  • While commercial polystyrene-based ion exchange membranes have simple manufacturing processes, they also possess poor durability due to their brittleness. Poly(ethylene glycol)methyl ether methacrylate with hydrophilic side chains of poly(ethylene glycol) was used as a co-monomer to make the membranes have improved flexibility. Hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity of the anion exchange membranes were able to be adjusted by varying the chain lengths of the poly(ethylene glycol). For the preparation of the anion exchange membranes, a porous PE substrate was immersed into monomer solutions and thermally polymerized. The prepared membranes were subsequently reacted with trimethylamine to produce anion exchange functional groups, Quaternary ammonium salts. The prepared pore-filled anion exchange membranes were evaluated in terms of ion exchange capacity, electric resistance, elongation at break and water uptake.

  • ABA type block copolymers composed of poly($\gamma-benzyl$ L-glutamate) (PBLG) as the A component and poly (ethylene glycol) as the B component were obtained by polymerization of $\gamma-benzyl$ L-gletamate N -carboxyanhydride, initiated by amino groups at both ends of poly(ethylene glycol) . From circular dichroism measurements in ethylene dichloride solution as well as from infrared spectTa measurements in solid state, it was found that the polypep- tide block exists in the a-helical conformation, as in PBLG homopolymer. $Poly-N^5$ (3-hydroxypropyl glutamine) (PHPG)/poly(ethylene glycol)block copolymer hydrogel was obtained by the treatment of PBLG/PBG block copolymer with the mixture of 3-ammine-1-propanol and diamlnooctane. The water content of PHPG/PEG block copolymer hydrogel was about 80wt% when the concentration of crosslinking agent was below 5 mole % per polymer.

  • Poly(ethylene 2,6-naphthalate) (PEN)/Poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) copolymers were synthesized by two step reaction during the melt copolymerization process. The first step was the esterification reaction of dimethyl-2,6-naphthalenedicarbox-ylate (2,6-NDC) and ethylene glycol (EG). The second step was the condensation polymerization of bishydroxyethylnaphthalate (BHEN) and PEG. The copolymers contained 10 mol% of PEG units with different molecular weights. Structures and thermal properties of the copolymers were studied by using $^1{H-NMR}$, DSC, TGA, etc. Especially, while the intrinsic viscosities of PEN/PEG copolymers increased with increasing molecular weights of PEG, but the glass transition temperature, the cold crystallization temperature, and the weight loss temperature of the copolymers decreased with increasing molecular weights of PEG. Consequently, the hydrophilicities by means of contact angle measurement and moisture content of the copolymer films were found to be significantly improved with increasing molecular weights of PEG.

  • The modified poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) was synthesized by copolymerizing dimethyl terephthalate with ethylene glycol, polyethyleneglycol, and dodecylbenzene sulfonate as a surfactant. After characterization of viscosity, color, and contant angle, hydrophilic characteristics of the modified PET depending on additives was discussed.

  • Waterborne polyurethane as a new polymer electrolyte was synthesized by using relatively hydrophilic polyols. The morphology of polyurethane was changed as it was dispersed in water. In contrast to polyurethane ionomer, waterborne polyurethane did not form an ionic cluster but produced a binary system composed of hydrophilic and hydrophobic groups. In the colloidal system, the former and the latter existed at outward and inward, respectively. Waterborne polyurethane was prepared from poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) /poly(propylene glycol) (PPG) copolymer, 4,4'-diphenylmethane diisocyanate(MDI), ethylene diamine as a chain extender, and three ionization agents, 1,3-propane sultone, sodium hydride and lithium hydroxide. PEG/PPG copolymer was used for suppressing the crystallinity of PEG and N-H bond was ionized for increasing the electrochemical stability of polyurethane. Low molecular weight poly(ethylene glycol) and poly(ethylene glycol dimethyl ether) (PEGDME) were used as plasticizers. DSC, FT-IR and $^1$H-NMR of the waterborne polyurethane were measured. Also, the ionic conductivity of solid polymer electrolytes based on waterborne polyurethane and various concentrations of low molecular weight poly(ethylene glycol) or PEGDME were measured by AC impedance.

  • The aim of this study is to prepare biodegradable microspheres without use of any kind of surfactants or emulsifiers for a novel sustained delivery carriers of protein drugs. Poly(e-caprolactone)/poly(ethylene glycol)/poly(e-caprolactone) (CEC) triblock copolymer was synthesized by ring-opening of e-caprolactone with dihydroxy poly(ethylene glycol) and was used to make surfactant-free microspheres. • In this study polymer electrolytes containing ethylene carbonate group which have a high dielectric constant and poly(ethylene glycol) as branches were prepared by the Williamson reaction between poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether and block copolymers composed of glycerol-1,2-carbonate and 4-chloromethyl styrene. Interestingly, the highest ionic conductivity of $1.75{\times}10^{-5}S\;cm^{-1}$ was observed from the polymer electrolyte having 7 mol% of ethylene carbonate and the [EO]:[Li] ratio of 32:1. Moreover, it was found that the electrochemical stability of polymer electrolyte was achieved up to 5.5 V because of the presence of ethylene carbonate.

  • Biodegradable poly((R)-3-hydroxy butyrate) and poly(ethylene glycol) was conjugated to make amphiphilic di-block copolymer. Folate was conjugated at di-block copolymer to target the cancer cells. Copolymer was ready to form the self-assembled micelle whose size was 125~156 nm in aqueous solution. Griseofulvin as a hydrophobic drug was loaded in nanoparticles. Their loading efficiencies were 35~56%. Hydrophobic drug was continuously released for 24 h. Cell viability test showed that folate attached particles were 10% more efficient than the particles without targeting ligands.
