  • There are very few numbers of 115K FPP (Fixed Pitch Propulsion) Tankers for the Baltic ice class IA because the minimum power requirement of FMA (Finish- Swedish Maritime Association) needs quite large engine power and the 40 m Beam is out of calculation range of FMA minimum power requirements. The shipyard has no choice except to increase the engine power to satisfy FMA minimum power requirement Rule. And the operation cost, efficiency of hullform and its building cost are not good from the ship owners' point of view To solve this problem, the experience of ice breaking tanker development and the ice tank test results were adopted. The main idea to reduce the ice resistance is by reducing waterline angle at design load waterline. The reason behind the main idea is to reduce the ice-clearing force. Two hull forms were developed to satisfy Baltic Ice class IA. Two ice tank tests and one towing tank test was performed at MARC (Kvaener-Masa Arctic Research Center) and SSMB (Samsung Ship Model Basin) facilities, respectively. The purpose of these tests was to verify the performance in ice and open water respectively The hull form 2 shows less speed loss compared to Hull form 1 in open water operation but hull form 2 shows very good ice clearing ability. finally the Hull Form 2 satisfying Baltic ice class IA. The merit of this hull form is to use the same engine capacity and no major design changes in hull form and other related designs But the hull structure has to be changed according to the ice class grade. The difference in two hull form development methods, ice model test methods and analysis methods of ice model test will be described in this paper.

  • Hull form development for an AFRAMAX tanker characterized by the form parameters of $C_B\simeq0.8$, $L/B\simeq5.5$, $B/T\simeq3.5$, han been carried out by the application of ‘Composite Stern Frameline Concept’. The viscous resistance of the new form was much smaller than that of the conventional form. Form factor of the new form was only 0.18 compared to 0.30 for the conventional hull form, Nevertheless the propulsive efficiency was slightly lower and thus the required propulsion power was smaller by 5~6% at both full load and ballast condition. In addition, it is confirmed that introduction of the form factor method such as ITTC’78 method is highly advisable because there is a great risk of the underperdicting full scale resistance of the hull form whose form the extrapolation of moel resistance to full scale is to be based on Froude method with the correlation allowances usually applied to conventional hull forms.

  • This paper is a study on an accurate and computationally efficient method for reconstructing pointwise power distributions from coarse-mesh nodal calculations. The modern nodal codes can calculate global reactor power shapes and criticality very efficiently and accurately. But inherent in the nodal procedures, there is inevitable loss of information on local heterogeneous quantities. In this study, an improved form function method which reflects the exponential transition of the thermal flux near the assembly surface is developed for the reconstruction of the heterogeneous fluxes. Use of the new form function method in several pressurized water reactor (PWR) benchmark problems reduces the maximum errors in the reconstructed thermal flux to those in the reconstructed fast flux. Even for assemblies adjacent to the steel baffle in realistic PWR cores, use of this method also results in improved pointwise power reconstruction.

  • The empirical correlations for the prediction of penetration height of liquid jet in crossflow are reviewed and classified in this study. Around thirty different correlations had been proposed by many investigators. It has generally known that the penetration height of a liquid jet in a cross-flow is a function of the liquid to air momentum flux ratio and the normalized downstream distance from the injector. However, several researchers incorporated the Weber number, liquid-to-water or air viscosity ratio, pressure ratio or Reynolds number, temperature ratio in the empirical correlations. The existing correlations can be grouped as correlations in a power-law, logarithmic, and exponential forms, respectively. Correlations in a power-law form can be further classified as three groups such as basic form, Weber number form and other parameters form. It should be pointed out that correlations in a logarithmic form in terms of Weber number or any other parameters could not be found. Universal correlation has still not been established due to the significant discrepancies between various correlations suggested to date. Several of the studies reported the significant discrepancies of predicted values by the existing correlations. The possible reasons for discrepancies will be summarized as measurement technique, assumptions made in defining terms in the liquid to air momentum flux ratio, difficulties in defining the boundaries of the liquid jets, and nozzle/injector geometry. Evaluation of validity for the correlations proposed recently by several investigators is essentially required. Those include eight power-law forms, two logarithmic forms, and one exponential form.

  • Natural forms could be ultimate visual expression power that affects on the industrial design. The rule of power in nature as nature formal characteristics have a direct influence and can be also applied to productional and artificial form. All organic forms and structures in nature have unique form and shape to be self controlled and good in order. Such an order in nature comes from regular and ratio principles which has aesthetical order by mathematics. The specialty of beauty in nature can be revealed not only visual form but also the ratio, balance and rhythm of structural principles. As we examine the aesthetic source, embodied some object can be developed into basic principles. Furthermore, through this study we can find out that the form theory in nature forms share the quality attribute with geometrical form to be shown in industrial product design. In this context, this study aims to make dear visual quality of organic form and structure that is immanent in nature about a form as formative principles of industrial product design, the significancy of this study is to prove the application into functional and structural form of product design.

  • As the introduction of wind power is steadily increasing, negative effects of wind power become more important. To operate a power system more reliable, the system operator needs to recognize the maximum required capacity of available generators for a certain period. For recognizing the maximum capacity, this paper proposes a methodology to determine an optimal reserve requirement considering wind power, for the certain period in the mid-term perspective. As wind speed is predicted earlier, the difference of the forecasted and the actual wind speed becomes greater. All possible forecast errors should be considered in determining optimal reserve, and they are represented explicitly by the proposed matrix form in this paper. In addition, impacts of the generator failure are also analyzed using the matrix form. Through three main stages which are the scheduling, contingency and evaluation stages, costs associated with power generation, reserve procurement and the usage, and the reliability cost are calculated. The optimal reserve requirement is determined so as to minimize the sum of these costs based on the cost/reliability analysis. In case study, it is performed to analyze the impact of wind power penetration on the reserve requirement, and how major factors affect it.

  • In this paper, the radiative electric field intensity due to the communication signal and conductive noise is calculated in overhead medium voltage power lines for power line communication. The input impedance is calculated by means of 2 port equivalent model of medium voltage power line network and basic transmission line theory. And then, currents is calculated by calculated input impedance and finally, the emissive electric field is calculated. The input impedance appears like a standing wave form with a fixed cycle because high reflection at the input terminal due to the characteristic impedance of medium voltage power line is very large. A calculated current and radiative electric field also appears like this form. From the measurement results, the measured results are very similar to the calculated results.
