  • In this investigation, off-gas generated from the activated sludge in wastewater treatment plant was monitored. Through monitoring, the oxygen transfer efficiency in the aeration system and the reliability was evaluated by comparing to clean water. First, the dissolved oxygen, oxygen transfer coefficient, and standard oxygen transfer efficiency were measured based on clean water, and the values were 8.60 mg/L, 9.490/hr and 23.96%, respectively. The off-gas monitoring at the wastewater treatment plant indicated that the standard oxygen transfer efficiency was 22.81%. Little difference in oxygen transfer efficiency this data inferred that the performance was improved through diffuser installation in the field monitoring system.

  • Post-translational modification of proteins regulates signaling cascades in eukaryotic system, including plants. Among these modifications, phosphorylation plays an important role in modulating the functional properties of proteins. Plants perceive environmental cues that directly affect the phosphorylation status of many target proteins. To determine the effect of environmentally induced phosphorylation in plants, in vivo methods must be developed. Various in vitro methods are available but, unlike in animals, there is no optimized methodology for detecting protein phosphorylation in planta. Therefore, in this study, a robust, and easy to handle Phos-Tag Mobility Shift Assay (PTMSA) is developed for the in vivo detection of protein phosphorylation in plants by empirical optimization of methods previously developed for animals. Initially, the detection of the phosphorylation status of target proteins using protocols directly adapted from animals failed. Therefore, we optimized the steps in the protocol, from protein migration to the transfer of proteins to PVDF membrane. Supplementing the electrophoresis running buffer with 5mM $NaHSO_3$ solved most of the problems in protein migration and transfer. The optimization of a fast and robust protocol that efficiently detects the phosphorylation status of plant proteins was successful. This protocol will be a valuable tool for plant scientists interested in the study of protein phosphorylation.

  • This paper presents a position control of ultra-precision machine tool post using piezoelectric material. A stack-type piezoelectric actuator is employed in a hinge-type tool holder. An assumed linear transfer function of the practical nonlinear plant is established through the comparison of transfer functions and step responses in the experiments and the simulations. Several types of feedforward/feedback controllers are designed via computer simulations using the assumed linear transfer function, The position tracking control experiments are undertaken to show the control efficiency of each controller.

  • In this paper, we present the flow and heat transfer characteristics with the array of impinging jet nozzles by using the numerical computation and experiment. Numerical solutions were obtained for dimensionless gap H=6, dimensionless outlet length L=10 and Reynolds number Re=1500 by using the commercial CFD code, CFX-5. Experimental and numerical results were agreed well with each other. It was found that the impinging jet with circular array nozzles generated the uniform heat transfer area and the maximum heat transfer is higher than rectangular array nozzles for certain parameter sets. It is one of the most important utilities providing steam to turbine in order to supply mechanical energy in thermal power plant. It is composed of thousands of tubes for high efficient heat transfer.

  • Currently TMR feed produced in commercial plant is one of the major source to feed cattle for both beef and dairy farm. However, because of lack of cutting and mixing system for utilizing domestic produced firmly baled round roughage in commercial TMR plant, these commercial TMR feed can not satisfy to farmers both in quality and price points of view. In order to solve these problems, a farm group size TMR plant model was developed in this study. The model plant was consist of round bale receiving and cutting system, pneumatic conveying system for transfer the roughage which was cut at the cutter to TMR mixer through pneumatic conveyor, TMR mixer enable to soften the stiff rice strew and to mix with other ingredients, finished feed bin which can be transfer to either packing system or individual farm, packing system by tycon bag which contains 400 kg unit and bulk unloading system to individual farmer. Also, a simulation model ARENA was applied to the model system in order to evaluate and check the production rate in each unit process and operation rate of total system and to find out if there are any clogged unit system obstructing the smooth flow of the total process flow. Processing cycle for produce one batch of the model plant was less than 30 minutes. Thus, it will take less than four hours for producing 16 tons per day equivalent to 1,000 beef cattle's daily feed.

  • Purpose: This study aims to analyze the fire resistance performance applied to plant facilities with high fire risk in Korea, secure suitable fire resistance performance, and ensure the fire safety of plant facilities. Method: Using the finite element analysis program Ansys, thermal transfer analysis and structural analysis were performed with fire load and fireproof coating as variables, and the fire resistance performance of plant facilities was analyzed based on the analysis results. Result: The fireproof coating applied to domestic plant facilities failed to secure fire resistance performance when the fire load of hydrocarbon fire presented in UL 1709 was applied, and it was confirmed that the deformation of steel after the fire was also significant. Conclusion: The current fire resistance performance applied to plant facilities in Korea cannot secure fire resistance performance in sudden fire growth and large fire loads like petrochemical plants, and it is necessary to secure fire safety by evaluating suitable fire resistance performance through performance evaluation of plant facilities.

  • Sewage treatment plants located near to large cities emit extremely higher concentration of odorous materials. This study evaluated flux profiles of ammonia emitted from the water surface of sewage treatment plants using a dynamic flux chamber. Also, an ammonia overall mass transfer coefficient and a mass transfer model was developed in order to estimate fluxes of ammonia using environment parameters and the flux from the sewage treatment plants. The developed mass transfer model was evaluated through a fitness analysis. Comparison modeled flux applying empirical overall mass transfer coefficients of ammonia and measured ammonia flux show a high linearity with 0.977. The flux ratio of 1.282 demonstrated highly statistical fitness, also. Modeled flux using the mass transfer model was compared with measured flux. In result, it indicated that empirical overall mass transfer coefficients were similar to measured flux. The mass transfer model using the empirical overall mass transfer coefficient developed in this study was proved to be an easy and effective method to make accurate and precise predictions for ammonia flux discharged from sewage treatment plants.

  • This study was conducted to determine the optimal concentrations of plant hormones (2,4-D, picloram, dicamba, NAA, kinetin) and the suitable explants among seeds, hypocotyl, and cotyledons on calls formation and plant regeneration of stevia(Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni). The frequency of cellus formation was higher in the young leaf-explants then the older ones, and in the seeds then the hypocotyls and cotyledons on MS medium with 1mg/L 2,4-D. After transfer of seed-derived stevia callus producing embryogenic callus on plant-regeneration medium, the frequency of plant regeneration from callus was 23.8% in MS medium with 1mg/L NAA and 3mg/L kinetin.
