  • In this paper, poly methyl methacrylate thin films were deposited on a ITO glass substrate using a plasma polymerization technique. In order to investigate the influence of the plasma coupling method and plasma conditions on the plasma polymerized poly methyl methacrylate (ppMMA) thin film properties, inductively coupled (ICP) and capacitively coupled plasma (CCP) were used to generate the plasma and the plasma parameters were varied. Molecular structures of the ppMMAs were investigated using a Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. Dielectric constants of the ppMMA thin films were investigated using a impedance analyzer (HP4192A, LF Impedance Analyzer). Current-Voltage (I-V) characteristics of the ppMMA thin films were investigated using a source measurement unit (SMU: Keithley 2400). Relationship between the plasma coupling technique/process parameter and ppMMA thin films properties were investigated.

  • In this paper, ITO gate electrode surface was modified using $O_2$ plasma and organic gate insulating layers were deposited on the ITO surface using plasma polymerization technique. In order to investigate the influence of the plasma coupling method and plasma conditions on the plasma polymerized methyl methacrylate (ppMMA) thin film properties, inductively coupled (ICP) and capacitively coupled plasma (CCP) were used to generate the plasma and the plasma parameters were varied. The ppMMAs were investigated using atomic force microscopy (AFM) and a Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. Dielectric constants of the ppMMA thin films were investigated using a impedance analyzer (HP4192A, LF Impedance Analyzer). Current-Voltage (I-V) characteristics of the organic thin film transistors (OTFTs) were investigated using a source measurement unit (SMU: Keithley 2612). Proposed method can be applied to dry-process to fabricate OTFTs during overall fabricating steps.

  • The permeation properties of plasma polymer membranes were studied for permanent gases such as He, $H_2$, $O_2$, $N_2$, $CH_4$ and condensable vapors such as $CO_2$, $C_2H_4$, $C_3H_8$. The plasma polymers were prepared by the discharge of microwave or radiofrequency(RF) wave. Hexamethyldisiloxane (HMDS) vapor was used as a monomer for plasma polymerization. In HMDS plasma-polymerized membranes prepared under microwave discharge, the permeability coefficient was dependent of the kinetic molecular diameter of the permeate gases. Additionally the membranes showed higher $O_2/N_2$ permselectivity compared to the plasma polymers from radiofrequency discharge. On the contrary, in the HMDS plasma-polymerized membranes prepared under radiofrequency discharge, the permeability coefficient was dependent of the critical temperature of the permeant gases. The membranes showed high selectivities of $C_2H_4$ and $C_3H_8$ over $N_2$. The permeability coefficient of plasma polymerized membranes prepared under microwave discharge was dependent of the molecular diameter of permeant gases because of high crosslinking density of the membrane. However, the crosslinking density of the plasma polymerized membranes prepared under RF discharge was lower because the energy density of RF wave is weaker than that of microwave. Hence, the permeability of RF plasma polymerized membranes became dependent of the critical temperature rather than molecular diameter of the gases.

  • In this work multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)/fibrin hybrid structures were synthesized via the transglutaminase- catalyzed polymerization of fibrinogen (FBG). Specifically, FBG was tethered onto oxidized MWCNTs by amide coupling, and the in situ polymerization of FBG to fibrin was performed by plasma transglutaminase (Factor XIIIa) in the presence of thrombin. The attached FBG was found to be biologically active and was polymerized to fibrin by thrombin and Factor XIIIa. MWCNT-FBG and MWCNT-Fibrin structures were characterized by FT-IR spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy.

  • A plasma surface modification of powders has been carried out in a circulating fluidized bed reactor under reduced pressure. Polystyrene (PS) particles treated by plasma are grafted with polyethylene glycol (PEG) on the surface. The virgin, plasma-treated and grafted powders were characterized by DPPH method, FTIR, SEM and contact angle meter. The plasma-treated PS powders have well formed peroxide on the surface, By PEG grafting polymerization, PEG is well grafted and dispersed on the surface of the plasma-treated PS powders. The PEG-g-PS particle was successfully synthesized using the plasma circulating fluidized bed reactor under reduced pressure.

  • Gas permeation properties of simple gases(He, $H_2,\;CO_2,\;O_2,\;N_2,\;CH_4$) through plasma-polymerized films were investigated, and the chemical structure of the plasma polymers was analyzed by infrared spectra. The plasma-polymerized films were prepared by plasma polymerization of fluorine-containing aromatic compounds, and permeation measurements were made at $35^{\circ}C$, latm. The permeability coefficient of the plasma films decreased as the size of penetrant molecules increased. The plasma polymers showed higher $CO_2/CH_4$ selectivities than those of commonly used polymers, while $O_2/N_2$ selectivities were similar of slightly lower than those of common polymers. FT-IR spectra shows that the plasma polymers contain both aromatic and aliphatic structures.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of exposure time on the polymerization of surface and 2 mm below the surface of light-cured restorative materials cured with three different light sources; conventional halogen light curing unit(XL 3000, 3M, U.S.A.), plasma arc light curing unit(Flipo, LOKKI, France) and light emitting diode(LED) light curing unit(Elipar Free light, 3M, U.S.A.) and compare the uniformity of polymerization from the center to the periphery of resin surfaces according to polymerization diameter cure with three different light sources. From the experiment, the following results were obtained. 1. In Z-100, Plasma arc light exposure time of 6 to 9 seconds and LED light exposure time of 40 to 60 seconds produced microhardness values similar to those produced with 40 second exposure to a conventional halogen light(p>0.05). 2. In Tetric Flow, Plasma arc light exposure time of 9 seconds and LED light exposure time of 40 to 60 seconds produced microhardness values similar to those produced with 40 second exposure to a conventional halogen light(p>0.05). 3. In Dyract AP, Plasma arc light exposure time of 6 to 9 seconds and LED light exposure time of 20 to 40 seconds produced microhardness values similar to those produced with 40second exposure to a conventional halogen light(p>0.05). 4. In Fuji II LC, Plasma arc light exposure time of 9 seconds and LED light exposure time of 20 to 60 seconds produced microhardness values similar to those produced with 40second exposure to a conventional halogen light(p>0.05). 5. Except Fuji II LC, microhardness was decreased from the center to the periphery in all light sources(p<0.05).

  • For the modification of PET surface, Perfluoropropene and Methyl alcohol were LT-plasma polymerized on the PET fabrics as thin films by means of 13.56 MHz radio frequency generator. The surface properties of PET fabrics were modified from hydrophobic to hydrophilic by application of the postplasma reaction of thin films. The evidence of the modification was identified by observation of the presence of hydroxy group in IR spectrum and the evaluation of degree of hydrophilicity was performed by measuring frictional static voltage of PET fabric with cotton fabric. For the case of modification by PFP, the result performed at the condition of 25 W, 70 m torr has shown to be effective, and for MeOH, result performed at the condition of 25 W, 100 m torr effective. The effect of hydrophilic surface modification of MeOH plasma polymer was superior to that of PFP-plasma polymer.
