  • Multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)/polycarbonate (PC) nanocomposite was prepared by direct melt mixing to investigate the effect of the shear rate on the surface resistivity of the nanocomposites. In this study, an experiment was carried out to observe the shear induced orientation of the MWCNT in the polymer matrix using a very simple melt flow indexer with various loads. The compression-molded, should be eliminated. MWCNT/PC nanocomposite sample exhibited lower percolation thresholds (at 0.8 vol%) and higher electrical conductivity values than those of samples extruded by capillary and injection molding. Shear induced orientation of MWCNT was observed via scanning electron microscopy, in the direction of flow in a PC matrix during the extrusion process. The surface resistivity rose with increasing shear rate, because of the breakdown of the network junctions between MWCNTs. For real applications such as injection molding and the extrusion process, the amount of the MWCNT in the composite should be carefully selected to adjust the electrical conductivity.

  • Indium tin oxide(ITO) thin film was deposited at room temperature on polycarbonate(PC) substrate by in-line sputter system. ITO sputtering process was carried out at a various pressure for the reduction of ion damage on PC substrate and the electrical and the optical properties of deposited ITO films were obtained and analyzed. From the experimental results, the sheet resistances of as-deposited ITO films varied with a different pressure and the optical transmittances at visible wavelength were maintained above 85%. The results are considered to be related to the pressure of oxygen atoms as a reaction gas.

  • As a method of simple patterning of transparent conductive oxide (TCO) films deposited on flexible substrates, laser direct etching was carried out on TCO films sputtered on polycarbonate (PC) substrates. As a result of different binding energies in TCO films, indium tin oxide (ITO) and indium gallium zinc oxide (IGZO) were more easily etched than zinc oxide with different $Nd:YVO_4$ laser beam conditions.

  • Fracture behaviors of polycarbonate (PC)/polyestrercarbonate (PEC) blends and their miscibility have been examined to find out the mechanism of ductilie-brittle transition of fracture behavior which would be a main governing factor on the thickness sensitivity of impact strength of PC. $T_g$ measurement showed that PEC with a carbonate content higher than 30 mol% was miscible with PC. In the notched Izod impact test of PC, ductile-brittle transition occurred in the range of 4 to 5 mm thickness. The impact strength of miscible PC/PEC5 blends ductile-fractured in the thin specimens decreased with increasing PEC5 content, which was in accordance with the decrease of elongation at break in tensile test. In the brittle fracture of the thick specimens, the impact strength was well correlated with the plastic zone size in the vicinity of the notch tip.

  • Surface of PC (Polycarbonate) and PES (Polyethersulphone) treated by plasma modification with rf power from 50 W to 200 W substrates in Ar (3 sccm), $O_2$ (12 sccm) atmosphere. From the results of modified substrates in XPS (X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy), the ratio of oxide containing bond increased with rf power. As the rf power was 200 W, the contact angle was the lowest value of 14.09 degree. And the datum from AFM (Atomic Force Microscopy), rms roughness value of PES and PC substrates increased with rf power. We could deposit $Ta_2O_5$ with good adhesion on plasma treated PES and PC substrates using by in-situ rf magnetron sputter.

  • UV curable hard and color coatings were formed on polycarbonate(PC) films. The coating materials were composed of a commercially available end-capped polyester(EB830), diacrylate monomer(HDDA), silicon acrylate, photoinitiator, and organic dye as a coloring agent. The surface properties of coating films were evaluated, and the influences of the compositions of coating materials were investigated. The coating films showed high transmission and good adhesion between coating layer and PC substrate. And the coating films exhibited higher hardness than bare PC film. The coating films with various colors were obtained by wet process, and the clear and color window lenses for mobile phone were prepared successfully.

  • Mechanical properties, flow characteristics and chemical resistance of polycarbonate (PC)/polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) /impact modifier (IM) blends were investigated over the various composition ranges of PC and PBT. Mechanical properties of the PC/PBT/IM blends for different IMs, butadiene based IM and butyl acrylate based IM, were studied for various compositions of the IMs. Impact strength at low temperature was also observed. For the study of chemical resistance of the PC/PBT/IM blends, the blonds were dipped in organic solvent, thinner, and then variations of mechanical properties were analyzed. Tensile and flexural strengths were increased linearly and heat distortion temperature (HDT) also increased as PC content in the blends increased. Impact strength increased drastically as PC content increased up to 50 wt% and stayed stable value. Flowability decreased as PC content increased. Impact strengths of the blend were various for different IMs. Butyl acrylate based IM showed slightly higher impact strength than butadiene based IM for the temperature above $0^{\circ}C$. However, butadiene based IM showed remarkably higher impact strength than butyl acrylate based IM for the temperature below $0^{\circ}C$. Through the experiment of chemical resistance it was observed that tensile and flexural strengths decreased, and impact strength increased as PC content in the blends increased. PC in the blend would become mild and ductile when it contacted with organic solvent. Thus the impact strength increased while tensile and flexural strength decreased.

  • Liquid crystalline (LC) poly(ethylene terephthalate-co-2(3)-chloro-1,4-phenylene terephthalate) (50/50, mole/mole) [PECPT] was synthesized and blended with polycarbonate (PC). LC properties of PECPT and thermal, morphological, and rheological behaviors of the PECPT/PC blend were studied. PECPT showed the nematic LC phase and much longer relaxation time than poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET). The apparent melt viscosity of PECPT was one third of that of FET. An abrupt torque change was observed during the blending process due to the orientation of LC domains. For the blends containing 10~30 wt% of PECPT, the complex viscosities were higher than that of PC. As PECPT content increases above 40 wt%, shear thinning was observed. The lowest complex viscosity was obtained at 40~50 wt%. Transesterification of PECPT and PC was confirmed by the selective chemical degradation of carbonate groups in PC.

  • By combining ultrasonic energy which is essential for the chain scission of polymer molecules and a multifunctional agent (MFA) having double bonds at its ends, we were able to modify the molecular structure of polycarbonate (PC) from linear to a branched structure during melt processing. The three double bonds in chain ends of MFA were expected to act as sites for trapping macroradicals of PC during the course of ultrasound-assisted mixing process. The transformation of molecular structure of PC was confirmed by the measurements of rheological properties of the modified PC. After the ultrasonic irradiation of PC together with MFA, increase in complex viscosities and shear-thinning behavior were observed. The Cole-Cole plot and measurement of extensional viscosities revealed the characteristic features of branched structure with well-defined extensional behavior which is comparable to that of a commercial branched PC.

  • Polymer blends containing poly(acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene) (ABS) and polycarbonate(PC) (70/30, wt%) with compatibilizer were prepared using twin screw extruder. Compatibilizers were prepared by reactive extrusion with the ABS, maleic anhydride(MAH) and dicumyl peroxide(DCP) using twin screw extruder In the ABS/PC (70/30) blends, tensile strength did not change significantly, but increased from 52.25 to 55.03 MPa when the ABS-g-MAH was added in the amount of 5 phr. From the results of rheological properties, storage modulus of the ABS/PC/ABS-g-MAH blends at low frequencies showed lager value than that of the ABS/PC(70/30) blend. From the results of the morphological properties of the ABS/PC(70/30) blend, it was observed that the drop size of the PC ranged from 1.2 to $1.5\;{\mu}m$ and did not change significantly with the addition of the ABS-g-MAH($1{\sim}10\;phr$). From the results of the storage modulus, complex viscosity, and tensile strength of the ABS/PC (70/30) blends, it is found that the ABS-g-MAH is an effective compatibilizer in the ABS/PC (70/30) blends when the ABS-g-MAH is added in the amount of 5 phr.
