Purpose: Capseal I and Capseal II are calcium silicate and calcium phosphate based experimental root canal sealers. This study sought to evaluate the biocompatibility and mineralization potential of Capseal I and Capseal II. Materials and Methods: The biocompatibility and mineralization related gene expression (alkaline phosphatase [ALP], bone sialoprotein [BSP], and osteocalcin) of Capseal I and Capseal II were compared using methylthiazol tetrazolium assay and reverse transcription-polymerization chain reaction analysis, respectively. The results were analyzed by Kruskal-Wallis test. A P-value of <0.05 was considered significant. Result: Both Capseal I and Capseal II were favorable in terms of biocompatibility, influencing the messenger RNA expression of ALP and BSP. Conclusion: Within the limitation of this study, Capseal is biocompatible, with mineralization promoting potential; thus, it could be a promising root canal sealer.
New film forming aromatic poly(amide-imide)s containing isoindoloquinazolinedione (IQ) unit in the backbone chain (polymer XIV) have been successfully synthesized by preparing prepolymers of poly(amic acid-carbonamide). followed by subsequent thermal cyclization of the prepolymers. 4,4-Diamino-3-carbamoylbenzanilide (DACB) V has been synthesized by reduction of 3-carbamoyl-4-amino-4-nitrobenzanilide IV. The prepolymers of poly(amic-acid-carbonamide) (polymers VII and VIII) which exhibit viscosities ranging from 1.4 to 1.7 dl/g have been prepared by a condensation polymerization of monomers such as BPDA, ODA, and DACB. Polymer XIV has been obtained by thermal cyclization of the polymers VII and VIII. During the thermal cyclization reaction, imide ring structure was first introduced and then transformed to the structure of IQ unit. The thermal degradation rate of the resultant polymers were influenced by the cleavage of amide bond but the final char yield was comparable to that of poly(BPDA-ODA).

Biodegradable hydrogels based on glycidyl methacrylate dextran (CMD) and dimethacrylate poly(ethylene glycol) (DMP) were proposed for colon-specific drug delivery. GMD was synthesized by coupling of glycidyl methacylate with dextran in the presence of 4-(N, N-dimethylamino)pyridine (DMAP) using dimethylsulfoxide as a solvent. Methacrylate-terminated poly (ethylene glycol) (PEG) macromer was prepared by the reaction of PEG with methacryloyl chloride. CMD/DMP hydrogels were prepared by radical polymerization of phosphate buffer solution (0.1 M, pH 7.4) of GMD and DMP using ammonium peroxydisulfate (APS) and UV as initiating system. The synthetic GMD, DMP and GMD/DMP hydrogels were characterized by fourier transform infrared (FT-lR) spectroscopy. The FITC-albumin loaded hydrogels were prepared by adding FITC-albumin solution before UV irradiation. Swelling capacity of GMD/DMP hydrogels was controlled not only by molecular weight of dextran, but also by incorporation ratio of DMP Degradation of the hydrogels has been studied in vitro with dextranase. FITC-albumin release from the GMD/DMP hydrogels was affected by molecular weight of nextran and the presence of dextranase in the release medium.

In this study, the silica-based hybrid material with high barrier property was prepared by incorporating ethylene-vinyl alcohol (EVOH) copolymer, which has been utilized as packaging materials due to its superior gas permeation resistance, during sol-gel process. In preparation of this EVOH/$SiO_2$ hybrid coating materials, the (3-glycidoxy-propyl)-trimethoxysilane (GPTMS) as a silane coupling agent was employed to promote interfacial adhesion between organic and inorganic phases. As confirmed from FT-IR analysis, the physical interaction between two phases was improved due to the increased hydrogen bonding, resulting in homogeneous microstructure with dispersion of nano-sized silica particles. However, depending on the range of content of added silane coupling agent (GPTMS), micro-phase separated microstructure in the hybrid could be observed due to insufficient interfacial attraction or possibility of polymerization reaction of epoxide ring in GPTMS. The oxygen barrier property of the mono-layer coated BOPP (biaxially oriented polypropylene) film was examined for the hybrids containing various GPTMS contents. Consequently, it is revealed that GPTMS should be used in an optimum level of content to produce the high barrier EVOH/$SiO_2$ hybrid material with an improved optical transparency and homogeneous phase morphology.
Hydrolysis of manno-oligosaccharides and galactomannan was studied with the purified Bacillus subtilis WL-7 mannanase from recombinant Eschericoli. The predominant products of hydrolysis were mannose, mannobiose and mannotriose. The enzyme could hydrolyze $\beta$-1 A-linked manno-oligosaccharides larger than mannobiose, but was not active on mannobiose. When the mannanase hydrolyzed manno-oligo saccharides of degree of polymerization(DP) 4-6, it was more active on the substrate of higher DP. Based on analysis of transient reaction products by TLC, the enzyme was found to have a preference for internal $\beta$-IA-mannosidic linkages, which are the central mannosidic bond of mannotetraose and the two middle mannosidic bonds of mannopentaose. The $\beta$-l A-mannosidic bonds situated at the second and fourth positions from the nonreducing end of mannohexaose were preferenhydrolyzed by the mannanase. Locust bean gum(LBG) was enzymatically hydrolyzed with higher efficiency than guar gum, resulting that amount of reducing sugars was liberated more efficiently from LBG than guar gum with same activity of mannanase.

