Sand piling method is one of the most widely used methods to improve soft soils. There are several methods to install sand piles, but driven pile method is considered as one of the easiest method. This method simply pushes down the sand piles into soft soils, so that the excess pore pressure would be generated if the soil is saturated. This pore pressure acts as consolidation load. If the amount of sand pile induced pore pressure can be predicted in reasonable ways, the effects of sand piling to improve soft soils would be predicted, and the height of preload can be reduced. In this article, sand pile induced excess pressure was predicted by cavity expansion theory, and the predicted values were compared with the field measured values. The results showed fair agreements between the measured and the predicted excess pore pressure.
Theoretical calculation results are presented for the enhancement of the water mass flow rate through the hydrophobic micro/nano pores in the membrane respectively on the micrometer and nanometer scales. The water-pore wall interfacial slippage is considered. When the pore diameter is critically low (less than 1.82nm), the water flow in the nanopore is non-continuum and described by the nanoscale flow equation; Otherwise, the water flow is essentially multiscale consisting of both the adsorbed boundary layer flow and the intermediate continuum water flow, and it is described by the multiscale flow equation. For no wall slippage, the calculated water flow rate through the pore is very close to the classical hydrodynamic theory calculation if the pore diameter (d) is larger than 1.0nm, however it is considerably smaller than the conventional calculation if d is less than 1.0nm because of the non-continuum effect of the water film. When the driving power loss on the pore is larger than the critical value, the wall slippage occurs, and it results in the different scales of the enhancement of the water flow rate through the pore which are strongly dependent on both the pore diameter and the driving power loss on the pore. Both the pressure drop and the critical power loss on the pore for starting the wall slippage are also strongly dependent on the pore diameter.
In this study, the rheological properties of fresh concrete of fresh mortar and concrete were investigated experimentally by shear box test. The pore water pressure in fresh mortar was measured as an influence factor of shear deformation of fresh mortar. As the result, it was clarified that the rheological properties is affected by the pore water pressure in fresh mortar and, the correcting method of shear stress in case of shear box test was obtained.
In the present study, the analytical approaches of vacuum consolidation with horizontal drains were proposed, For dissipating rapidly pore-water in hydraulic fills, vacuum consolidation method applied vacuum pressure in horizontal drains is developed. In the analytical approaches, the governing equation is based on two-dimensional finite strain consolidation theory and the boundary conditions of horizontal drains are considered in applying negative pore-water pressure occurred by vacuum pressure, Also, parametric studies to vacuum pressure and installation pattern of horizontal drains are carried out.
In this study the process of normalizing hydraulic head loss rate was developed for the purpose of estimation of seepage blocking state at each seepage segment in sea dike embankment. Pore water pressure sensors were installed with some interval along seepage path, then the hydraulic head loss rate at each segment between pore water pressure sensors was calculated, and then the calculated hydraulic head loss rate was normalized based on seepage path length. The comparison of normalized hydraulic head loss rates showed that the cross section of sea dike embankment was homogeneous approximately and the width of cross section was long enough to blocking tide water.
Previous research on the slope failure has mainly reported that most of the slope failures occur due to surface rainfall infiltration in the rainy season. A slope of which surface is protected by shotcrete or plants, can also fail due to increase in pore water pressure from the ground water flow beneath the surface, rather than from the surface. In this study such case of slope behavior is investigated using the model test and numerical method including strength reduction method. Hydraulic boundary conditions of the slopes is considered using coupled numerical scheme. The failure mechanism of the slope is investigated and the effect of pore water pressure on slope safety is identified. Increase in pore water pressure due to lateral infiltration has significantly reduced the stability of slope.
This study analyzed pore water pressure, seepage and leakage quantity, height of seepage and critical hydraulic gradient in order to suggest the seepage characteristics of agricultural reservoir embankment considering filter interval. The seepage characteristics of a deteriorated reservoir embankments were conducted according to the horizontal filter intervals range using three- dimensional finite element analysis. The wider the horizontal filter interval, the higher the pore water pressure increased, and the pore water pressure ratio in the center of the core has a greater effect than the base part. The seepage and leakage quantity appeared largely in the two-dimensional analysis conditions (case 1), where the filter was constructed totally in the longitudinal direction of the embankment, the wider the horizontal filter interval was gradually reduced. The reasonable filter intervals to yield efficient seepage characteristics were within 30 m for the pore water pressure of the core and the height of the seepage line. The stability of the filter installation was able to evaluate the stability of the piping by the critical hydraulic gradient method. The deteriorated reservoir with no filters or decreased functionality can significantly reduce the possibility of piping by simply installing a filter on the downstream slope. In the future, the deteriorated reservoir embankment should be checked for the reservoir remodeling because the core and filter functions have been lost or decreased significantly. In the case of a new installation, the seepage characteristic behavior due to the core and filter changes should be applied to the field after obtaining a reasonable horizontal filter interval that satisfies the safety factor by a three-dimensional analysis.
In this study, a laboratory model test on utilization of recycled aggregates and crushed stone as vertical drains to use alternative material of sand in soft ground is performed. The vertical and horizontal coefficient of permeability of the recycled aggregates and crushed stone showed largely 1.2~4.0 times and 3.0~3.3 times greater than sand, respectively. Therefore, it showed enough to be an alternative material to the sand which had been being used as the vertical and horizontal drainage material before. The variations of pore water pressure with time showed constantly regardless of the load in all vertical drainage materials. When water level drops suddenly, the pore water pressure of the recycled aggregate and crushed aggregate is reduced to nearly zero. Therefore, it was applicable to the field because discharge capacity was similarity to that of sand. The settlement in crushed aggregates and recycled aggregate decreases gradually with the load increase. When water level drops suddenly, earth pressure in all drains materials was evaluated the equivalent drainage capacity similarity to sand because it show approaching the nearly zero.
In this study, an experiment with large-scale model was performed according to raising the embankment in order to investigate the behavior of failure for embankment and spillway transitional zone due to overtopping. The pore water pressure, earth pressure, settlement and failure pattern by a rapid drawdown and overtopping were compared and analyzed. The pore water pressure and earth pressure at spillway transitional zone by overtopping increased a rapidly with the expansion of seepage erosion, but the crest showed a smally change due to effect of the inclined core type. And it is considered an useful data that can accurately estimate the possibility of failure of the reservoirs. A settlement at overtopping decreased a rapidly due to failure of crest. The relative settlement difference due to change of the water level at the upstream and downstream slope cause increase largely crack of crest. The behavior of failure by overtopping was gradually enlarged towards reservoirs crest from the bottom of the spillway transition zone, the inclined core after the raising the embankment was influenced significantly to prevent the seepage erosion.
The influence of gas hydrate dissociation on submarine slope stability was studied in this paper. Gas hydrates are stable under high pressure and low temperature conditions. Once gas hydrate dissociates due to natural or human activities, it generates large amount of gas and water. During gas hydrate dissociation, a pore pressure between soil particles increases and results in the loss of an effective stress and degradation of soil stiffness. A pore pressures model was proposed to calculated excess pore pressures generated by gas hydrate dissociation at the Storegga Slide. A slope stability analysis for the Storegga Slide using a two dimensional finite difference method was carried out by considering excess pore pressures due to gas hydrate dissociation. Since the excess pore pressure calculated by the proposed method resulted in the considerable loss of stiffness and strength in slope, a submarine slope failure occurred at the Storegga slide was well simulated.
