  • Tin-doped indium oxide(ITO) thin films were deposited on polyethylene terephthalate(PET) at room temperature by oxygen ion beam assisted evaporator system and the effects of oxygen gas flow rate on the properties of room temperature ITO thin films were investigated. Plasma characteristics of the ion gun such as oxygen ions and atomic oxygen radicals as a function of oxygen flow rate were investigated using optical emission spectroscopy(OES). Faraday cup also used to measure oxygen ion density. The increase of oxygen flow rate to the ion gun generally increase the optical transmittance of the deposited ITO up to 6sccm of $O_2$ and the further increase of oxygen flow rate appears to saturate the optical transmittance. In the case of electrical property, the resistivity showed a minimum at 6 sccm of $O_2$ with the increase of oxygen flow rate. Therefore, the improved ITO properties at 6 sccm of $O_2$ appear to be more related to the incorporation of low energy oxygen radicals to deposited ITO film rather than the irradiation of high energy oxygen ions to the substrate. At an optimal deposition condition, ITO thin films deposited on PET substrates showed the resistivity of $6.6{\times}10^{-4}$ ${\Omega}$ cm and optical transmittance of above 90%.

  • Recently, the detection of pH with real-time and in vivo has been focal pointed in the environmental or medical fields. In this work, we developed the pH sensor using graphene sheet. Graphene has high biocompatibility. We fabricated flexible solution-gated field-effect transistors (SGFETs) on graphene sheet transferred on the polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrate to detect pH in electrolyte solution. The gate length was $500{\mu}m$ and the gate width was 8 mm. We evaluated the current-voltage (I-V) transfer characteristics of graphene SGFETs in pH solution. The drain-source current ($I_{DS}$) and the gate-source voltage ($V_{GS}$) curves of graphene SGFETs were depended on pH value. The Dirac point of graphene SGFETs linearly shifted to the positive direction about 19.32 mV/pH depending on the pH value in electrolyte solution.

  • In this study, a sensor for detection of nitric oxide (NO) gas was developed using petroleum pitch-based activated carbon which was synthesized from pyrolysis fuel oil (PFO). Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) was added to increase molecular weight by stimulating a polymerization of components in PFO during the pitch synthesis process. The increase in the molecular weight of pitch contributed to the improvement of textural properties of activated carbon, such as the specific surface area and micropore volume. It also enhanced the sensitivity of NO gas sensor based on the activated carbon. In addition, the effect of PET addition during the pitch synthesis on the surface oxygen content and conductivity of activated carbon was investigated. Finally, the correlation of the sensitivity with physical properties of activated carbon was analyzed.

  • Shrink film is currently being used for plastic container lavels to avoid the use of glue. Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottle lavels also use shrink films in the same PET materials for easy recycling of PET bottles. An air layer is generated between the shrink film and PET bottle surface due to the bent shape of the bottle surface. This air layer can insulate external heat, as air has a relatively lower thermal conductivity. In this study, the insulation property of the air layer was examined by computer simulation. Two PET bottle models were used, one with and the other without an air layer between the PET bottle surface and lavel. The two bottle models were filled with cold liquid and exposed to room temperature for 6 h, and the temperatures of the contents were then compared. The results showed that the temperature of the contents in the bottle with the air layer was lower than that without the air layer by at least $2^{\circ}C$. This study suggests an effective lavel design of PET bottles while ensuring that the temperature of the bottle contents is maintained.

  • In this study, octadecyldimethyl(3-triethoxy silylpropyl)ammonium chloride (ODDMAC) incorporated with Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) fabrics with different environmental conditions such as various temperature and time intervals. First, ODDMAC (15 weight %) was dissolved in ethanol. Then PET fabrics immersed in the ODDMAC solution at 25 ℃ for 10 minutes and dried at 80 ℃ for 5 minutes. The dried PET/PDDMAC fabrics carried out for curing process out at 110 ℃ ~ 190 ℃. The treated PET/ODDMAC has examined the surface and side coating properties through SEM analysis and elemental analysis. PET/ODDMAC fabric washed with water up to 50 times and studied the durability of the materials. It was confirmed that the treated PET fabric also exhibited good water repellency. In addition, the antimicrobial activity against the gram-positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus and gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli were studied by the disc diffusion method on the treated fabric.

