  • In this study, the dependency of the behavior of propagating front on the reaction condition in frontal polymerization reaction has been studied. We have used some multifunctional acrylates as a monomer and ammonium persulfate as an initiator for the polymerization reactions. In frontal polymerization, a method of producing polymeric materials via a thermal front that propagates through the unreacted monomer/initiator solution, the behavior of self propagating front shows various dynamic patterns depending on the reaction condition. We have obtained some spin modes of propagating front in the number of 'hot spots' or 'spin heads' by changing the reaction condition. The effect of the reactor tube diameter on the mode of propagating front has also been studied by using some reactor tubes with different size of tube diameter and it has been examined in some detail by adopting an experimental method of two-tubes system.

  • Steel tire cords were coated via RF Plasma Polymerization of acetylene in order to enhance adhesion to rubber compounds. Adhesion of tire cords was measured by TACT as a function of plasma polymerization and argon etching conditions such as power, treatment time and chamber pressure. Tested tire cords were analysed by SEM to elucidate the adhesion mechanism. The highest adhesion values were obtained with argon etching condition at 90W, 10min, 30mtorr followed by acetylene plasma polymerization condition at 10W, 30sec., 30mtorr. In SEM analysis, the plasma polymerized tire cord at the optimized condition showed 100% rubber coverage as observed from brass-plated steel tire cords.

  • In this study, suspension polymerized toners were prepared by using poly(vinyl alcohol)(PVA) as an organic suspending agent. Styrene and butylacrylate monomers were used simultaneously with carbon black to prepare microspherical polymerized toners with a narrow-particle size distribution. Preliminary particles without carbon black were polymerized first to optimize suspension polymerization conditions. The preliminary particles were prepared at various polymerization conditions and their characteristics were compared to each other to determine an optimized polymerization condition. The black polymerized toner prepared at the optimized polymerization condition showed reasonable particle size and shape, and good thermal and printing characteristics by showing its glass transition temperature at $53.6^{\circ}C$.

  • In this study, investigation on the polymerization characteristics of isoprene through nitroxide mediated controlled/"living" radical polymerization techniques was attempted. In the presence of acetol, linear increase of isoprene conversion with time and low polydispersities of the resulting polymers ($M_w/M_n$ < 1.5) were observed, which suggest successful controlled/"living" radical polymerization of isoprene. The microstructure of the resulting polyisoprene was composed of $\sim$ 22% of 3, 4, $\sim$30% of 1, 4-cis and $\sim$ 48% of 1, 4-trans. The optimum polymerization temperature was 145 $^{circ}C$, below which no significant polymerization behavior was observed. Non-cyclic nitroxide, such as di-tert-butyl nitroxide (DTBN) could not mediate the polymerization, whereas cyclic nitroxides (2, 2, 6, 6-tetramethyl-1-peperidine 1-oxyl (TEMPO) and 4-oxo-2, 2, 6, 6-tetramethyl-1-peperidine 1-oxyl (oxoTEMPO)) were successfully employed for the polymerization. However, isoprene dimerization reaction through Diels-Alder process was also observed at the given polymerization condition, which afforded a significant amount of limonene. Isoprene thermal autoinitiation was also possible, which was, however, considered to be not significant under the given polymerization condition.

  • The runaway reaction was analyzed experimently and theoretically at the batch styrene suspension polymerization process. In the experiments, the reaction temperature with time was measured at various experimental conditions. According to the experimental results, the risk of the runaway reaction was increased with increasing the ratio of the monomer(styrene, M) to the dispersion medium(water, W), the concentration of the initiator(BPO), and the monomer mass, respectively. And simulation results showed that the runaway reaction was significantly affected by the reaction rate constant of the propagation and that the phenomena of the runaway reaction occurred at about 70% conversion. Also, we found that the runaway reaction did not occur under the operating condition of below 0.5 for M/W, approximate 3 wt% BPO, and below 75$^{\circ}C$ for the cooling temperature.

  • In order to investigate the possibility of PVA particle as toner, PVA/PVAc particle was manufactured. Fine spherical PVAc particle with emulsifier SDS(sodium Dodecyl Sulfate) and initiator V-50(2,2'- azo bis(2-amidinopropane) dihydrochloride) was manufactured by emulsion polymerization. And then, the PVAc was carried with surface saponification. PVA/PVAc skin core structured particle was obtained under optimum saponification condition. PVA skin side in manufactured PVA/PVAc particles was dyed with 1:2 metal complex type C. I. Acid Yellow 235 and then the dyed PVA particles were observed with a optical microscope. Under given polymerization condition such as SDS concentration, $1.62\times{10}^{-2} \;mol/lH_2O$, V-50 concetration, $3.7\times{10}^{-3}\;mol/lH_2O$ and temperature $50^\circ{C}$ , the high molecular weight of PVAc with Pn 13,900 and PVA with Pn 3,400 was produced. The particle distribution of obtained PVAc microspheres was appeared highly at 60 and $100\mu{m}$, respectively.

  • Investigated was the effect of the crucial polymerization conditions such as methyl acrylate(MA) mole fraction in feed, polymerization temperature and time on Atom Radical Transfer Polymerization(ATRP) behavior of styrene and methyl acrylate(MA). As MA mole fraction in feed increased, molecular weight(MW) of the resulting copolymer increased. At polymerization time of 3 hrs the composition of MA in the resulting copolymer was shown to have a linear relationship with the mole fraction of MA in feed. MW was increased and the composition of MA in copolymer was decreased as the polymerization time increased, showing the characteristics of ATRP. MW was also increased as polymerization temperature increased, and the composition of MA in copolymer was shown to be increased drastically at polymerization temperature of $110^{\circ}C$.

  • Lanthanide diphthalocyanines have interesting properties on electrochemical and chemical redox reactions. It is however, difficult to use because of thier short device life. Plasma-polymerization attends to improvement thier device life. Yb-diphthalocyanine ($YbPc_2$) polymer film was deposited in a parallel plate electrodes-type RF plasma reactor. $YbPc_2$ was sublimed into the argon plasma, and polymer film was obtained on a substrate. Radio frequency was constant of 13.56MHz. Pressure of argon gas, sublimation rate of $YbPc_2$ and RF power were variable parameters depending on film quality. Surface of polymer films include a lot of sub-micron order lumps. It was indicated that size of lumps depends on polymerization degree controled by parameters. Size of lumps and polymerization degree are increased with RF power. However, by the high RF power over 40W, polymerization degree is decreased with RF power and surface of film is rough. In condition of RF power is high, polymerization will compete with etching of film. We obtained good films for electrochromic display with RF power of 20W, argon gas pressure of 8.0 Pa and sublimationrate of $1.2 \times 10$ mol/min, and good films for gas sensor with RF power of 30W, argon gas pressure of 10.6Pa and sublimation rate of $1.2 \times 10$ mol/min.

  • The viscosity for hi-solid pressure sensitive adhesive to improve water soluble low viscosity pressure sensitive adhesive polymerized using seeded polymerization. While seed binder polymerizing it produces an optimum polymerization condition, and acrylic acid and seed binder concentration changed were measurement of viscosity variation and adhesive power at the substrate (SUS420J) as flowing results. In adhesive polymerization, seed binder concentration 7 wt%/monomer was recovered 60% of solid content, 2,100 cps of low viscosity and clear adhesive film. When acrylic acid content was 4 wt%/monomer, it was turned excellent adhesive power and holding power.
