Paclitaxel is a taxane diterpene amide, which was first extracted from the stem bark of the western yew, Taxus brevifolia. This natural product has proven to be useful in the treatment of a variety of human neoplastic disorders, including ovarian cancer, breast and lung cancer. Paclitaxel is a highly hydrophobic drug that is poorly soluble in water. It is mainly given by intravenous administration. Therefore, The pharmaceutical formulation of paclitaxel ($Taxol^{(R)}$; Bristol-Myers Squibb) contains 50% $Cremophor^{(R)}$ EL and 50% dehydrated ethanol. However the ethanol/Cremophor EL vehicle required to solubilize paclitaxel in $Taxol^{(R)}$ has a pharmacological and pharmaceutical problems. To overcome these problems, new formulations for paclitaxel that do not require solubilization by $Cremophor^{(R)}$ EL are currently being developed. Therefore this study utilized a supercritical fluid antisolvent (SAS) process for cremophor-free formulation. To select hydrophilic polymers that require solubilization for paclitaxel, we evaluated polymers and the ratio of paclitaxel/polymers. HP-${\beta}$-CD was used as a hydrophilic polymer in the preparation of the paclitaxel solid dispersion. Although solubility of paclitaxel by polymers was increased, physical stability of solution after paclitaxel/polymer powder soluble in saline was unstable. To overcome this problem, we investigated the use of surfactants. At 1/20/40 of paclitaxel/hydrophilic polymer/ surfactant weight ratio, about 10 mg/mL of paclitaxel can be solubilized in this system. Compared with the solubility of paclitaxel in water ($1\;{\mu}g/mL$), the paclitaxel solid dispersion prepared by SAS process increased the solubility of paclitaxel by near 10,000 folds. The physicochemical properties was also evaluated. The particle size distribution, melting point and amophorization and shape of the powder particles were fully characterized by particle size distribution analyzer, DSC, SEM and XRD. In summary, through the SAS process, uniform nano-scale paclitaxel solid dispersion powders were obtained with excellent results compared with $Taxol^{(R)}$ for the physicochemical properties, solubility and pharmacokinetic behavior.
$ZrB_2$-based composites are candidate materials for ultra-high temperature materials (UHTMs). $ZrB_2$ has become an indispensable ingredient in UHTMs, due to its high melting temperature, relatively low density, and excellent resistance to thermal shock or oxidation. $ZrB_2$ powders are usually synthesized by solid state reactions such as carbothermal, borothermal, or combined carbothermal reaction. SiC is added to this system in order to enhance the oxidation resistance of $ZrB_2$. In this study, $ZrB_2$?based composites were successfully synthesized and densified through two different processing paths. $ZrB_2$ or $ZrB_2$ 25 vol.%SiC was fully synthesized from oxide starting materials with reducing agents after heat treatment at 1400$^{\circ}C$. Besides, $ZrB_2$?20 vol.%SiC was fully densified with $B_4C$ as a sintering additive after hot pressing at 1900$^{\circ}C$. The synthesis mechanism and the effect of sintering additives on densification of $ZrB_2$ ?SiC composites were also discussed.
Additive manufacturing (AM) technologies have attracted wide attention as key technologies for the next industrial revolution. Among AM technologies using various materials, powder bed fusion (PBF) processes and direct energy deposition (DED) are representative of the metal 3-D printing process. Both of these processes have a common feature that the laser is used as a heat source to fabricate the 3-D shape through melting of the metal powder and solidification. However, the material properties of the deposited metals differ when produced by different process conditions and methods. 17-4 precipitation-hardening stainless steel (17-4PH SS) is widely used in the field of aircraft, chemical, and nuclear industries because of its good mechanical properties and excellent corrosion resistance. In this study, we investigated the differences in microstructure and mechanical properties of deposited 17-4PH SS by PBF and DED processes, including the heat treatment effect.
