The Indian summer monsoon behaved an abnormal way in 2002 and as a result there was a large deficiency in precipitation (especially in July) over a large part of the Indian subcontinent. For the study of deficient monsoon of 2002, a recent version of the NCAR regional climate model (RegCM3) has been used to examine the important features of summer monsoon circulations and precipitation during 2002. The main characteristics of wind fields at lower level (850 hPa) and upper level (200 hPa) and precipitation simulated with the RegCM3 over the Indian subcontinent are studied using different cumulus parameterization schemes namely, mass flux schemes, a simplified Kuo-type scheme and Emanuel (EMU) scheme. The monsoon circulation features simulated by RegCM3 are compared with the NCEP/NCAR reanalysis and simulated precipitation is validated against observation from the Global Precipitation Climatology Centre (GPCC). Validation of the wind fields at lower and upper levels show that the use of Arakawa and Schubert (AS) closure in Grell convection scheme, a Kuo type and Emanuel schemes produces results close to the NCEP/NCAR reanalysis. Similarly, precipitation simulated with RegCM3 over different homogeneous zones of India with the AS closure in Grell is more close to the corresponding observed monthly and seasonal values. RegcM3 simulation also captured the spatial distribution of deficient rainfall in 2002.
We investigated the sensitivity of Korean streamflows to climate variation. Historical dam inflows and climate data for eight multi-purpose dam sites were collected and examined to determine key factors affecting streamflow change. The results show that annual streamflow primarily responds to change in precipitation rather than temperature. However, the combination of less precipitation and high temperature induces a more serious decrease in streamflow than does similar precipitation and with low temperature. This result indicates that Korean water resources could be more vulnerable to drought due to increasing temperature caused by global warming. To estimate spatial differences in climate sensitivity, we also calculated climate elasticity for 109 mid-size watersheds using streamflow simulated by the Precipitation Runoff Modeling System (PRMS). Climate elasticity ranges over 1.5~1.9, indicating that a +20% increase in annual precipitation leads to a +30~+38% increase in annual streamflow.
The Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model was designed to identify the role of the Taebaek Mountains in the occurrence of heavy snowfall in Yeongdong area with a strong northeast wind on January 20-21, 2008. To this end, in addition to the control simulation with the realistic distribution of the Taebaek Mountains, a sensitivity experiment that removed the orography over the Taebaek Mountains was performed. The control simulation results showed that the resulting wind field and precipitation distribution were similar to what were observed. Results from the sensitivity experiment clearly demonstrates the presence of orographic lifting on the windward slope of the mountains. It is concluded that the altitude of the Taebaek Mountains is the main controlling factor in determining the distribution and amount of precipitation in the Yeongdong area for the case of heavy snowfall in January 2008.

Based on the transient finite difference solution of Richards' equation, an infiltration model is developed to analyze temporal variation of precipitation recharge in the region of monsoon climates. Simulation results obtained by using time series data of 20-year daily precipitation and pan evaporation indicate that a linear relationship between the annual precipitation and the annual recharge holds for the soils under the monsoon climates with varying degrees of the correlation coefficient depending on the soil types. A sensitivity analysis reveals that the water table depth has little effects on the recharge for the sandy soil, whereas, for the loamy and silty soils, rise of the water table at shallow depths causes increase of evaporation by approximately 100㎜/yr and a corresponding decrease in recharge. A series of simulations for two-layered soils illustrate that the amount of recharge is dominantly determined by the soil properties of the upper layer, although the temporal variation of recharge is affected by both layers.
This paper evaluates precipitation forecast skill of Global/Regional Integrated Model system (GRIMs) over South Korea in a boreal winter from December 2013 to February 2014. Three types of precipitation are classified based on development mechanism: 1) convection type (C type), 2) low pressure type (L type), and 3) orographic type (O type), in which their frequencies are 44.4%, 25.0%, and 30.6%, respectively. It appears that the model significantly overestimates precipitation occurrence (0.1 mm d-1) for all types of winter precipitation. Objective measured skill scores of GRIMs are comparably high for L type and O type. Except for precipitation occurrence, the model shows high predictability for L type precipitation with the most unbiased prediction. It is noted that Equitable Threat Score (ETS) is inappropriate for measuring rare events due to its high dependency on the sample size, as in the case of Critical Success Index as well. The Symmetric Extreme Dependency Score (SEDS) demonstrates less sensitivity on the number of samples. Thus, SEDS is used for the evaluation of prediction skill to supplement the limit of ETS. The evaluation via SEDS shows that the prediction skill score for L type is the highest in the range of 5.0, 10.0 mm d-1 and the score for O type is the highest in the range of 1.0, 20.0 mm d-1. C type has the lowest scores in overall range. The difference in precipitation forecast skill by precipitation type can be explained by the spatial distribution and intensity of precipitation in each representative case.

