frame element is based on the section discretization into fibers with uniaxial material models. The interfacial behavior is modeled using an inelastic interface element. Numerical examples to clarify the advantages of the model are presented for the following structural applications: anchored reinforcing bar problems, composite steel-concrete girders with deformable shear connectors, beam on elastic foundation elements, R/C girders strengthened with FRP sheets, R/C beam-columns with bond-slip, and prestressed concrete girders. These studies confirmed that the model represents a major advancement over existing elements in simulating the inelastic behavior of composite structures.

The development of external prestressing methods has been one of the major trends in the concrete bridge constructions over the past decades. One of the promising methods to enhance the flexural strength of a externally prestressed girder is to place the tendons with large eccentricities. The analysis and design of composite girders prestressed by external tendons involve difficulties related mainly to the position of anchorages and the construction sequences. This study was conducted on the concrete bridges reinforced by the continuous girders and the external prestressing. The test results in this study showed that the external prestressing of a composite girder increased the range of the elastic behavior, reduced deflections, increased ultimate strength, and added to the redundancy by providing the multiple stress paths.

The analysis and design of composite girders prestressed by external tendons involve difficulties related to the position of anchorages and the construction sequences. In this paper, the efficiency of the external tendon profiles and the position of anchorages in examined for the internal and external prestressing of statically indeterminate structures. It is shown that strengthening of a prestressed girder can be accomplished using a variety of methods; bonded external prestressing, tendon replacement and unbonded external prestressing.