In this study, we investigate the effect of additive size on the densification and thermal conductivity of AlN ceramics with $MgO-CaO-Al_2O_3-SiO_2$ (MCAS) additives. Micro-sized MCAS powder prepared via melting and nano-sized MCAS powder synthesized via the polymeric complex method are used as sintering additives. We analyze the densification behavior of AlN added with 5 wt.% of MCAS by dilatometry as well as by isothermal sintering in the temperature range of $1300{\sim}1700^{\circ}C$. AlN exhibits higher sinterability with nano-MCAS than with micro-MCAS, and both specimens approach their maximum densities when sintered at $1600^{\circ}C$ for 4 h. The thermal conductivities of AlN with 5 wt% of nano- and micro-MCAS additives sintered at $1600^{\circ}C$ are 82.6 and 32.0 W/mK, respectively. We find that nano-MCAS is more effective in sintering of AlN ceramics at lower temperatures, and thus for enhancing their thermal conductivities.
Tungsten carbide (WC) hard materials are used in various industries and possess a superior hardness compared to other hard materials. They have particularly high melting points, high strength, and abrasion resistance. Accordingly, tungsten carbide hard materials are used for wear-resistant tools, cutting tools, machining tools, and other tooling materials. In this study, the WC-5wt.%Co, Fe, Ni hard materials are densified using the horizontal ball milled WC-Co, WC-Fe, and WC-Ni powders by a spark plasma sintering process. The WC-5Co, WC-5Fe, and WC-5Ni hard materials are almost completely densified with a relative density of up to 99.6% after simultaneous application of a pressure of 60 MPa and an electric current for about 15 min without any significant change in the grain size. The average grain size of WC-5Co, WC-5Fe, and WC-5Ni that was produced through SPS was about 0.421, 0.779, and $0.429{\mu}m$, respectively. The hardness and fracture toughness of the dense WC-5Co, WC-5Fe, WC-5Ni hard materials were also investigated.
Tungsten heavy alloys (W-Ni-Fe) play an important role in various industries because of their excellent mechanical properties, such as the excellent hardness of tungsten, low thermal expansion, corrosion resistance of nickel, and ductility of iron. In tungsten heavy alloys, tungsten nanoparticles allow the relatively low-temperature molding of high-melting-point tungsten and can improve densification. In this study, to improve the densification of tungsten heavy alloy, nanoparticles are manufactured by ultrasonic milling of metal oxide. The physical properties of the metal oxide and the solvent viscosity are selected as the main parameters. When the density is low and the Mohs hardness is high, the particle size distribution is relatively high. When the density is high and the Mohs hardness is low, the particle size distribution is relatively low. Additionally, the average particle size tends to decrease with increasing viscosity. Metal oxides prepared by ultrasonic milling in high-viscosity solvent show an average particle size of less than 300 nm based on the dynamic light scattering and scanning electron microscopy analysis. The effects of the physical properties of the metal oxide and the solvent viscosity on the pulverization are analyzed experimentally.

This study was carried out to investigate the effect of hydrocolloids on the changes in physical properties of a model ice cream. The model ice cream contained water, sugar, skin milk powder, com oil, and 4 different hydrocolloid stabilizers (gelatin, pectin, hydroxyethylstarch, locust bean gum), was manufactured in a batch type freezer. The following physical characteristics of ice cream were examined: flow behavior, overrun, air cell size, ice crystal size, and melt resistance. With regard to flow behavior, all of aged mixes had a lower apparent viscosity relative to the mix before aging, and ice cream mix containing locust bean gum had the highest viscosity. Air cell size was observed to range from 20 to $38\;{\mu}m$, and ice cream with locust bean gum showed the largest size. There was an inverse correlation between overrun and air cell size. The ice crystal sizes of all samples ranged from 25 to $35\;{\mu}m$. Ice cream with added pectin contained the smallest ice crystal size, which was significantly difference from other stabilizers (p<0.05), and resulted in superior melt resistance with increased melting time compared to other samples.
