Directional couplers based on plasmonic waveguides with nano-scale three channels are designed by utilizing mode coupling effect as well as rib-guiding structure. Longitudinal modal transmission-line theory(L-MTLT) is used for simulating the light propagation and optimizing the design parameters. The designed plasmonic coupler operating as power splitter has nano-scale size of about 200~250 nm width. In order to achieve the desired power splitting ratio, the refractive index of guiding modes is evaluated along the width variation of center channel. Finally, a power splitter based on triple rib directional coupler, which ensures maximum power transfer from one outermost guide to the other outermost guide, is designed.

In this paper, we numerically study both band-pass and band-stop plasmonic filters based on Metal-Insulator-Metal (MIM) waveguides and circular ring resonators. The band-pass filter consists of two MIM waveguides coupled to each other by a circular ring resonator. The band-stop filter is made up of an MIM waveguide coupled laterally to a circular ring resonator. The propagating modes of Surface Plasmon Polaritons (SPPs) are studied in these structures. By substituting a portion of the ring core with air, while the outer dimensions of the ring resonator are kept constant, we illustrate the possibility of red-shift in resonant wavelengths in order to tune the resonance modes of the proposed filters. This feature is useful for integrated circuits in which we have limitations on the outer dimensions of the filter structure and it is not possible to enlarge the dimension of the ring resonator to reach to longer resonant wavelengths. The results are obtained by a 2D finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. The introduced structures have potential applications in plasmonic integrated circuits and can be simply fabricated.

Nano-scale power splitter based on curved plasmonic waveguides are designed by utilizing the multimode interference (MMI) coupler. To analyze easily the adaptive properties of plasmonic curverd multimode interference coupler(PC-MMIC), the curved form transforms equivalently into a planar form by using conformal transformation method. Also, effective dielectric method and longitudinal modal transmission-line theory are used for simulating the light propagation and optimizing the structural parameters at 3-D guiding geometry. The designed $2{\times}2$ PC-MMIC does not work well for quasi-TM mode case due to the bending structure, and it does not exist 3dB coupling property, in which the power splitting ratio is 50%:50%, for quasi-TE mode case. Further, the coupling efficiency is better when the signal is incident at channel with large curvature radius than small curvature radius.
A significant enhancement of the magneto-optical Faraday rotation and extraordinary optical transmission (EOT) in the cascaded double-fishnet (CDF) structure with periodic rectangular apertures is theoretically predicted by using the extended finite difference time domain (FDTD) method. The results demonstrate that the transmittance spectrum of the CDF structure has two EOT resonant peaks in a broad spectrum spanning visible to near-infrared wavebands, one of them coinciding with the enhanced Faraday rotation and large figure of merit (FOM) at the same wavelength. It is most important that the resonant position and intensity of the transmittance, Faraday rotation and FOM can be simply tailored by adjusting the incident wavelength, the thickness of the magnetic layer, and the offset between two metallic rectangular apertures, etc. Furthermore, the intrinsic physical mechanism of the resonance characteristics of the transmittance and Faraday rotation is thoroughly studied by investigating the electromagnetic field distributions at the location of resonance. It is shown that the transmittance resonance is mainly determined by different hybrid modes of surface plasmons (SPs) and plasmonic electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) behavior, and the enhancement of Faraday rotation is mostly governed by the plasmonic electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA) behavior and the conversion of the transverse magnetic (TM) mode and transverse electric (TE) mode in the magnetic dielectric layer.
In this paper, metal insulator metal (MIM) plasmonic slot cavity narrow band-pass filters (NBPFs) are studied. The metal and dielectric of the structures are silver (Ag) and air, respectively. To improve the quality factor and attenuation range, two novel NBPFs based on tapered structures and double cavity systems are proposed and numerically analyzed by using the two-dimensional (2-D) finite difference time domain (FDTD) method. The impact of different parameters on the transmission spectrum is scrutinized. We have shown that increasing the cavities' lengths increases the resonance wavelength in a linear relationship, and also increases the quality factor, and simultaneously the attenuation of the wave transmitted through the cavities. Furthermore, increasing the slope of tapers of the input and output waveguides decreases attenuation of the wave transmitted through the waveguide, but simultaneously decreases the quality factor, hence there should be a trade-off between loss and quality factor. However, the idea of adding tapers to the waveguides' discontinuities of the simple structure helps us to improve the device total performance, such as quality factor for the single cavity and attenuation range for the double cavity. According to the proposed NBPFs, two, three, and four-port power splitters functioning at 1320 nm and novel ultra-compact two-wavelength and triple-wavelength demultiplexers in the range of 1300-1550 nm are proposed and the impacts of different parameters on their performances are numerically investigated. The idea of using tapered waveguides at the structure discontinuities facilitates the design of ultra-compact demultiplexers and splitters.
In this study, we introduce a sensing platform based on a plasmonic metasurface absorber (MA) with a vertical nanogap for the ultrasensitive detection of monolayer molecules. The vertical nanogap of the MA, where the extremely high near-field is uniformly distributed and exposed to the external environment, is formed by an under-cut structure between a metallic cross nanoantenna and the mirror layer. The accessible sensing area and the enhanced near-field of the MA further enhance the sensitivity of surface-enhanced infrared absorption for the target molecule of 1-octadecanethiol. To provide strong coupling between the molecular vibrations and plasmonic resonance, the design parameters of the MA with a vertical nanogap are numerically designed.

