This study investigates working parent stress. This study surveyed 240 working mothers who are raising toddlers and 106 teachers in Seoul, Cyeong-gi, and Incheon. For this study, the Parenting Stress scale developed by Kim & Kang (1997) was used as the instruments for measurement and parental stress. To measure maternal separation anxiety, this study used the Maternal Separation Anxiety Scale (MSAS) developed by Hock (1989), while the Attitude for Occupation scale developed by Farel (1980) was used to measure the attitude for occupation. In addition, the Preschool Adjustment Questionnaire (PAQ) developed by Jewsuwan, Luster and Kostelink (1992), and modified by Oh Chong Eun (2001) were used as the instruments for measurement and adjustment. Data analysis was done using the SPSS WIN 15.0 version and the collected data were subject to a descriptive statistical analysis, one-way ANOVA t-test, and multiple regression analysis. The influential independent variables affecting parenting stress listed in order of significance were maternal attitude for occupation, adjustment of children, maternal anxiety, and income.
Objective: The goal of this study were (1) to examine the type of parental time, (2) to investigate the family's characteristics that affect the parental time types. (3), to identify the differences in time satisfaction and time deficit according to the types of parental time of mothers with preschool children. Methods: The data source for this research was the 2014 Time Use Survey conducted by the Korea National Statistical Office(391 time diaries). Data were analyzed using K-means cluster analysis, multinominal regression, and ANOVA. Results: The results can be summarized as follows. First, parental time was classified into four groups; non-participation, play-centered, physical care-centered, unspecified group. Second, the characteristics of each type depended on children's age, mother's education level, mother's income, and dual earner families. Third, time deficit showed significant differences between play-centered and non-participation type. Conclusion/Implications: Based on the results, implications for policy regarding child care and labor were suggested.
Purpose: This study was conducted to develop and investigate the effect of a combined health promotion program for preschool children and their parents. Methods: Physical examinations were done for 993 preschoolers in 12 preschools. Their parents (n=727) completed a questionnaire on health status and health knowledge of their children and 35 teachers in preschools completed one on health knowledge of preschoolers. Based on the results of the physical examinations and survey, a combined health promotion program was developed. In order to evaluate the program, 35 teachers and 104 parents participated in the program. The effects of the program were tested and health knowledge before and after the program was analyzed. Results: Health knowledge of parents and teachers increased significantly after attending the combined health promotion program. Conclusion: In order to promote the health of preschoolers, parents and teachers need to participate in combined health programs that provide an opportunity for preschoolers to have a physical examination and their parents to learn about the health care for their children.

Objective: This study aimed to examine the longitudinal relations of children's temperamental attributes (i.e., emotionality, activity, and sociability) and maternal responsiveness to overall and specific externalizing/internalizing behavior problems during the preschool period. Methods: Data (N=1,438) from the 4th and 6th wave of Panel Study on Korean Children (PSKC) were used in a series of hierarchical regression analyses. The analyses were conducted to determine the additive and interactive effects of maternal responsiveness and temperamental attributes of children at the age of 3 years on the broadband and narrowband scales of their behavior problems at the age of 5 years. Results: Overall, results confirmed the additive and interactive effects of maternal responsiveness and temperamental attributes on the levels of different domains of behavior problems. Examination of the interactive effects showed that maternal responsiveness was more strongly related to some behavior problems for temperamentally vulnerable children as compared to children with less temperamental vulnerabilities. Conclusion: The findings suggested that the beneficial effects of positive parenting on the development of behavior problems might be more pronounced for temperamentally vulnerable than for less vulnerable children.