Uniform polyaniline nanofibers (PANI NFs), and chemically doped sulfamic acid(SFA) PANI NFs, synthesized via template free interfacial polymerization process, were used as new counter electrodes materials for the fabrication of the highly-efficient dyesensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The PANI NFs based fabricated DSSCs exhibited a solarto-electricity conversion efficiency of ~ 4.02% while, the SFA doped PANI NFs based DSSC demonstrated ~ 27% improvement in the solar-to-electricity conversion efficiency. The obtained solar-to-electricity conversion efficiency for SFA doped PANI NFs based DSSC was 5.47% under 100mW/$cm^2$(AM1.5). The enhancement in the conversion efficiency was due to the incorporation of SFA into the PANI NFs which resulted to the higher electrocatalytic activity for the $I^{3-}/I^-$ redox reaction.
The polysaccharide, (1\longrightarrow5)-$\alpha$-D-ribofuranan, was synthesized by a cationic ring-opening polymerization of 1,4-anhydro-2,3-di-O-benzyl-$\alpha$-D-ribopyranose with the aid of boron trifluoride etherate and subsequent debenzylation. This polysaccharide catalyzed the hydrolysis of ethyl p-nitrophenyl phosphate, uridylyl(3'\longrightarrow5')uridine ammonium salt, and 4-tert-butylcatechol cyclic phosphate N-methyl pyridinium. The polymer also catalyzed the cleavage of nucleic acids (DNA and RNA). The hydrolysis of ethyl p-nitrophenyl phosphate in the presence of the polymer was accelerated by 1.5 ${\times}$ 10$^3$ times relative to the uncatalyzed reaction. The catalytic activity was attributable to the vic-cis-diols of the riboses being located inside the active center that is formed by polymer chain folding; these diols form hydrogen bonds with two phosphoryl oxygen atoms of the phosphates so as to activate the phosphorus atoms to be attacked by nucleophile ($H_2O$).
A series of hydroxyl-derivatized quaternized polymers were successfully synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and Cu(I)-catalyzed 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of azide and alkynes (click chemistry), followed by quaternization reactions. ATRP was employed to synthesize poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA), followed by introduction of alkyne groups using pentynoic acid, leading to HEMA-Alkyne. 2-Azido-1-ethanol and 3-azido-1-propanol were combined with the HEMA-Alkyne backbone via click reaction, resulting in triazole-ring containing hydroxyl-derivatized polymers. Quaternization reactions with methyl iodide were conducted on the triazole ring of each polymer. Molecular weight, molecular weight distribution, and the degree of quaternization (DQ) were determined by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and $^1H$ NMR spectroscopy. The average molecular weight ($M_n$) of the resulting polymers ranged from $5.9{\times}10^4$ to $1.05{\times}10^5g/mol$ depending on the molecular architecture. The molecular weight distribution was low ($M_w/M_n$ = 1.26-1.38). The transmission spectra of the 0.1 wt % aqueous solutions of the resulting quaternized polymers at 650 nm were measured as a function of temperature. Results showed that the upper critical solution temperature (UCST) could be finely controlled by the level of DQ.
A conjugated spirocyclic polymer was synthesized via the cyclopolymerization of 1,1-dipropargyl-1- silacyclohexane with various transition metal catalysts. The monomer, 1,1-dipropargyl-1-silacyclohexane was synthesized by Grignard reaction of 1,1-dichloro-1-silacyclohexane with propargyl magnesium bromide. This polymerization proceeded well to give the corresponding poly(1,1-dipropargyl-1-silacyclohexane). The catalytic activity of WCl6 was found to be similar with that of MoCl5. The structure of polymer having the conjugated backbone with silacyclohexane moieties was characterized by such instrumental methods as NMR (1H-, 13C-), IR, and UV-visible spectroscopies. The resulting polymers were mostly yellow or light-brown powders, depending on the catalyst systems used. This polymer was completely soluble in halogenated and aromatic hydrocarbons such as chloroform, 1,2-dichloromethane, benzene, toluene, and chlorobenzene, etc. The thermal and oxidative stabilities of polymer were also studied and discussed.
When cavity floor is near the pulp, polymerization of light-activated restorations results in temperature increase. This temperature increase cause by both the exothermic reaction process and the energy absorbed during irradiation. Therefore instating base is required. Most frequently used insulating base is glass ionmer. The purpose of this study was to evaluate intrapulpal temperature changes of glass ionomer according to various curing intensity and curing time. Caries and restoration-free mandibular molars extracted within three months were prepared Class I cavity of 3$\times$6mm with high speed handpiece. 1mm depth of dentin was evaluated with micrometer in mesial and distal pulp horns. Pulp chambers were filled with 37.0$\pm$0.1$^{\circ}C$ water to CEJ. Chromium-alumina thermocouple was placed in pulp horn for evaluating of temperature changes. glass ionomer material was placed in 2mm. total curing time was 40s: continuous 40s, intermittent 20s, intermittent 10s. Glass ionomer material was cured with 300mW/$\textrm{cm}^2$, 550mW/$\textrm{cm}^2$ light curing unit. The results were as follows : 1. Temperature in pulp increased as curing unit power is increased. 2. Temperature in pulp more increased continuous emission than intermittent emission.
