  • Flame structure, which contains a useful information for studying combustion instability of the flame, is often quantitatively visualized with PLIF (planar laser-induced fluorescence) and/or chemiluminescence images. The latter, a line-integral of a flame property, needs to be preprocessed before being inverted, mainly due to its inherent noise and the axisymmetry assumption of the inversion. A preprocessing scheme utilizing multi-division of ROI (region of interest) of the chemiluminescence image is proposed. Its feasibility has been tested with OH PLIF and $OH^*$ chemiluminescence images of SNG (synthetic natural gas) swirl-stabilized flames taken from a model gas turbine combustor. It turns out that the multi-division technique outperforms two conventional ones: those are, one without preprocessing and the other with uni-division preprocessing, reconstructing the SNG flame structure much better than its two counterparts, when compared with the corresponding OH PLIF images. It is also found that the Canny edge detection algorithm used for detecting edges in the multi-division method works better than the Sobel algorithm does.

  • This paper is to construction of the data mining preprocessing tool for efficient database marketing. We compare and evaluate the often used data mining tools based on the access method to local and remote databases, and on the exchange of information resources between different computers. The evaluated preprocessing of data mining tools are Answer Tree, Climentine, Enterprise Miner, Kensington, and Weka. We propose a design principle for an efficient system for data preprocessing for data mining on the distributed networks. This system is based on Java technology including EJB(Enterprise Java Beans) and XML(eXtensible Markup Language).

  • We present a preprocessing method for an underwater target detection model based on a convolutional neural network. The acoustic characteristics of the ship show ambiguous expression due to the strong signal power of the low frequency. To solve this problem, we combine feature preprocessing methods with various feature scaling methods and spectrogram methods. Define a simple convolutional neural network model and train it to measure preprocessing performance. Through experiment, we found that the combination of log Mel-spectrogram and standardization and robust scaling methods gave the best classification performance.

  • Preprocessing is indispensable to eliminate local granularities prior to region growing. In this paper, we examined the effects of preprocessing in S&M region growing technique. Experimental results show that a modified Nagao filter removes the local granularities well and compensates for the defects of Nagao filter.

  • In this paper we derive a new VAD algorithm, which combines the preprocessing algorithm and the optimum decision rule. To improve the performance of the VAD algorithm we employ the speech enhancement algorithm and then apply the maximal ratio combining technique in the preprocessing procedure, which leads to maximized output SNR. Moreover, we also perform extensive computer simulations to demonstrate the performance improvement of the proposed algorithm under various background noise environments.

  • Preprocessing for the -01 integer programming can reduce the size of problem instance as well as tighten its linear programming relaxations. In this research, the preprocessing techniques are classified into two categories. First, for the reduction of problem size, there are variable fixing and constraint elimination techniques. Second, for the reduction of feasible region, there are coefficient reduction and Euchidean reduction techniques. These methods are implemented and the effects are shown by experimental results.

  • We propose a preprocessing method for removing floating particles from underwater images based on an analysis of the image features. We compared baseline JPEG and wavelet codec methods to determine the method best suited for underwater images. The proposed preprocessing method enhanced the compression ratio and resolution, and provided an efficient means of compressing the images. The wavelet codec method yielded better compression ratios and image resolutions. The results suggest that the wavelet codec method linked with the proposed preprocess method provides an efficient codec processor and transmission system for underwater images that are used for searches and transmitted via ultrasonic communications.

  • Given a directed network, a designated arc, and lowers and upper bounds for the distance of each arc, the preprocessing shortest path problem Is a decision problem that decides whether there is some choice of distance vector such that the distance of each arc honors the given lower and upper bound restriction, and such that the designated arc is on some shortest path from a source node to a destination notre with respect to the chosen distance vector. The preprocessing shortest path problem has many real world applications such as communication and transportation network management and the problem is known to be NP-complete. In this paper, we develop an algorithm that solves the problem using the structural properties of shortest paths.

  • In this paper, we propose a new scheme to suppress the narrowband interference (NBI) in OFDM-based systems. The scheme utilizes code division multiple access (CDMA) and weighted-type fractional Fourier transform (WFRFT) domain preprocessing technologies. Through setting the WFRFT order, the scheme can switch into a single carrier (SC) or a multi-carrier (MC) frequency division multiple access block transmission system. The residual NBI can be eliminated to the maximum extent when the WFRFT order is selected properly. Final simulation results show that the proposed system can outperform MC and SC with CDMA and frequency domain preprocessing in terms of the narrowband interference suppression.

  • 3D point data acquired from laser scan or stereo vision can be quite noisy. A preprocessing step is often needed before a surface reconstruction algorithm can be applied. In this paper, we propose a nonparametric approach for noisy point data preprocessing. In particular, we proposed an anisotropic kernel based nonparametric density estimation method for outlier removal, and a hill-climbing line search approach for projecting data points onto the real surface boundary. Our approach is simple, robust and efficient. We demonstrate our method on both real and synthetic point datasets.
