  • Fe-Mn-Si-Ni-Cr-TiC alloys have a shape memory property, recovering initial shape by heating. With an aim to improve a durability and stability of building and infrastructure, this Fe-based shape memory alloy (FSMA) can be employed to reinforce concrete structure with creation of compressive residual stress. In this work, corrosion resistance of FSMA was compared with general rebar and S400 carbon steel to evaluate the stability in concrete environment. Potentiodynamic polarization test in de-ionized water, tap-water and 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution with variations of pH was used to compare the corrosion resistance. FSMA shows better corrosion resistance than rebar and S400 in tested solutions. However, Cl-containing solution is critical to significantly reduce the corrosion resistance of FSMA. Therefore, though FSMA can be a promising candidate to replace the rebar and S400 for the reinforcement of concrete structure, serious cautions are required in marine environments.

  • This paper investigated the characteristics of anodized aluminum 6061-T6 alloy for corrosion and stress corrosion cracking(SCC) under natural seawater. The hard anodizing oxide film formed on the 6061-T6 was a uniform thickness of about 25 ㎛. The corrosion characteristics were performed with a potentiodynamic polarization test. SCC was characterized by a slow strain rate tensile test under 0.005mm/min rate. As a result, the anodizing film showed no significant effect on SCC in the slow strain rate test. However, the corrosion current density of base metal was measured to be approximately 13 times higher than that of the anodized specimen. Therefore, the anodizing film significantly improved the corrosion resistance of 6061-T6 alloy in natural seawater.

  • In this study, calcium titanate $(CaTiO_3)$ gel was prepared by mixing calcium nitrate and titanium isopropoxide in 2-methoxy-ethanol. $CaTiO_3$ gel was single-layer coated on Ti-6Al-4V using a sol-gel dip-coating technique. The coating was calcined at $750^{\circ}C$ in air by utilizing a very slow heating rate of $2^{\circ}C/min$. The crystalline phases of the coating were characterized by x-ray diffraction using a slow scan rate of $1^{\circ}/min$. The morphology of the coating was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy. The corrosion behavior of Ti-6Al-4V samples coated with $CaTiO_3$ films were tested in an artificial saliva solution by potentiodynamic polarization and were quantified by the Tafel extrapolation method. The electrochemical parameters showed a considerable increase in the corrosion resistance for the $CaTiO_3$-coated Ti-6Al-4V samples compared to bare substrates.

  • In this experiment, post-nitriding treatment has been performed at $400^{\circ}C$ on AISI 316 stainless steel which is plasma carburized previously at $430^{\circ}C$ for 15 hours. Plasma nitriding was implemented on AISI 316 stainless steel at various gas compositions (25% N2, 50% N2 and 75% N2) for 4 hours. Additionally, during post nitriding Ar gas was used with H2 and N2 to observe the improvement of treatment. After treatment, the behavior of the hybrid layer was investigated by optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and micro-hardness testing. Potentiodynamic polarization test was also used to evaluate the corrosion resistance of the samples. Meanwhile, it was found that the surface hardness increased with increasing the nitrogen gas content. Also small percentage of Ar gas was introduced in the post nitriding process which improved the hardness of the hardened layer but reduces the corrosion resistance compared with the carburized sample. The experiment revealed that AISI 316L stainless steel showed better hardness and excellent corrosion resistance compared with the carburized sample, when 75% N2 gas was used during the post nitriding treatment. Also addition of Ar gas during post nitriding treatment were degraded the corrosion resistance of the sample compared with the carburized sample.

  • The effect of potassium permanganate ($KMnO_4$) in an electrolyte on the corrosion performance of magnesium alloy coated by micro-arc oxidation (MAO) has been investigated in this study. For this purpose, MAO coating was carried out on the present sample under AC condition in an alkaline silicate electrolyte with and without $KMnO_4$. Irrespective of the addition of $KMnO_4$, it was found from structural observation that the ceramic coating layers consisted of inner and outer layers. In the sample processed in the electrolyte with $KMnO_4$, the outer layer became dense and even contained a number of $Mn_2O_3$ atoms, resulting in high corrosion resistance. Based on the results of a potentiodynamic polarization test, it was confirmed that the coating layer formed in the electrolyte with $KMnO_4$exhibited better corrosion resistance than that without $KMnO_4$. The high corrosion resistance of the MAO-treated magnesium alloy was explained in relation to the equivalent circuit model.