The purpose of this study was validate the Preschool and Kindergarten Behavior Scale-2(PKBS-2) and develop the Korean version PKBS-2(K-PKBS-2) through the phases of concept and statistical review. For this purpose, this study conducted PKBS-2 for teachers with 1,119 young children in Jeonbuk province. During the factor structure review, according to the results of exploratory factor analysis, 30 items and 4 factors(social interaction, social cooperation, social compliance, and social independence) in social skills scale and 40 items and 4 sub-factors of 3 factors(internalizing behavior, externalizing behavior, and interpersonal emotional behavior) in problem behavior scale were extracted. In addition, confirmatory factor analysis, the model fits of social skills and problem behavior scales were higher than the original test and very high reliability and internal consistency were produced. During external factor review, convergent validity and discriminant validity were verified. After cultural specificity and cultural universality between PKBS-2 and K-PKBS-2 were discussed, K-PKBS-2 was presented as e scale which is very useful for the screening, prevention, and intervention program plan of challenging behavior behaviors in young children in Korea.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect on pain of distraction with an operating doll in preschool children(3-6 years old) during an IV catheter insertion. Method: The research design was a nonequivalent control group posttest design, and the participants were 22 children in the experimental group, and 23 children in the control group. The children were hospitalized for enteritis and pharyngitis in a university hospital. The subjective pain was measured using FACES Pain Rating Scale by self report, and the pain behavior responses were scored using Procedure Behavior Check List by observing a film of the entire procedure, and changes in pulse and oxygen saturation as the physiological pain responses were measured by pulse oximeter. Data were analyzed with the SPSS Win 10.0 program. Result: The degree of subjective pain, pain behavior responses, and changes in pulse during IV catheter insertion were significantly lower in the experimental group. But there was no significant difference in $O_2$ saturation between the two groups. Conclusion: Distraction using an operating doll was effective in decreasing pain during inserting the IV catheter in preschool children.
This study is aimed at investigating the compensatory education which was already implemented or is being implemented in the U.S.A. and Japan; and at studying the types of programs and their characteristics; and at sounding out the possibilities of the application of such programs in family and social conditions is Korea. In order to achieve the above mentioned objectives, the established items for the study are as follows: (1) Various types of early children's education (2) Programs of compensatory education for the disadvantaged Children (3) Head Start Program, Early Training Project and Montessori School (4) Integrated Preschool Programs (5) Day-Care Center for employed mothers We investigated the various compensatory education programs for the preschool children who are in economically, socially, culturally disadvantaged conditions. Head Start Programs were federally supported programs for preschool children and opened as summer programs in 1965 for the first time. The purpose of Head Start has been to give preschool children the kinds of experiences they need in preparation for school. The Head Start children were found to be significantly better prepared for school than the normal children. However, after six to eight months, their initial advantages had virtually. disappeared and then the simple problem with Head Start and other such programs was that little long-term good could be evidenced unless the high quality educational environment was maintained. Therefore, to solve this problem, three other programs were funded as part of the overall Head Start. These three programs are the Parent-Child Center, Home Start, and the Child and Family Resources Program. The Early Training Project for disadvantaged children was implemented by Klaus and Gray of Peabody College in 1962. The program was a field research study concerned with the development and testing over time of procedures for improving the educability of young children from low income homes. Its major concern was to study whether it was possible to offset the progressive retardation observed in the public schooling careers of children, living in deprived circumstances. Children, who were trained through the Early Training Project were superior to control groups in the test of IQ and vocabulary as well as linguistic abilities, and preparation for reading. This project showed the possibilities which could prevent preschool children from being disadvantaged socially, culturally and mentally. In 1907, Montessori School was established by Maria Montessori in Italy and her school program has been introduced at present to several countries in the world as one compensatory educations. She first began her experimental methods with retarded children, followed by disadvantaged children from the tenements of Rome. The Montessori approach futures a prepared environment and carefully designed, self-correcting materials. The Montessori curriculum presents tastes that feature sequence, order, and regularity, in addition to those that develop motor and sensory skills. She was interested in children's intellectual development and in developing good work habits. One of the latest