  • Objectives : This study was designed to evaluate the influence of postauricular pain on Bell's palsy patients. Methods : We investigated 71 cases of patients with Bell's palsy and classified them as existence of Postauricural pain, 71 patients were sequentially interviewed and examined. We evaluated the treatment effect of each group by using Gross Grading System of House-Brackmann(H-B grade) before treatment and after final treatment and we researched differences of sequelae of Bell's palsy, period of treatment, changing point -period from onset of Bell's palsy to the day which the change begins to be seen at the face- and improvement -period which Bell's palsy is improved from onset to H-B gradeII. Results : 1. In age, sex, lesion, duration of disease, we found that two groups have no significant differences. 2. In improvement and period of treatment, we found that two groups have significant differences. In changing-point, we found that two groups had the difference of the average, but they were not statistically significant. 3. As a result of evaluation by using H-B grade, treatment score after final treatment was marked higher than that before treatment within each group. 4. After final treatment, Non-postauricular pain group had significant difference(result) on H-B grade compared with Postauricular pain group. 5. In frequency of sequelae symptoms of Bell's palsy, Postauricular pain group had more higher compared with Non-postauricular pain group. Conclusion : These results suggested that Non postauricular pain group should be get better than Postauricular pain group.

  • Objectives : This study was to investigate the efficacy of Scolopendrid pharmacopuncture on relieving postauricular pain which was an early symptom of Bell's palsy. Methods : Clinical observation was done on 32 patients diagnosed with Bell's palsy in Cheon-ahn Oriental Medical Hospital of Daejeon University from November 11, 2011 to August 31, 2012. The patients were divided into 2 groups; group A received conventional treatment alone and group B received conventional treatment as well as Scolopendrid pharmacopuncture treatment. Results : 1. Scolopendrid pharmacopuncture group(group B) exhibited significantly reduced postauricular pain compared to conventional treatment group(group A). 2. Group B had significantly shorter duration of postauricular pain than group A. 3. Group B group showed better outcome than the group A but the difference was not significant. Conclusions : Scolopendrid pharmacopuncture shows a significant beneficial effect on postauricular pain as an early symptom of Bell's palsy.

These patients were diveided into two groups; One was control group that was treated general oriental medical treatment(Group I) and The other was treated Bee Venom Pharmacopuncture in the posterior ear with general oriental medical treatment. (Group II) Results : 1. Group II was more effective than Group I in the VAS score after 1st, 2nd, 3rd Bee Venom Pharmacopuncture treatmenton posterior ear about postauricular pain. 2. In Group II compared with Group I, postauricular pain duration was reduced. 3. As a result of evaluation by using Yanagihara score, they were not significant score within two groups after final treament. Conclusions : Bee Venom Phannacopuncture on peripheral facial paralysis patient with postauricular pain in the posterior ear was more effective in reducing the pain.

  • Objectives : The aim of this study was to report Bell's palsy patients with postauricular pain treated by Calculus Bovis Fel Ursi Moschus(BUM) Pharmacopuncture. Methods : The 6 patients were treated by the Korean medica treatment including herbal medication, dry needle acupuncture and physical therapy. We performed BUM Pharmacopuncture in Yepung for the treatment of postauricular pain once or twice. We have evaluated the effect of BUM Pharmacopuncture by Visual Analog Scale(VAS). Results : After BUM Pharmacopuncture for the treatment of postauricular pain, VAS were decreased in all cases. Conclusions : It was suggested that BUM Pharmacopuncture might have effect on control of auricular pain in Bell's palsy. Further, systemic studies will be needed to evaluate obvious effect of BUM pharmacopuncture on postauricular pain of Bell's palsy.

  • Ramsay-Hunt syndrome is a related but more serious disorder caused by herpes zoster viral infection of the geniculate ganglion. It is characterized by unilateral painful vesicular rash of the uvula, palate, auricle, ear canal, and postauricular area, but it can extend into the facial tissues as well. Paralysis of the facial nerve is often seen, and there can be disequilibrium and hearing problems also. We experienced continuous cervical epidural block (CCEB) with intermittent stellate ganglion block is effective in Ramsay-Hunt syndrome. CCEB should be considered to the treatment of choice in Ramsay-Hunt syndrome.