  • A thin spray coating of inorganic black lithium polysilicate (IBLP) on black anodized AZ31B magnesium alloy was fabricated for better corrosion resistance and thermo-optical properties for thermal control of spacecraft components. The morphology of the specimens with and without IBLP-based spray coating was characterized by SEM-EDS techniques. Impedance and potentiodynamic measurements on the specimens revealed better corrosion resistance for the specimen with a thin coating of lithium polysilicate. This was primarily due to the presence of lithium polysilicate inside the micro-cracks of the black anodized specimen, restricting the diffusion paths for corrosive media. Environmental tests, namely, humidity, thermal cycling, thermo vacuum performance, were used to evaluate the space-worthiness of the coating. The thermo-optical properties of the coating were measured before and after each environmental test to ascertain its stability. The specimen with an IBLP-based spray coating showed enhanced thermo-optical properties, greater than ~0.90. Hence, the proposed coating demonstrated better handling, better corrosion resistance, and space-worthiness during the pre-launch phase owing to its improved thermo-optical properties.

  • In this study, we examined corrosion behaviors of two types of Pb alloys for a lead acid battery comparatively. One containing 6.6 wt% Sn, 36 mg/kg Bi, and 612.4 mg/kg Ca was prepared by twin-roll continuous casting. The other containing 5.2 wt% Sn, 30.5 mg/kg Ag, and 557 mg/kg Ca was made by twin-belt continuous casting. Potentiodynamic polarization tests were performed to evaluate corrosion resistance. Cyclic voltammetry was done to examine oxidation and reduction reactions occurring on the surface of each alloy in 4.8 M H2SO4 solution. Electrochemical test results implied that the Pb alloy prepared with the twin-belt casting method was less stable than that cast with the twin-roll method. Such results might be due to precipitations formed during the casting process. Rolling did not appear to affect the corrosion behavior of the twin-roll samples with Ag < 10 mg/kg, while it reduced the anodic reaction of Ag on the surface of the twin-belt sample with 30.5 mg/kg Ag.

  • In this work, we describe the effect of pulse anodizing duty ratio on the corrosion resistance of anodic films in magnesium AZ31B. The process involves the application of square pulse potential for a constant period with a duty ratio varying from 40, 60 and 80%. In several samples, a sealing treatment for 30 minutes was conducted after anodization in order to seal the pores available in the anodic layer. After anodizing, the surface morphology of the anodic layer was examined using a scanning electron microscope (SEM Hitachi SU3500). The corrosion characteristics of the sample were evaluated through an open circuit potential (OCP) and potentiodynamic polarization test using potentiogalvanostat. SEM observation shows that the increase of anodization duty ratio (α) results in a more uniform anodic layer, with fewer pores and cracks. The increase of duty ratio (α) decreases the OCP value from approximately -1.475 to about -1.6 Volt, and significantly improves the corrosion resistance of the anodic coating by 68%. The combination of anodization and sealing treatment produces an anodic coating with a very low corrosion rate of 4.4 mpy.

  • The corrosion inhibition of cast iron in 1 M HCl by Phenanthroline (Phen) was investigated using potentiodynamic polarization (PDP) curves, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), surface analysis and theoretical calculations. It is found that Phen exhibits high inhibition activity towards the corrosive action of HCl and its adsorption obeys the Langmuir adsorption isotherm model. The results showed that inhibition efficiency increases with Phen concentration up to a maximum value of 96% at 1.4 mM, and decreases slightly with the increase in temperature. The free adsorption energy value indicates that Phen adsorbs on cast iron surface in 1 M HCl via a simultaneous physisorption and chemisorption mechanism. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) micrographs, atomic force microscopy (AFM) and FTIR analysis confirmed the formation of a protective film on cast iron surface, resulting in the improvement of its corrosion resistance in the studied aggressive solution. Quantum chemical calculations at the DFT level were achieved to correlate electronic structure parameters of Phen molecules with their adsorption mode.