The effects of the terminal fall velocity-diameter relationship for raindrops, which is prescribed based on the measurement, on the simulated surface precipitation over Korea during summer season were investigated in our study. Two rainfall cases, 1-month summer precipitation and mesoscale rainfall, have been simulated using the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model. The selected cloud microphysics parameterizations are WRF Single-Moment 5-class (WSM5) and WRF Single-Moment 6-class (WSM6) in the WRF model. The measured terminal fall-diameter relationship for raindrops by Gunn and Kinzer (1949) was applied in both WSM5 and WSM6. The sensitivity experiments with WSM5 and WSM6, applying the measured fall-diameter relationship, presents the different responses in simulated precipitation amount for the 1-month summer precipitation case. Precipitation increases with WSM5, thus enhancing the precipitation statistical skills. However, precipitation decreases with WSM6 leading to the deterioration of precipitation statistical skills. For the mesoscale rainfall case, precipitation increases with both WSM5 and WSM6, which further enhances the positive bias in precipitation amount.
This study was carried out to investigate the effect of precipitate on the high temperature deformation stability of incoloy 825 alloy. $Cr_{23}C_6$ carbide was precipitated under $950^{\circ}C$, but was not detected over $1,000^{\circ}C$. Most of the precipitation consist of $Cr_{23}C_6$ carbide. Strain-rate sensitivity was the highest in 0.01/s and the lowest in 10/s. Strain-rate sensitivity was decreased sharply below $950^{\circ}C$. In the temperature between $850^{\circ}C{\sim}1,150^{\circ}C$, plastic instable area did not exist. It showed the lowest Ziegler Parameter value of 0.06 Ziegler Parameter was the lowest as 0.06 at $850^{\circ}C$ with 10s-1 of strain. The highest Ziegler Parameter value(0.43) was found in plastic deformation at $1,050^{\circ}C$ with 0.01s-1 of strain. It tends to have an higher resistance to the high temperature deformation under $950^{\circ}C$, due to the precipitation.

This study reports an examination of the sensitivity of water resources in the Keum River basin to climate change. Assuming a doubling in $CO_2$ concentrations, a cooperative study provided four climate change scenarios for this study, which have been translated into temperature and precipitation scenarios on a basin scale. The study utilized these temperature and precipitation data for each climate change scenario as inputs to the NWS-PC model to generate the corresponding streamflow scenario over the Keum River basin. A reservoir simulation model for the Dae-Chung Dam in the Keum River basin has been developed with an object-oriented simulation environment, STELLA. For each streamflow scenario, the performance of the reservoir was assessed in terms of reliability, resiliency, and vulnerability. Although the simulation results are heavily dependent on the choice of the climate change scenarios, the following conclusions can be clearly concluded: (1) the future streamflow over the Dae-Chung Dam tends to decease during the dry period, which seriously increases competitive water use issues and (2) flood control issues predominate under the $2CO_2$-High case.

The main purpose of this study is to assess the sensitivity of meteorological drought indices in probabilistic perspective using Bayesian Network model. In other words, this study analyzed interrelationships between various drought indices and investigated the order of the incident. In this study, a Bayesian Network model was developed to evaluate meteorological drought characteristics by employing the percent of normal precipitation (PN) and Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) with various time scales such as 30, 60, and 90 days. The sensitivity analysis was also performed for posterior probability of drought indices with various time scales. As a result, this study found out interdependent relationships among various drought indices and proposed the effective application method of SPI to drought monitoring.

In this study, the variability of the Horton index which is ratio of vaporization and wetting water is investigated using a conceptual soil water balance model. From the proposed model, the steady-state soil water probabilistic density function is derived through meteorological and watershed characteristics and then the sensitivity of Horton index to the precipitation occurrence rate and the mean of wet day precipitation is examined. As a result, the inter-annual variability of the Horton index is lower than that of precipitation and they showed the strong negative correlation. It is also shown that although precipitation is not varied, the Horton index can be varied due to the fluctuation of the precipitation occurrence rate and the mean of wet day precipitation. In addition, it is presented that there is a non-linear relationship which has a critical point switching proportional or inverse relationship between the Horton index and two main characteristics of precipitation process.
