  • The current study examined the differential effects of giving and receiving social support in the elderly when relationships(family, friend/neighbor) are important. For this purpose, the mediation effects of meaning in life on the relationship between giving and receiving social support and self-esteem were analyzed. Self-reporting data of 310 adults aged over 60 living in Busan and Gyeongnam in South Korea were collected regarding giving and receiving social support, meaning of life and self-esteem. The mediation analysis showed that giving social support had a positive effect on self-esteem with the partial mediation effect of meaning in life. Receiving social support, however, showed no significant mediation effect of meaning in life. This pattern was similar regardless of both family and non-family relations. The result that giving social support enhances self-worth in the elderly through meaning in life suggests the importance of social interaction with intimate others as a source of happiness in the elderly.

  • This study examined how empowerment of restaurant cooks influences job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and customer orientation, targeting 260 restaurant cooks in the Busan area. SPSS 18.0 was employed to perform frequency, factor, reliability, and multiple (simple) regression analyses. Empowerment was analyzed using 3 factors (self-authority, meaning and competence) while job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and customer orientation were analyzed using 1 factor each. Results of a correlation analysis of the hypothesized model revealed positive correlations among the variables. Multiple (simple) regression analyses of the hypothesized model found that the sub empowerment factors will have a positive influence on job satisfaction with self-authority (${\beta}$=.372, p<.001), meaning (${\beta}$=.451, p<.001), competence (${\beta}$=.240, p<.001). It was also found that the sub empowerment factors will have a positive influence on organizational commitment with self-authority (${\beta}$=.433, p<.001), meaning (${\beta}$=.473, p<.001), competence (${\beta}$=.302, p<.001). Lastly, the hypotheses that job satisfaction will have a positive influence on organizational commitment (${\beta}$=.775, p<.001), that job satisfaction will have a positive influence on customer orientation (${\beta}$=.467, p<.001), and that organizational commitment will have a positive influence on customer orientation (${\beta}$=.567, p<.001) were adopted.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop a MOL instrument for school-age children in grades 4 through 6. Method: The research design was a methodological study. A four-phase design involved. 1) Interview data generated from professors, nurses, and elementary school students (n=8). 2) Content validation by expert panel (n=14) 3) Initial items corrected by elementary school students (n=20) 4) Instrument validation by survey (n=574). Finally, 24 items were chosen as a meaning of life scale for late school-age children. Results: The Cronbach's alpha coefficient of 24 items was .893 indicated a high internal consistency of the instrument, 2) Through factor analysis, 5 factors were extracted. These factors were labeled as 'relational experience', 'positive attitude', 'satisfaction/ hope', 'pursuit of goal', and experience of family love. These factors explained 52.311% of the total variance. Conclusion: The MOL scale for late school-age children can be used in nursing programs to improve the meaning of life.