The manufacturing cost of thin-film photovoltics can potentially be lowered by minimizing the amount of a semiconductor material used to fabricate devices. Thin-film solar cells are typically only a few micrometers thick, whereas crystalline silicon (c-Si) wafer solar cells are $180{\sim}300\mu}m$ thick. As such, thin-film layers do not fully absorb incident light and their energy conversion efficiency is lower compared with that of c-Si wafer solar cells. Therefore, effective light trapping is required to realize commercially viable thin-film cells, particularly for indirect-band-gap semiconductors such as c-Si. An emerging method for light trapping in thin film solar cells is the use of metallic nanostructures that support surface plasmons. Plasmon-enhanced light absorption is shown to increase the cell photocurrent in many types of solar cells, specifically, in c-Si thin-film solar cells and in poly-Si thin film solar cell. By proper engineering of these structures, light can be concentrated and coupled into a thin semiconductor layer to increase light absorption. In many cases, silver (Ag) nanoparticles (NP) are formed either on the front surface or on the rear surface on the cells. In case of poly-Si thin film solar cells, Ag NPs are formed on the rear surface of the cells due to longer wavelengths are not perfectly absorbed in the active layer on the first path. In our cells, shorter wavelengths typically 300~500 nm are also not effectively absorbed. For this reason, a new concept of plasmonic nanostructure which is NPs formed both the front - and the rear - surface is worth testing. In this simulation Al NPs were located onto glass because Al has much lower parasitic absorption than other metal NPs. In case of Ag NP, it features parasitic absorption in the optical frequency range. On the other hand, Al NP, which is non-resonant metal NP, is characterized with a higher density of conduction electrons, resulting in highly negative dielectric permittivity. It makes them more suitable for the forward scattering configuration. In addition to this, Ag NP is located on the rear surface of the cell. Ag NPs showed good performance enhancement when they are located on the rear surface of our cells. In this simulation, Al NPs are located on glass and Ag NP is located on the rear Si surface. The structure for the simulation is shown in figure 1. Figure 2 shows FDTD-simulated absorption graphs of the proposed and reference structures. In the simulation, the front of the cell has Al NPs with 70 nm radius and 12.5% coverage; and the rear of the cell has Ag NPs with 157 nm in radius and 41.5% coverage. Such a structure shows better light absorption in 300~550 nm than that of the reference cell without any NPs and the structure with Ag NP on rear only. Therefore, it can be expected that enhanced light absorption of the structure with Al NP on front at 300~550 nm can contribute to the photocurrent enhancement.
In this paper we propose a plasmonic color filter with a novel nanopattern. The suggested pattern, called a "polyperiodic hole array" (PPHA), is introduced to solve the angle dependence of the optical response that originates from the periodic structure. We set the diameter and period of the hole to make a green color filter, and set the unit-cell size and metal and dielectric thicknesses in consideration of the propagation length and skin depth. The periodic hole arrays are locally rotated to make a PPHA pattern, resulting in a globally aperiodic yet partially periodic pattern. As a result, compared to a general pattern, the PPHA nanostructured color filter has a maximum 40% improvement in spectral shift when the angle of incidence is increased from 0° to 30°. Transmittance reduction was also alleviated by 30%. This work will improve the performance of nanostructured color filters and help with nanotechnology being applied industrially to imaging devices, including displays and image sensors.

In this paper, we compared the electric field and absorptance of nano particles in nanostructures by amplifying the electric field around the nanoparticles through plasmon resonance and comparing the structure that can increase the absorptance with the nanostructure by using the Finite Different Time Domain (FDTD) simulation. In addition, the width of the nanostructure was adjusted to 240 nm ~ 300 nm, and the light absorptance rate was higher as the gap between the particles was short. In addition, a study was conducted on the formation of nanoparticles and nanostructures on the surface through UV imprint. In order to form particles in the structure, the nano particles were first arranged in the mold used for the fabrication of the structure using spray coating, and then fabricated through UV imprinting. The nanostructure and particles were formed together by scanning electron microscopy.
We numerically demonstrate the performance of a plasmonic lens composed of an array of nanoslits perforated on thin metallic film with slanted cuts on the output surface. Embedding Kerr nonlinear material in nanoslits is employed to modulate the output beam. A two dimensional nonlinear-dispersive finite-difference time-domain (2D N-D-FDTD) method is utilized. The performance parameters of the proposed lens such as focal length, full-width half-maximum, depth of focus and the efficiency of focusing are investigated. The structure is illuminated by a TM-polarized plane wave and a Gaussian beam. The effect of the beam waist of the Gaussian beam and the incident light intensity on the focusing effect is explored. An exact formula is proposed to derive electric field E from electric flux density D in a Kerr-Dispersive medium. Surface plasmon (SPs) modes and Fabry-Perot (F-P) resonances are used to explain the physical origin of the light focusing phenomenon. Focused ion beam milling can be implemented to fabricate the proposed lens. It can find valuable potential applications in integrated optics and for tuning purposes.
