  • We have evaluated an usefulness and association between serum levels of gamma-glutamyltranspeptiase (GGT) and metabolic syndrome (MS) in 40-year-old men and women. The prevalence of MS in men (11.8%) was higher than that of women (4.0%). Serum levels of GGT were higher in men and women with MS than in them without MS. In the prevalence of higher serum GGT, men group with MS (35.8%) was greater than women group with MS (22.7%). In the relative risk of MS to an increased level of GGT, women group was higher than men group (about 3 times) (female, OR=7.48 vs male, OR=2.46). The present study reveals that routine check of serum GGT in health examination can be useful for the prevention and management of MS including cardiovascular and/or liver diseases.

  • The efficient safety estimation for a business should analyze an accident data by considering every possible and potential factor. Thus, we consider several factors to build the safety estimation model to meet fairness and rationality. This paper present the yearly statistic data of accident from KOSHA analyze the data by industry, scale, year of service of a employee, age and other factors; build the safety estimation model for the business based on the accident report derived the analysis. The estimation model is established by the weights for accident type, degree, scale, industry, year of service, and age of the employee derived from AHP(Analytic Hierarchy Process).

  • The objectives of this study are to investigate the measurements of clothing for the handicapped compared to that of the normal, and to present the basic data to make clothing for the handicapped who has specific needs. Questionnaires were administered to 927 Cerebral Palsies on height, weight, chest circumference, sitting height, and to 70 handicapped people using a supporting parasite on 18 measurement items. The results show that height, weight , and sitting height of the handicapped are smaller than those of the normal of equal age except for chest circumference. And, the values of the items for the lower half are smaller than the normal of equal age and those for the upper half, especially the items for the shoulder and arm, are greater. Compared to the values of the normal in the three standad size charts, the size charts using height and chest circumference are unsuitable to the handicapped, and the size chart using hip circumference is approximately suitable.

  • The classic triad of diagnostic signs of submucosal cleft palate which may be present are: 1) bifid uvula 2) short palate with no muscle in the midline and 3) hard palate with a submucous notching defect in the posterior midline. The treatment of submucous cleft palate are V-Y push back palatorrhaphy, and superior based pharyngoplasty implant in the posterior pharynx. The best speech results were in those children operated upon in the younger age group (especially at or before 2 years of age), thus pointing up the importance of early diagnosis.

  • The aging is related to numerous changes in our body system which declines functional ability. The functional ability in advanced age can be evaluated by the 4 components of fitness (cardiorespiratory endurance, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility and body composition). The understanding and knowledge of changing 4 components of fitness and the role of exercise on the process of aging is of paramount importance. Despite exercise and physical activity have been shown to delay the process of aging, the exercise guidelines and recommendations for old adults are not well published. This review is to presents the age-related changes in each component of fitness and to present current guidelines and recommendations for exercise in older adults.

  • The purpose of this study was to explore the effect of performance of living proprieties on family adaptability and self-esteem, centering on the married men and women residing in the city of Seoul. 220 respondents were randomly selected in July 2000 for the present research. The results of this study were as follows : First, the performance of living proprieties revealed a relatively high level and was shown a significant difference by sex, age, family type, religion, the number of children, experience of propriety education, value orientation, and the degree of communication. Second, family adaptability revealed a relatively high level and was shown a significant difference by family type, experience of propriety education, and the degree of communication. Self-esteem was shown a significant difference by the number of children and degree of communication. Third, background variable (age), the performance of living proprieties (communication manner, family decorum, social etiquette), and family adaptability had a significant effect on self-esteem. This implies that the performance of living proprieties rather than socio-demographic variables has a positive effect on self-esteem.

  • Seven patients [six cases of left atrial myxoma, one case of right atrial myxoma] from 24 to 66 years of age [4 male and 3 female, mean age 48 years] underwent excision of atrial myxoma between 1982 and 1989 at Keimyung University Dongsan Medical Center. All patients presented with congestive heart failure, six with cardiac murmur, three with syncope, two with sinus tachycardia, one each with sinus arrhythmia, atrial fibrillation, pleural effusion, peripheral embolization. Symptoms were present from 1 month to 8 years before operation [mean 28 months], All tumors originated from atrial septum and pedunculated. The myxomas were successfully removed in all patients, either shaving them from atrial septum [n=3] or by excising a portion at normal atrial septum with tumor [n=4]. One case was replaced mitral valve with carbomedics-31mm due to severe mitral regurgitation. Follow up is current. No recurrent myxoma has been identified clinically or by echocardiography. In this series, excellent results were obtained by simple excision of the tumor, with or without a margin of normal atrial septum.

  • The purpose of the present study is to determine variations in synthesis of DNA in the nuclei of various elements of the golden hamster (Mesocricetus auratus) placenta with increasing gestational age from the eighth day post coitus to parturition. The method employed for such determination was autoradiography following injection of pregnant animals with tritiated thymidine. From the results reported, the following points are concluded. The mitotic activities of the endodermal cells of the visceral yolk sac and of the parietal yolk sac, the trophoblastic cells of the labyrinth and the trophospongium and the giant cells were decreased with increasing gestational age, The placentation was nearly completed by day 13 of pregnancy and the increase in size of labyrinth was by appositional growth from the trophospongial cells. It was considered that the inner trophoblastic cells in the vicinity of the fetal blood vessels were originated from the pure chorion. The interrelation among the various cells and the polyploidal giant cells in the placenta were discussed.

  • Investment in research and development (R&D) is critical in the information technology (IT) firms, where newer and better technology is a quintessential goal that directly affects innovation and competitive advantage. This study investigates how R&D investment influences firm performance and value, and how the effect of R&D investment differs between IT hardware and software firms. We also analyze the relationship between firm age and R&D investment in order to identify learning effects on continuous R&D investment. The empirical investigation in this study, based on longitudinal archival data from 2001 to 2010, found a significant effect of R&D investment on firm performance in IT firms. Further, this study demonstrates causal relationship between firm age, and verifies that learning effects are present in R&D investment. Moreover, the results are found to differ between IT hardware and IT software firms.

  • Recent observations on the double red clumps in the bulge validate the close connection in stellar populations between Galactic globular clusters (GCs) and the Milky Way (MW) bulge. Intriguingly, diverse phenomena observed in early-type galaxies (ETGs) and their GC systems are also indicating the similarities with Galactic GCs with multiple populations. Here, we present the population synthesis for the Galactic bulge and ETGs using stellar populations observed in the Galactic GCs with multiple populations. Our new models well explain observations of both the MW bulge and ETGs. Also, the inclusion of GC-originated population to the population synthesis model shows substantial impacts on the age-dating of stellar populations. The implication of this result for the interpretation of the formation history and the age-dating of ETGs will be discussed in detail.
