It is important to analyze the seasonal change profiles of land cover type in large scale for establishing preservation strategy and environmental monitoring. Because the NOAA-AVHRR data sets provide global data with high temporal resolution, it is suitable for the land cover classification of the large area. The objectives of this study were to classify land cover of Korea, to investigate the phenological profiles of land cover. The NOAA-AVHRR data from Jan. 1998 to Dec. 1998 were received by Korea Ocean Research & Development Institute(KORDI) and were used for this study. The NDVI data were produced from this data. And monthly maximum value composite data were made for reducing cloud effect and temporal classification. And the data were classified using the method of supervised classification. To label the land cover classes, they were classified again using generalized vegetation map and Landsat-TM classified image. And the profiles of each class was analyzed according to each month. Results of this study can be summarized as follows. First, it was verified that the use of vegetation map and TM classified map was available to obtain the temporal class labeling with NOAA-AVHRR. Second, phenological characteristics of plant communities of Korea using NOAA-AVHRR was identified. Third, NDVI of North Korea is lower on Summer than that of South Korea. And finally, Forest cover is higher than another cover types. Broadleaf forest is highest on may. Outline of covertype profiles was investigated.
Intertidal algal community of Muchangpo in western coast of Korea was investigated qualitatively and quantitatively. Seasonal changes of algal occurrence, dominant species in cover, vertical zonation pattern and biomass were analysed. A total of sixty-four species of marine algae, one blue-green alga, three green algae, nineteen brown algae and forty-one red algae, were identified. The dominant species in cover were Sargassum thunbergii, Gelidium divaricatum and Pelvetia siliquosa throughout the year. Gloiopeltis furcata was abundant at upper and middle littoral zones and Corallina pilulifera at lower littoral zone. Classification by unweighted pair-group average method and ordination by reciprocal averaging based on the cover data indicated that, on the whole, the intertidal algal vegetation showed different patterns along tidal levels. Seasonal fluctuations of mean biomass were 57.2~92.8 g-dry/$m^2$, and the highest in summer and the lowest in spring season. Seasonal change of community structure was also discussed.

Background: Parthenium hysterophorus L. (Asteraceae; hereafter Parthenium) is an invasive alien species of global significance because of its' negative ecological and socioeconomic impacts. This species is spreading rapidly from lowland Tarai to Middle Mountain regions in Nepal. In the present study, we analyzed the impacts of Parthenium on plant community composition including their soil seedbank in subtropical grasslands located in central Nepal. Data was collected in a 10 m long transects passing through areas of high (> 90% cover), medium (40%-60%) and low (< 10%) levels of Parthenium cover using a plot of 1 m2. Altogether, we sampled 90 plots in 30 transects. Seedling emergence method was used to estimate soil seedbank density in the soil samples (0-10 cm depth) collected from the plots with high Parthenium cover. Results: There was no significant difference in the plant species richness at different levels of Parthenium invasion whereas there was a significant change in the species composition of above ground flora due to Parthenium invasion. There was also a significant difference in species composition between soil seedbank and aboveground flora in the highly invaded plots. Parthenium was the most dominant in soil seedbank, contributing 65% to the total soil seedbank. Conclusions: Our study suggests that Parthenium has considerable negative impact on the native grassland flora, and the dominance of Parthenium in the soil seedbank means there is a challenge for its management. It also suggests the need of monitoring the soil seedbank dynamics while managing Parthenium weed.

The purpose of this study was to provide information on management and apply it to a roadside ground cover plant understanding the capacity of calcium chloride in the plant. The experimental group was composed of the ratio control group of calcium chloride, 0.5%, 1.0%, and 3.0% in 500g of soil. Plant materials were selected and measured according to their ecological characteristics such as ground cover plant, Pachysandra terminalis, Hosta plantaginea, Trachelospermum asiaticum, Vitex rotundifolia, Euonymus japonica and Callicarpa japonica. The acidity of the amended soil was increased gradually depending on the treatment and conductivity was continually decreased. The EX-Ca increased after the treatment, but decreased in the middle of the experiment. Pachysandra terminalis, Trachelospermum asiaticum and Euonymus japonica were able to grow and survive at the ratio of 0.5%. Hosta plantaginea and Vitex rotundifolia were able to survive at the ratio of 1.0%. Hosta plantaginea, the possible state can absorb salts due to moisture and, can be applied to ground cover plants in the roadside. The growth and development of Callicarpa japonica was poor and the leaves were open to grow for calcium chloride treatment except the control group. It was concluded that Callicarpa japonica was very sensitive to calcium chloride.