developed programs for disadvantaged children is "Integrated Preschool Program" which has successfully integrated handicapped and nonhandicapped children. Several studies have showed that handicapped children in integrated school environments are accepted by and interact with their nonhandicapped peers. In fact, this program provides a number of potential, and perhaps opportunities for nonhandicapped children to serve as valuable resources in fostering the development of their handicapped peers. Next we turn to Japanese programs which are divided into two different types. One is Day-Care Center which was established by Child Welfare Law and the other is kindergarten organized by School Education Law. The kindergarten opened in 1876 and it has been part of school systems since 1947 by the implementation of education law, and the Day-Care Center which started in 1890 for the employed mothers. was changed into Day-Nursery by the enactment of child welfare law in 1947. The laws and operational regulations for the Day-Nursery were set up and were put in effect by the establishment standard acts of children welfare facilities, and the Day-Nursery has been operated in various types by the increasing demand, chiefly because of the socio-economical changes of family structures in both urban and suburban areas. Nursery education for physically and mentally disadvantaged children is for those who are blind, deaf and dumb, mentally retarded; physically disadvantaged by accidents or diseases. Montessori education in Japan was started in 1968 and many research groups for studying Montessori were organized. In 1977, Montessori remedial education society was also organized in which they started a number of studies; a study for developing materials; in-service training for the remedial education; and seminars and lectures, etc It is strongly suggested that we study the early educations that are being implemented in Japan and a variety of compensatory educations that were already implemented in the U.S.A. and modify them for the organization of our own model and properly accommodate them to our social needs.
This study examined short-term longitudinal reciprocal relationships between maternal parenting behavior and preschoolers' compliance/noncompliance, as well as stability in both maternal parenting behavior and preschoolers' compliance/noncompliance over time. The sample which was used for this study was taken from a two-wave (one year apart) longitudinal study of preschool-aged children and their mothers (N = 53 dyads). At both times, mothers and their children were invited to a laboratory and engaged in 25 minutes of play involving three episodes of mother-child interaction. Maternal parenting behavior and preschoolers' compliance/noncompliance during play were coded using the Dyadic Parent-Child Interaction Coding System-III (DPICS-III). Maternal codes included positive, neutral, and negative parenting behaviors and child codes were comprised of compliance and noncompliance. The results revealed that during the play session, maternal neutral and negative parenting behavior and preschoolers' compliance were stable over time. In addition, T1 maternal negative parenting behavior was significantly related to T2 child compliance/noncompliance. However, T1 child compliance/noncompliance were not significantly associated with T2 maternal parenting behavior. These findings suggest that during the preschool period, there are unidirectional effects from mothers to children.
Purpose: It is thought that Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection is more prevalent and causes more severe pneumonia in school-age children and young adults than in preschool children; however, recent studies suggest that the infection may be underdiagnosed and more severe in preschool children. This study investigated the clinical characteristics of Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia (MPP) and the risk factors of refractory MPP (RMPP) by age. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 353 children admitted due to MPP from January 2015 to December 2016. Demographics, clinical information, laboratory data and radiological findings were collected from all patients in this study. The patients were divided into 2 groups by the age of 6 years. Also, both preschool (< 6 years old) and school-age (${\geq}6$ years old) children were divided into RMPP and non-RMPP patients. Results: Total febrile days, febrile days before admission and the duration of macrolide antibiotic therapy were significantly longer in school-age children than in preschool children. School-age children had significantly greater risk of lobar consolidation (P=0.036), pleural effusion (P=0.001) and extrapulmonary complications (P=0.019). Necrotizing pneumonia and bronchiolitis obliterans tended to occur more frequently in preschool children than in school-age children. In both preschool and school-age children, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) levels were significantly higher in RMPP patients than in non-RMPP patients. In preschool children, LDH > 722 IU/L (odds ratio [OR], 3.02; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.44-6.50) and ferritin > 177 ng/mL (OR, 5.38; 95% CI, 1.61-19.49) were significant risk factors for RMPP, while LDH > 645 IU/L (OR, 4.12; 95% CI, 1.64-10.97) and ferritin > 166 ng/mL (OR, 5.51; 95% CI, 1.59-22.32) were so in school-age children. Conclusion: Clinical features of MPP were significantly different between preschool and school-age children. LDH and ferritin may be significant factors of RMPP in preschool and school-age children.