  • Al doped ZnO(AZO) films as a transparent conductive oxide (TCO) electrode were deposited on glass, polyethylene naphthalate (PEN) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) at room temperature by a conventional rf-magneton sputtering (CMS) and a facing target sputtering (FTS) using Al2O3 and ZnO targets. In order to investigation of AZO properties, the structural, surface morphology, electrical, and optical characteristics of AZO films were respectively analyzed. The resistivities of AZO films using FTS system were $6.50{\times}10-4{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$ on glass, $7.0{\times}10-4{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$ on PEN, and $7.4{\times}10-4{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$ on PET substrates, while the values of AZO films using CMS system were $7.6{\times}10-4{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$ on glass, $1.20{\times}10-3{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$ on PEN, and $1.58{\times}10-3{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$ on PET substrates. The AZO-films deposited by FTS system showed uniform surface compared to those of the films by CMS system. We thought that the films deposited by FTS system had low stress due to bombardment of high energetic particles during CMS process, resulted in enhanced electrical conductivity and crystalline quality by highly c-axis preferred orientation and closely packed nano-crystalline of AZO films using FTS system.

  • Plastic waste is becoming a problem in various countries because of the difficulty of natural decomposition. One type is PET plastic(Polyethylene Terephthalate), which is often used as a bottle for soft drink packaging, and LDPE(Low Density Polyethylene), which is also widely used as a food or beverage packaging material. The use of these two types of plastic continuously, without good recycling, will have a negative impact on the environment. Building material waste is also becoming a serious environmental problem. This study aims to provide a solution to the problem of the above plastic waste and building material waste by making them into a mixture to be used as bricks. Research is carried out by mixing both materials, namely plastic heated at a temperature of $180-220^{\circ}C$ and building material waste that had been crushed and sized to 30-40 mesh with homogeneous stirring. The ratios of PET and LDPE plastic to building material waste are 9 : 1, 8 : 2, 7 : 3, 6 : 4 and 5 : 5. After heating and printing, density, water absorption and compressive strength tests are carried out. Addition of PET and LDPE plastic can increase compressive strength, and reduce water absorption, porosity and density. A maximum compressive strength of 10.5 MPa is obtained at the ratio of 6 : 4.

  • The relationships among mechanical properties, rheological properties, and morphology by reactive extrusion based on commingled pckaging film wastes contains polypropylene (PP) pckaging film system [PP/polyethylene (PE)/aluminum (Al)/poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET)] and Nylon packaging film system[Nylon/PE/linear-low density polyethylene (LLDPE)] were investigated to improve the compatibility and toughness of these wastes using various compatibilizers such as ethylene vinylacetate (EVA), styrene-ethylene/butylene-styrene triblock copolymer (SEBS), styrene-ethylene/butylene-styrene-graft-maleic anhydride copolymer (SEBS-g-MA), polyethylene-graft-maleic anhydride (PE-g-MA), polypropylene-graft-maleic anhydride (PP-g-MA) , polyethylene-graft-acrylic acid (PE-g-AA) and polypropylene-graft-acrylic acid (PP-g-AA). Compared with simple melt blend system, the blends showed improvement of about $50\%$ increase in physical properties when SEBS and EVA were added. However, SEBS-g-MA thermoplastic elastomer which is highly reactive with amine terminal group of nylon, resulted in about $200\%$ increase in impact strength. This compatibilization effect resulted from the increase of interfacial adhesion and the reduction of domain size of dispersed phase in PP/Nylon blend system.

  • Poly(ethylene terephthalate)(PET) is one of the most widely used materials in textile industry. It can have a low cost, silk-like handle, and excellent mechanical properties. Low thermal stability of PET had been a common problem limiting its high temperature application. The polyester have been known to have the disadvantage of degradation under ionized irradiation compared to crosslikable polymers such as polyethylene, polypropylene and polystylene. To improve thermal stability of PET, the PET films were photocrosslinked by UV irradiation. A hydrogen-abstractable photoinitiator was used to photocrosslink of PET by continuous UV irradiation. Photoinitiator addition increased the gel fraction. The photocrosslinking was attributed to the recombination of PET radicals generated upon UV irradiation, which was enhanced by the hydrogen abstraction of the PET polymer chains by the added photoinitiator. Also the crosslinked PET showed higher thermal stability and mechanical strength with increasing UV energy. Polyester type films such as poly(ethylene naphthalate)(PEN) and poly(butylene terephthalte)(PBT) were also increased the gel fraction and improved thermal stability and mechanical properties by UV irradiation.