In this paper we address reliable output feedback control problem for a class of linear systems with actuator/sensor failures. An output feedback control method is proposed which stabilizes the plant and guarantees $H_\inftyt$-norm constraint against all admissible actuator/sensor failures. The controller can be obtainer by solving some LMls that cover all failure cases. Effectiveness of this controller is validated via a numerical example. Plant-parasitic nematodes are not only an important constraint on agricultural crop production, but also cause both direct and indirect damage to turfgrass, which is a ground cover plant. However, studies on plant-parasitic nematodes of turfgrass in Korea are scarce. A survey for plant-parasitic nematodes was carried out on 13 golf courses in Korea. The results yielded 28 species/taxa belonging to 16 genera and 12 families of plant-parasitic nematodes. Among the isolated species, Helicotylenchus microlobus, Mesocriconema nebraskense, Tylenchorhynchus claytoni, Mesocriconema sp., and Meloidogyne graminicola were the most prevalent species in all management zones. Twelve species were new records of plant-parasitic nematodes in Korea. Highest maximum densities were showed by T. claytoni, Paratylenchus nanus, M. nebraskense, M. graminicola, and H. microlobus. Diversity (H'), was significantly higher in fairways compared to tees and greens, though species evenness (J') and dominance (D) showed no statistically significant differences. This information is crucial in nematode problem diagnosis, and the subsequent formulation of management strategies.
The effect of heat covering materials during cultivation of Shigyoku grape was examined on the effect of protection from freezing damage, labor reduction, and disease resistance during the wintering. This experimentwas accomplished using different combination of heat covering materials from the end of Nov as follows: straw and heat conservation cover B, kilding, color fabric A, and white needle punching fabric. Capacity of heat conservation was the least form white needle punching fabric, and the differences of other materials was slight. Early sprouting occurred by the treatment with heat conservation cover B, and the rate of sprouting was about 70.7% after 9 days of sprouting, showing 2.3-12.5% increase. Growth effect was not differ between heat conservation materials. Disease and insects occurred by the in dice 3.0-3.2 of crown gall from the heat conservation cover B treatment. Other damages were not observed or very little from other treatments. Demand of labor during steps of these treatments was more observed by 6% for kilding than heat conservation cover B, and those of color fabric A and white needle punching fabric were reduced by 6 and 15%, respectively.

The glycoprotein known as glomalin-related soil protein (GRSP) is abundantly produced on the hyphae and spores of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) in soil and roots. GRSP play a decisive role in the soil aggregation, but GRSP was also sensitive to agricultural managements. Thus, our objectives were to assess the effect of different cover crop incorporation on the GRSP content in soil and growth of subsequent soybean and maize. Pot experiments with the incorporation of four cover crops were set up. The same amount (666g) of aboveground plant parts of wheat (AMF host), hairy vetch (AMF host), mustard (non-host) and rapeseed (non-host) was separately incorporated into soils. The aboveground plant parts and roots of soybean and maize were grown in each incorporated pots and sampled at 6 and 9 weeks after sowing. Our results showed that the different cover crops incorporation affected soil biological and chemical properties such as EC, $NO_3-N$ content, ${\beta}-glucosidase$ activity, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity and GRSP content. The soil EC and $NO_3-N$ content in the hairy vetch, mustard and rapeseed was higher compared to the wheat. The ${\beta}-glucosidase$ activity in the wheat and hairy vetch was significantly higher than that in the mustard and rapeseed, and the ALP activity in the wheat was significantly higher than that in the hairy vetch, mustard, and rapeseed. The GRSP content in the mustard and rapeseed was significantly lower than that of the hairy vetch and wheat. Moreover, The top dry weight and leaf area of soybean and maize in the hairy vetch at 6 weeks were significantly higher compared to the other treatments. Our results indicated that the incorporation of mustard and rapeseed may cause indirectly the decrease of GRSP content and soil enzyme activity in soil. One possible explanation for the decrease of GRSP in non-AMF host crop treatments may be the decrease of AMF density in the soil. AMF are not able to form a symbiotic relationship with Brassicaceae roots due to the release of anti-fungal compounds. This means the AMF may not be able to produce GRSP in the soil. However, the differences in the benefit of cover crop incorporation were shown only by a pot experiment. Comparative investigations of crop residue managements would be applied to both pot experiment and field study to clarify a better selection of cover crops in rotation to encourage GRSP production.

To evaluate the effect of companion plant (Phlox subulata and Glechoma hederacea var. longituba) on conservation of soil in slopped highland, coverage of crops and soil erosion were investigated with 3 different conditions. The coverage rate of Phlox subulata with Chinese cabbage cultivation was kept on approximately 100% from Chinese cabbage-transplanting to -harvest. The coverage rate of Glechoma hederacea var. longituba with Chinese cabbage cultivation was low at it's early stage, however, reached to approximately 100% at the time of Chinese cabbage harvest. In contrast, the coverage rate of Chinese cabbage cultivation without cover crop, and simultaneous transplanting with Chinese cabbage and cover crop were approximately 60%. Losses of soil and nitrate nitrogen were much lower in Phlox subulata with Chinese cabbage cultivation ($0.1{\sim}0.2ton\;ha^{-1}$, $0.2{\sim}0.4kg\;NO_3{^-}-N\;ha^{-1}$) than those in Chinese cabbage cultivation without cover crop ($20.8ton\;ha^{-1}$, $2.1kg\;NO_3{^-}-N\;ha^{-1}$), and simultaneous transplanting with Chinese cabbage and cover crop ($8.9{\sim}10.5ton\;ha^{-1}$, $1.5{\sim}2.2kg\;NO_3{^-}-N\;ha^{-1}$). Cover plants suppressed the weed occurrence up to about 70%. Live mulching with cover plants set a good effects on weed suppression and reduction of soil and nutrient loss. Therefore intercropping with Phlox subulata will make great contributions to soil conservation in Chinese cabbage cultivated highland.
In order to establish labor-saving culture technology in Tartary buckwheat, three cultural practices: hand planting, drill sowing machine and soil cover direct seeding machine, were compared. The highest grain yield was found in soil cover direct seeding plot with a value of 3.4 g per plant. As a result, grain yield may be estimated to be 113kg in soil cover direct seeding and 80kg in hand scattering. In addition, for the weed control, three herbicide treatments: single use of Alachlor, mixture and combination of Alachlor and Paraquat dichloride were conducted. the mixture showed over 90% weed control value, and the highest grain yield was found in the combination treatment. Combine machine was effective to reduce the ratio of grain loss and working hour by enhancing the working efficiency to 15${\sim}$20min/10a.
